FTFA: Mayfield was responding to questions about a section in a new report titled "Political Interference With Climate Change Science Under the Bush Administration" - the end result of a 16-month investigation by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, chaired by Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif.

so... one guy out of hundreds interviewed, and who was never personally accused by Waxman of being manipulated by the White House, claims the Bush Administration didn't in fact influence him...

where's the story?
Waxman never said this guy changed his testimony. But you can't deny the White House attempted to have scientific conclusions and testimonies by many people withheld or modified to fir White House policy.

FTA: The Waxman report details an e-mail from Tom Jones, a staffer for Alaska's Republican Sen. Ted Stevens, that he wrote to Noel Turner, an employee in the Office of Legislative Affairs at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in the days leading up to the hearings. Jones apparently wanted Mayfield to say that global warming was not making hurricanes stronger.

Where do you see in that article that anyone accused Mayfield of being pressured by the White House?

Don't know about the hurricane, but some tardmitter has a sandstorm in their right-wing va-jay-jay.

Okay.

If you wish to believe that Global Warming doesn't exist...
If you wish to ignore an overwhelming amount of scientific data...
If you wish to refute the testimonies of a majority of experts...
If you wish to prevent any social change for the benefit of maintaining or improving environmental wellness...

That's fine. No problem. You go.

I find it interesting how these headlines that have a right-wing snipe attack at the left often have Afternoon_Delight posting first.

Anyone remember that this was the guy forced out of the NHC by the staff of the office because he was overtly politicizing his position? Yeah, probably didn't need to be coerced...

Who is cutting this guy paychecks currently?

Geez. I agree that Deborah Harry was an overrated Warhol hangar-on but that seems a little harsh.

Anybody hear John McCain on the subject this afternoon?

If we take actions against climate change, and it turns out it does exists, we'll have done the right thing. If it turns out it does not exist, we will have made ourselves more energy independent, and created a cleaner world for our children.

But if we do nothing, we're farked either way. Sort of like Pascal's Wager.

I thought McCain knocked it out of the park. Global warming as a divisive political issue is simply asinine.

You have to love it:

Once upon a time, if the President 'edited' scientific announcements, it was news.

Today? It's news when we find out our President didn't manipulate scientific announcements.

That's FARKED up.

the old crow: I thought McCain knocked it out of the park. Global warming as a divisive political issue is simply asinine.

If we do something about climate change, sure, humanity as a species will benefit overall but there will be financial winners and losers. Those who know they'd be on the losing side of things aren't going to give up their toys without a fight even if that means harming billions of their fellow humans. And we all known, when there is financial incentive to manipulate politics, it will be done.

For that matter, even if he did bow to political coercion, it's not like he's going to admit it, unless he WANTS to confess to a felony.

But whether or not Mayfield's report was altered for political reasons, the Stevens' office's request was way out of line.

Oh and you have to love when the Republicans try to spin a story that's effectively "We tried to use political pressure to influence scientific reports but were not successful" into a win for their side.

No, Ted Stevens is not the White House. But everyone knows all Republicans take their orders directly from Karl Rove.

Right, because its not like anyone in the White House would lie. Totally believable.
