No thanks.

(I never knew how stuff worked until I read How Stuff Works.)

Just what we need.... A Game to bug us just like our bosses ;)
2001-07-31 09:25:39 AM
This is a generic rip off of the AI Game. But this one will suck.
2001-07-31 09:41:24 AM
Why will it suck?
2001-07-31 09:46:42 AM
I actually a link to this game site in like 3-4 months ago. I'm pretty sure the game was in the works before the AI thing.
2001-07-31 09:48:44 AM
This game is going to be awesome. A nice break from the "RUN RUN SHOOT KILL RUN DIE RUN RUN KILL" games. ( Don't get me wrong, I love those games.)
2001-07-31 09:50:06 AM
One more thing: It's a game that doesn't require a $2000 system with a $400 video card.

Mme: I can just see it...

BRING! "Johnson and Johnson, this is Mary. How may I help you?"
(You better stay out of this! You'll be sorry! *Click*)

I played the demo for this last was a lot of fun...very x-filesish...The calls were all pre recorded, and kind of funny...

Soylent, you are about right on what the calls said..."You are getting to close back the fark off."

It can be played by anyone at this point if you go to the site...the demo is free...

"All players and characters will have a presence on AIM"

Sounds like a cheap way to force people to use AOLs crappy messaging service.
2001-07-31 11:02:30 AM
Who in the hell has time for a game like this?
2001-07-31 11:26:02 AM
The AI thing was first, trust me. I remember when this story came out and the AI game had already started. All the AI Game people panned it.

It will suck because its going to be too commercialized. The AI game was a success because they weren't trying to make money directly from the game. It's going to have a fake, polished feel to it that won't make it seem real.
2001-07-31 11:26:10 AM
Come on Jester, people have time to spend their entire day on Fark, you think this game will make them less lazy?
2001-07-31 11:38:59 AM
This isn't a game where you sit down and play for five hours straight. I think it's more like this: You're on a date on the weekend, and you're cellphone rings. You answer it to a gruff and threatening voice, warning you about something. And you might not hear anything the rest of the day.

But what I'd like to know is, how is it decided what phone calls you recieve? Or faxes? Do the programmers sit there and say... "OK, call these 500 people with this message."
Or is it fully automated and random?
2001-07-31 11:40:01 AM
I can just imagine my boss walking by the fax machine and seeing one of those documents.
2001-07-31 11:59:36 AM
This seems pretty farking creepy to me.
2001-07-31 12:05:55 PM
The AI game WAS creepy. The eerie messages, the creepy sites...the one that sent messages from YOUR outlook was the best.
2001-07-31 12:19:34 PM
I'm trying it out, what the hell? I think it sounds pretty cool! Sort of like that movie, The Game. Soylent's right, it's not like you sit down and play it for 10 hours at a time. You'll get an email, an AIM message every once in a while, and then put the pieces together whenever time allows. Sounds like fun! Hell, I've spent $10 on a lot worse entertainment in my lifetime.
2001-07-31 12:26:05 PM
I don't think this game will last long. The novelty will wear off in a while.
2001-07-31 12:27:47 PM
"The Game" was a far better movie than I ever expected.
2001-07-31 12:45:21 PM
Thats the thing SoylentGreen,
After playing the demo, I was more than Satiated. I couldn't see actually paying for the ongoing game...the real fun of it was just me being juvenille...

The AIM messages mostly come from bots, so they will say things like.

B0T1: Did you get the secret message I sent you this morning?

ME: Do you like my big rotund ass?

BOT1: Good, I was worried that it had been intercepted...

ME: No, my ass is safe..

BOT1: Just be careful.
2001-07-31 01:02:54 PM
Me and everyone else I know who've tried to DL the game has gotten errors.... annoying as fark...

Hi, I don't know if you all would believe me, but I'm a beta tester for Majestic. So basically I'm already deep into the game. I can answer some of your questions.

Majestic was announced about November of 2000. I don't know when the AI game came about but the creator of Majestic claims to have been working on this since about 1995.

Majestic was voted most original game at E3. (giant video game expo)

There are several big names that are behind this game, including an original founder of pixar and a producer of MI2. There is also someone big from the video game industry whos name is eluding me right now.

You can schedule calls when you like, to a number you want to get calls. You can have calls identify themselves as a part of the game or not. Faxes can be sent to your real live fax machine, or can be gotten from the Majestic page or Majestic Application. Same with phone calls. You can "pause" the game if you need not be disturbed for a period of time.

In the course of a game you might have to make a few calls too :)

Majestic seems to be paced in about 1 hour incretments. Something might happen and a character might say I'll email you tommorrow or I'll call you tommorrow. Then you wouldn't be able to progress till that call or email tommorrow. The beauty of the game is in these periods you can look into the background real world elements that the fictional game exposes you to.

Yeah, its also fun to mess with the AIM bots. :) If you play it legitimatly, the bots answer realistically. I was really suprised on how realistic it is. Sure if you say I got big donkey balls or something it would be confused, but if you asked about a topic it knew something about, it can phrase the answer correctly.

The biggest problem right now with the game is its a bit easy. Most of us beta testers are seasoned video game players and we all rush though it. The puzzles are facinating though. I see the creators upping the diffuiculty soon.

I feel Majestic has only opened the door to this type of experince.

2001-07-31 01:54:38 PM
'Hi, I don't know if you all would believe me, but I'm a beta tester for Majestic.'

I smell corporate mole.
2001-07-31 02:07:14 PM isn't an educational site, it's just an advertising site that blurs the lines between content and advertising.
2001-07-31 02:11:12 PM
Nah, all the stuff he says is on target. The game is revolutionary, but it's not really targeted at hard-core gamers. I personally prefer to either play or not play a game and not let it intrude into life outside the game. I can see how other non-gamers might like it, though.
2001-07-31 02:26:56 PM
The game does sound interesting-- though I still think Gregory's post was a little gushy and suspicious-- though on the other hand maybe he's just never, or infrequently posted on these boards before and wanted to be nice.
Anyhow, i think i would enjoy it but don't want to DL it-- my bf is a game junkie (right now wwiiol) and i'm not sure I want him seeing this one. I'm selfish, but a girl needs a little quality time :p
2001-07-31 02:46:36 PM
Me personally, I owuld dig the vreepiness factor. Everyoen here at work is already frightened of me, and getting all sorts of wierd calls and faxes would only add to the mystique I've got going here.

Hehe. . . I'm the guy your mother warned you about
2001-07-31 03:08:27 PM
Maybe "GregoryD" is a game character? Wow...that would be sweet. I'd sign-up immediatly if that was the case.
2001-07-31 03:27:21 PM
SG- now that would be too cool and i would defintily have to dl the game then :)
2001-07-31 03:42:53 PM
But right here is an even more important question to ask.

-he who stacks pork
2001-07-31 04:15:48 PM
Leo Something to do with how testosterone builds up over night, or something like that.
I do know that its a good thing, i'm a big fan.
2001-07-31 04:16:45 PM
I read about Majestic in a computer game magazine. There was a paragraph that basically said it called you on the phone and stuff. I found it interesting and I went to the site. After a few visits they had a link asking for beta testers. First 100 people got to play for free and ahead of everyone else. I signed up and got picked.

Okay no gush, bad part of Majestic: If your a hardcore gamer that spends 84 hours a week playing games you are going to hate it. Long periods of waiting for clues. But if you want to play a game that you can play for about an hour a day you would enjoy it. So Fuzzy you might enjoy it more then the hardcore gamer bf of yours. When I play, I usually read metafiler and fark during the parts I'm waiting for something to happen.

I WISH I was a corporate mole, then maybe I could get the FARK out of working at grocery/merchandice store 40 hours a week. READ THE FRIKKIN SIGN! IT SAYS EXCLUDES FAT FREE! URDGE TO KILL RISING! RISING! RISING!!! fading, fading, going, gone... ahh I feel better now.

I don't want to be a character.

Me: must find this clue to free him!
Player: Bite me you donkey ass licker!
Me: Okay see you then!
Player: Screw you hippie!
Me: l8er

I'm pretty much new to fark. I read in yahoo magazine about bloggers. I first went to and someone posted a link via fark. Now I read both metafiler and fark :) I am rather opinionated on some subjects, if someone talks about a subject I'm interested in they will light a fire under my ass and you'll see a comment there.

"Sounds like a cheap way to force people to use AOLs crappy messaging service."

Do use AIM. go get Trillian instead. It is much better and AIM or ICQ.
2001-07-31 04:22:00 PM
Ughh.... I mean Dont use AIM.

God I am an idiot.
2001-07-31 04:43:23 PM
Sorry for giving you a hard time Gregory...I'm just really suspicious of these gorilla/viral marketing types these days. Particulalry on the gaming front.

Anyhow- thanks for the info, I will have to check it out.

Oh, and I feel for ya man, I worked as a cashier for a long time. i always wished I had a trap door in front of my register to deal with my more difficult regular customers.
2001-07-31 04:48:51 PM
EA already has a free demo available, if anyone's interested.
2001-07-31 04:49:29 PM
Yeah, Trillian kicks ass...and takes up a whole lot less processor time on my machine, too.
2001-07-31 05:04:35 PM
addison's video game formula

no guns=no fun

good game=lots of farking guns
2001-07-31 05:26:27 PM
i cant play majestic...i got into this new game.....

...its called FARK Moderator. I sit around on this place for an hour or so a day, and i have to pour over page after page of infomation trying to "delete" the culprits. I think this is more exciting than Majestic, probably could take more time, and includes a free set of boobies!
2001-07-31 05:59:45 PM
I just finished Max Payne.

Now THAT game is awesome.
2001-07-31 06:25:38 PM
There's this revolutionary new game.. you don't even play it on a computer.. I think it's called footballer or something like that.. anyway you do it with real people, out in the outdoors, I'm not making this up!
2001-07-31 07:02:42 PM
"The Game" movie sucked so badly. Well, actually, it suckers you in, you suspend some disbelief, and then it has an ending worthy of the WB network.

Here comes the fark censor--it farking sucked so bad that it was the one and only movie where I ever considered asking not only for my money back, but for an anal rape crisis center.
2001-07-31 09:20:53 PM
Majestic.... whooopie....
The thing sucks....
It will be shut down afdter the second episode becasue the game calls your house in the middle of the night and threatens you, and a love one(that the AI received in an instant message)
Can you see at 2 am your mom picking up the phone, and to be threatened by an AI, cause thats the name it received?

The game was suposed to be completely realeased in FEBUARY. i remember watching the countdown on the website to the release, when it started at 3 days before, I was there when the timer ran out, and there like, its been delayed.....

BULLshiat..... it aint worth it people.... its like 20$ a month so you can prove to peopple your phschotic by ranting about your mission to stop majestic.
2001-08-01 01:50:44 AM

1) It's only $10 a month
2) It's February not Febuary
3) Give it your cell phone number and stop living with your mommy
4) It's fun, play the demo
2001-08-01 07:41:05 PM
Hmm.. My first inclination is to say that this would eat into my Baldur's Gate II time too much. But it sounds intriguing.

How much time are we talking here, Gregory? How many game play hours does the thing have, not including the waiting for calls/faxes, etc? How much time is computer time and how much is the calls/faxes/etc part?

If there are nine episodes, given to the player each month, and it costs 10.00 a month (first ep free), have I just sunk 80.00 into a game with no replay value? (At least with Ultima Online and other fee-based games, the game doesn't officially "end".)

What if my phone line is busy or my cell is off, does the game attempt to call me back?

Say I sign up on 8/1 and get the first ep, and Tbdean signs up on 9/1. He gets the first ep, right? It's not like the game starts and ends on certain days, right?

Did any of those questions make sense? I'm pretty tired.
