Pft, people said "Brown People" all the time in my school. It was like saying black people or white people and I consider those to be more racist. "Brown people" is not really racist since it's basically everyone who's not white, Asian or black. There is no specific race that really qualifies as "Brown". There are people who even qualify Mexican/Latinos as brown.

I bet the principal is just upset because the UPS driver made a special delivery to his wife.

I like how the kid never actually said it but he's still taking the fall for it.

I understand that there is racism in the world and that it's an ugly thing, but sometimes people hate you because you're a jerk regardless of your skin color.

Congratulations, Ms. Principal. You've officially lost control of your school.

The boy maintains that he never said it; that the words were put in his mouth by the parent who questioned him. That parent happens to be the mother of the student with whom he is having a conflict-and she happens to work for Abraham Lincoln as a detention-room officer.

The tape indicates that rather than just spouting off with racial invective, the boy was asked first why he didn't want to cooperate with brown people by the parent/school official.

In court, this might be called entrapment. Not to mention a conflict of interest.

Virginia, you ignorant slut.

Good god and to think we once won WWII. In fifty years we'll be the world's biatch we're so pussy.

FTFA: she happens to work for Abraham Lincoln as a detention-room officer.

And she's getting a kick out of these replies.

So colors are right out? So if I said I was a "peach person" or an "ecru person", would I get reprimanded for racism? Who was that comedian that said one day we would all be known as paint colors (and it would be irrelevant because we would all be "burnt sienna"?)

I'm sure that Abraham Lincoln Traditional School Principal Virginia Voinovich is just following orders.

2007-11-28 5:45:44 PM

In an interview Monday, Voinovich would not address her comments, first saying she didn't remember the incident, then demanding a copy of the recording and finally insisting that she could not talk about a student's discipline.

Wow. She fails at public relations.

I imagine it is OK if you keep it to yourself. What're you gonna do, you can only judge people by their actions, not their thoughts.

The boy was suspended for three days this month for allegedly committing a "hate crime" by using the expression "brown people."

The things you people criminalise...

2007-11-28 5:52:52 PM
Well, it's not "ok". It's legal certainly, and no one is going to stop you from thinking your own thoughts. And it's better to keep them to yourself than not of course. . . But I wouldn't go so far as to say Ok.

Of course, reading the article, that really seems to be minor in comparison to what went on in the incident proper.

Maybe it's better to keep your mouth shut if you're a bigot, but at the same time it's not "OK". Maybe it's better to speak up so at least everyone knows you're an ass?

/oh I forgot the liberals like to police thought

Ironically, the only time I've heard the term "brown people" used in a derogatory manner is from lefties. "Oh, so it's OK to bomb the brown people?"

And some people wonder why some of us are so against the very idea of hate crime laws. Because this is the inevitable result of them. It is policing thought.

I assume "people of color" is still an acceptable term for the non-white hordes?

2007-11-28 6:01:58 PM
TFA: Neve said school officials didn't advise her of the incident until several days after they questioned her son. When Neve objected to the suspension during the conference, Voinovich told her that she didn't have any rights; that parents give up their rights to discipline when they send a child to school, the tape shows.

"If you don't want that, you can take him out of here," Voinovich said tersely.

Jesus, what a twat.

What's wrong with saying "brown people"?

It's easier than trying to figure out if they're from India or Pakistan. Might be a little bit of a faux pas there.

2007-11-28 6:08:18 PM
so should I now say "people who are not white but are by no means inferior to white people and are in fact superior due to increased amounts of Melanin in their skin, meaning they have more of something than us stupid whiteys who should feel guilty for the simple reason that we were mean to the people that have increased melanin at on point and we all know that white people are just stupid arrogant asshats and should all be killed." when I am referring to people of color other than white?

I am so confused

FI was hanging out with a firend of mine from Barbados and someone asked her about being black. She said very loudly, I'm not black I'm Chestnut." We called her Chesty the Nut for three damn years.

Every heard of mens rea? Almost every criminal law case is at least in small part, and often the majority, of the proceeding is proving the state of mind and thoughts of the alleged perpetrator.

Exactly. Except that the other, and equally important, part is ACTUS REAS (I'm sure you can guess what that means).

I don't see a criminal act here.

I remember, I was like 3 or 4, in my stroller at the mall, and I distinctly remember, out of completely ignorance of reality, looked up to a black man (having been unfamiliar with anything but whites), pointed at him and said "Mommy, look! A chocolate person!"

I was confused as to why my parents instantly freaked out.

LOL childhood.

Aren't black people a shade of brown? Aren't tanned white people also a shade of brown? I know some Asians who are also a shade of brown. Maybe I don't understand my colors...but I'm pretty sure most people are brown.

Wow, I feel so bad for this kid. When I was 12 I called a kid a derogatory term that starts with a B that is used instead of "Mexican." I was in an argument with a Mexican kid who was picking on me (I was picked on a lot as a kid) and we were trading insults. I suck at trading insults, and was losing so badly that I was crying. Yes, crying in school because some kid who barely spoke English was winning a Yo Momma contest against me.

So I called him a stupid baener. I didn't know that word was bad, because at the time I didn't understand that people can be racist against more than just blacks (I knew The N Word was bad, and never would have said it). Yes, I was a dense kid, but at the time I still thought that we fought the Civil War to end slavery and that pilgrims had big shiny brass buckles on their shoes.

This was 1987, in the last week of 6th grade. Yes, I got sent to the principle's office, and I had to write a letter of apology to Hector. Does that make me racist? No, I was a stupid 12 year old kid. My mom got a phone call, but I actually didn't get in any trouble at home for it. I guess my parents figured getting humiliated in front of everyone during lunch was punishment enough.

Jiminy Christmas people, let kids be kids. He said (or maybe didn't say) "brown people." Since when is that a hate crime?

/not a racist

Actually, "Just keep your mouth shut" is the exact message that white people use among ourselves.

Most illegal immigrants are Latin Americans
African Americans commit a disproportionately high number of crimes
Almost all terrorists are Muslims

But, you know, Shhh...

Everybody is the same and no one is better than anyone at anything.

xria wasn't defending the school, but correcting Cato's idiocy by claiming that hate crime laws are "thought crime" laws.

Much better.

My friend's daughter and her best friend got sent to the principal's office for saying that they were "chocolate and vanilla". Her little friend was black.

They were in second farking grade!

/Louisiana--we've got a long way to go in race relations.

that's incredibly insensitive to people without mouths.
