So animal activists have joined in on the War Against Christmas?

They'll get over it.

Cute pics.

Yeahhhhhh, I'd stick to protesting that "imprisoned with no ability to behave naturally" thing, because nobody gives a crap that they're wearing santa hats for Xmas.

2007-12-18 10:49:01 PM
It's controversial 'cause the whale is like Shinto or something, right?

And yet, oddly enough, many animal activists seem to have a strongly anthropomorphical view of animals. Curious.

Why is it OK to keep Beluga whales but not Killer whales?

2007-12-18 10:56:47 PM
But what do they taste like?

2007-12-18 10:57:07 PM
At least they're complaining on the grounds of it being animal cruelty. If it was because they were atheists, I'd really scream.

2007-12-18 10:57:09 PM
Why are the activists even blinking an eye at this? Yes, the Santa hats are silly. Yes, the confinement of animals and their use for novelty purposes is questionable; while keeping wild animals in the wild is the best option, captivity can be a close second if the animals are treated well. But shouldn't they be concentrating on the guys who are killing whales?! That is most definitely wrong.

2007-12-18 10:57:53 PM
This is Japan we're talking about. The activists should be happy they aren't serving the whales up as the main course in a Christmas banquet.

This reminds me of a story. Got a quick minit and I'll recall it all and regal you with my storytelling abilities. Here goes.

Now I don't know if this is true or not, but it's got some credibility in business circles. A big manufacturer was paid a visit by the EWEOC Equal Whale Employment Opportunity Commission. The Equal Whale Employment Commission employee who came to visit was a Beluga lover, this was plainly apparent. During the visit he asked the Manufacturing Supervisor to show him his employment records. He reminded the Supervisor by law the company should employ a minimum of 14% Beluga Whales. The Supervisor grabs his phone and calls Human Resources. He asks how many Belugas they have on the payroll. He listens, smiles, and turns to the Commission Employee so that he could hear what the Supervisor was about to say. "Ok so you are saying we have 17% Belugas? And how many more is that than 14%? 7? Well if 14% is the law, then fire those 7 Beluga bastards!"

Because of the slippery slope of course!

Thank you, I'm now having dirty flashbacks to that movie.

/The interview she did on Letterman for the movie was brilliant.

You see that Beluga up there? I bet if Greenpeace was to ask him or any of his SeaWorld buddies, they would find out the whales are happy to be employed and would appreciate a little less help, thank you.

Japanese panties?

Where?

I'm Dyslexic and I have ADD....

Makes for shorter and better headlines, at least in my head.

2007-12-18 11:36:47 PM
I, for one, have little objection to them putting Santa hats on the belugas, if only because the anthropomorphising (sp?) of whales will make the Japanese people support whaling less. (i.e., if Japanese people see whales as "cute" and "cuddly", they will be less likely to support the Japanese government's stance on whaling)

/am anti-whaling when it comes to humpbacks - their population is only just starting to recover

2007-12-18 11:41:44 PM
I think these people should really be happy that these whales are not shot with rocket propelled grenades and call it a day.

2007-12-18 11:47:18 PM
Wow. I need to make sure the pictures of my dogs wearing santa hats don't surface, or I might be killed by these eco-terrorists.

2007-12-18 11:50:35 PM
Japan? Forget Santa hats. Hell, give the whales armour and projectile weapons. Then they can take out anyone who has whale sushi on their breath.

I wonder if their pool is any bigger than the one they had at the Vancouver aquarium. They were just so talented at killing off their orcas there. Huge killer whales, capable of soaring through the ocean and ripping apart sea lions...trapped in an itty bitty tiny pool going in endless circles in mucky water. "But orca logos make items sell better! They're so iconographic." You want something to keep in a tiny cage? Get a goddamn gerbil, they're so peabrained they don't care.

FTA:

However, the Australian government will be casting a different eye over the activities of the Japanese whalers in Antarctica - it plans to send a former P&O cruise ship, now converted into an armed vessel, to the region to monitor the hunting.

2007-12-19 12:05:04 AM
What's the big deal? It's not like the hats are stapled to the whales heads. I assume.
Or are the whales actually secret Jews? Are they offened by the Christ in Christmas hats?

2007-12-19 12:05:09 AM
At least the Japanese are not making the whale have a bowel movement on another whale's face and thinking it's sexy.

2007-12-19 12:08:24 AM
I heard Australia is sending a boat armed with .50 cal machine guns to investigate this.
