Columnist says refutes idea that Western society is more sexually oppressive than Muslim societies ...

Fixed that for ya, subby.

Eeeesh.

That headline is completely blown. Apparently subby made tragic mistake of DNRTFA.

And thank God. I'm so tired of arguing with the thousands of people who mistakenly think Western society is sexually oppressed and Muslim women are liberated. It's a huge problem.

Meh. Look at the headline:

"Is Western Culture More Sexually Oppressive Than The Burka?"

Does it bother anyone else that Huffington Post can even ASK this question with a straight face? Is this something being hotly debated anywhere?

SquirrelsOfDoom: Does it bother anyone else that Huffington Post can even ASK this question with a straight face?

She's not asking it with a straight face. It's in direct reference to the idiots who are suggesting western culture is more opressive.

SquirrelsOfDoom: Hmm. I meet a lot of idiots from day-to-day and I can't say I've ever heard anyone suggest that.

Well, she does give three or four examples in the article of people who are at least conflating western-style oppression with Islamic-style opression. They're not saying it's necessarily more oppressive, so you do have a point.

None of this changes the fact that submitter is a cocknut.

Or the fact that if a headline saying "Water is wet and the sky is blue" got greenlighted, the ensuing forum thread would instantly fill up with "Fail!" and "DNRTFA" and "Submitter is a dumbass" and "I guess they don't have an intelligence test for headline writers."

It is axiomatic. A law of nature. I have yet to see it not happen with a single greenlight I've ever received myself.

I don't really know how you'd quantify it, but Western women do go through a lot of self-inflicted torture to attain a beauty that not many of them can truly achieve but on the other hand, our porn is better because our women are looser. It also has better production values.

True, but then the columnist lends some legitimacy to the idea by responding to it in a substantive way. This is one of those rare occasions when a Fark-style flaming would actually be the right response. Something along the lines of "Get a brain, Moarns!"

It's a rhetorical question you jackass, so that you have an idea what the article is about. Dear god if you take life so seriously you'll only end up dead.

Slight birdwalk (in the approximate neighborhood of topic), but did anyone see that movie OSAMA?

Oh my farking gawd. The most Depressing. Film. Ever. Made in Afghanistan, about a young girl who is punished for dressing like a boy (so she can work to feed her starving family) by being forced to marry an old man.

I'm gonna go have a little drinky now...

Since I've never beaten my wife to death (or at all, come to think of it) because she doesn't have the latest coach bag or a pair a Uggs...

Aww fark it. The problem is not with the "average" Westerner and the "average" Muslim. The real comparison is who's extremists are nuttier. The dude who beat his daughter to death for not wearing a Hijab is an evil motherfarker. End of story. To blame it on culture or religion is a bit of a cop out. He was capable of killing his offspring. That's a big point. Sure, his interpretation of his religion allowed him to rationalize it afterwards but it doesn't change the fact that he had it within him to kill his daughter over religious trappings.

All we can really do is enforce the laws we have in existence here. Murder is murder. Child and spousal abuse is what it is as well. Prosecute it aggressively and fairly and let the chips fall where they may.

As I do not find Middle Eastern women attractive I can't complain if they are covered up. The best looking women in the world are French, followed closely by Brits.

reveal101: It's a rhetorical question

Gotta agree with the guy who said earlier that responding substantively legitimizes a really, really stupid question.

As Drew pointed out in his book, publish an article titled "Did the US fake the Moon landings?" or "Did Bigfoot raise Elvis and JFK's love children?" and you instantly give the impression that there's serious discussion ongoing about whether these things DID happen. Doesn't matter if the article goes on to say no.

There is a fairly sizable Islamic community where I live, and it always seems like the women who wear the full outfits (as opposed to leaving the face uncovered) are with really gnarly dudes. I figure they are just ashamed of their fugly husbands.

2007-12-14 1:16:09 PM
Because our western laws REQUIRE women to wear bustiers, mini-skirts and high heels.

I mean, you never see women wearing muu-muus or sweats in America.

Having visited Egypt, Syria, Israel, and Lebanon, I can categorically say you have a serious problem if you think French women beat all of them.

Even a Frenchman would think you were a madman.

And BRITS?!?! Ayoye.

Any of them? Really? Do you think this might have to do more with your perception of them than is reflected in reality? For example, might you have seen a really hot Italian woman and never known she was actually Persian? I myself once knew a Lebanese woman that was an absolute knockout.

Also, don't make farkers start posting pics of hot Israeli women in uniform.

You can just see how all that western sexual liberation has made Spears into a confident, stable, sexually-charged young woman.

SquirrelsOfDoom: Does it bother anyone else that Huffington Post can even ASK this question with a straight face? Is this something being hotly debated anywhere?

Apparently, yes. From TFA:

"Many feminist readers expressed solidarity with their burka-clad sisters: While not necessarily "agreeing" with laws that "force" women to swaddle themselves in black wool, they sympathized with a woman's desire to do so "by choice," given the oppression Western women are subject to walking around unswaddled"

Far be it from me to disagree with Drew but the latter has an aura of implausibility from which it could not escape. In order for Drew's point to work it the article would have to have a believable premise. Not to mention the whole concept is just the same old "Americans will believe anything" B.S. that denigrates the intelligence of average American to that of a middle schooler who still believes in the tooth fairy.

Or hair, skin or breath man, apparently.

I mean, Irish women beat British anyday. But to trump every single dark-skinned Middle Eastern beauty (and there IS a certain type of gorgeousness that you only see in Lebanon, Israel, Egypt, etc) with a pasty-faced Cockney hag Yikes.

Reading comprehension, let me show you it.

Some people need to pull their neoconservative heads out of their dumb asses before they submit articles with deceptive headlines in an attempt to stick it to the feminazis....

The Burqa is actually more of an inconvenience to women, but an insult to men. The assumption is that men, seeing the beauty of a woman, cannot control their sexual urges and become debased and animal. This is why women are punished in some countries for being raped - women should understand that men lack sexual control, and should be careful not to be impious by tempting them.

FTFA:

"Freeing women from what the author calls 'oppressive' attire in the west, and particularly the U.S., has imposed a whole new set of expectations upon women to conform to the standards of attractiveness designated by the culture. the word 'attractive' is important -- after all, who are women 'attracting' with their appearance if not men? have no illusions: our 'choices' are still largely dictated by the will of men.

"in the extreme, these standards lead to eating disorders, plastic surgery, a massive cosmetics industry, and a whole array of magazines to push the new 'must have' fashions of the season, etc..."

"it may make some people feel better to tell themselves they are more cultured, more free, and more respected because they can choose to wear a skimpy top to show off their new breast implants and the abs it took six months of torture in the gym to develop, but this is one woman who doesn't buy it. the way i see it, women get a pretty raw deal everywhere..."

Yeah because personally choosing to do all these things really causes you to be oppressed. And don't give me that bullshiat about just wanting to conform to society. If you can't be your own person without being "pressured" into wearing clothes by your peers you probably deserver to get hit by a bus.

Also FTFA:
And the girl wasn't even being told to wear a burka! So why did Mr. Parvez believe murder was the appropriate punishment for teenage rebellion? Because according to the version of Islam to which Mr. Parvez subscribes, his daughter -- like his wife -- is his personal property. As such, he has the right to punish her how he pleases (or, as he might put it, how "Allah" thinks she should be punished). When such a daughter finally decides to "stand up and take responsibility for herself," she doesn't get grounded, she gets killed.

Fail.

The Burqa? That's worn by a very small percentage of Muslim women. I think a more apt comparison would be the hijab. And surprise, a lot of Muslim women do not even wear that either.

czarangelus: The Burqa is actually more of an inconvenience to women, but an insult to men.

shiat, if I had to wear one in any kind of hot, humid climate it'd be a little bit more than an inconvenience. Though, today, it might make things more comfortable outside. In any event, it'd be best not to force someone to wear something as imposing (to the wearer) as a burqa if they don't want to. Unfortunately it's a huge grey area as the issue is so intertwined with their culture and religion and family that not wearing a burqa when required must seem like a better deal than being killed or ostracized.
