Great idea.

Back in the early 1900s they raised funds for WWI by soliciting donations. For every $100 they raised, they would ram a tank into a local hotel. They raised so much money that they destroyed the hotel.

Imagine what the Faculty offices would earn.

What kind of library costs 46k to build? Good job thinking that cunning plan through.

It would be nice if they didn't make enough money to renovate the new library, then ended up with no library.

Very cool. I dreamed of getting to do something like this in high school.

That's a pretty great idea, subby.

It's not quite what the article says, though, it is?

I trust you all remembered to bring in your implements of destruction. Now let's trash this dump.

Does that figure include the cost-savings from not having to pay as much to have the old one demolished?

So I wonder how much drew would make by selling filter bypasses.

Like, for $5/post, you could turn the filter off.

They did something similar at my middle school years ago, although it was per-minute not per-swing. Tons of students got to beat the crap out of a car, the music dept. got new instruments.

if by barbarism you mean human nature, than yes good sir, you are correct.

Good point on the demolition savings. That can be a significant cost in any undertaking such as this.

Gotta wonder how old the building they were smashing was...anything pre-1978 you'd have to wonder about lead paint and the possibility of asbestos in the concrete. Still, I'd be all for smashing shiat with a sledgehammer or whatever else I can use.

/slashies for smashies!

They tried the more sophisticated route of asking politely for more money, but it just didn't bring in the funds they hoped. I heard one of them even added a 'pretty please'.

Besides, it saves them even more money in the long run once the old library needs to be demolished. If you act quickly, you can go politely ask for the structure to collapse without any brutish destruction.

I'm pretty sure the 46k is just to help offset whatever the cost is by not needing to as much in the way of extra funds.

I dunno, I could probably spend 46K stocking a library with books.

That aint much money. Have another fundraiser where the donations buy matches to burn the books.

2007-12-08 10:51:55 PM
Did the subby even RTFA? Nowhere there does it say that there was any 'pay per swing' fundraiser...

They raised $46k for the library renovation, and the students helped tear it down, but there's no direct link between the two =P

2007-12-08 10:54:33 PM
I know a story just ran about how toxic old libraries are... but using students who are only exposed for a minute each sounds a bit like chernobyl

Wait a few days hours.

Although the pay per swing idea is brilliant.

Could high school kids swinging sledge hammers really be considered a feasible demolition option? Think of the lawsuits.

Did somebody say "sledgehammer"?

I suggested the same concept as a fund-raiser when my town built a new high school. In a small mill town, I figured there would likely be generations of people willing to spend a Hamilton to swing a hammer on the old building...
They told me there were "liability issues", so it never happened.

//just wanted to rough up that crappy locker that made me late so many times
///schools need this sort of creative financial solution

Good job, Chamander. I'm glad I'm not the only one who read the whole article. I kept waiting for the "raising money by the sledgehammer swing" part. Subby's going to have nightmares for being a bad liar.

A fundraising group at my University did this with a car. Pay per swing to demolish a car. All proceeds went to the homeless.

Bah. This is old hat. We used to do this twice a year in college to make money for the computer society charity fundraiser.
