(Atlanta Journal Constitution)   Environmentally friendly building draped in black cloth because birds kept crashing into it. "No species is safe--it's the wall of death." In related news, birds are really, really stupid   (ajc.com) divider line

Magnolia warblers, Swainson's thrushes, ovenbirds - no species was safe.

Haha. They're just making names up.

I get to clean the dead birds from under my parents picture window. My dad and I think it is funny. My mom hates it.

I wish I didn't know that they weren't.

Warbler names are masterpieces of deception. The warblers named after states are named after states they don't live in. I saw a Palm Warbler in a generic very non-palmish New England deciduous tree. Ovenbirds do not live in ovens, especially when preheated to 350 degrees. And so on.

A few years ago, I was working on the 8th floor of a building when I heard a loud "whap!" sound. My co-workers and I looked around, but nothing had fallen over or was otherwise amiss, so we shrugged and continued working.

A few hours later, the sunset revealed an oily imprint of a bird in the window ... it was so clear that you could make out the markings of individual feathers. The print was visible at sunset for weeks afterward.

between 100 million and 1 billion birds die in the United States each year in collisions with glass.

That's like somewhere between 1 and 1 brazillion, right?

That's because they're German.

There was an article in one of the NYC papers about this, maybe six months ago. Some glass building was getting smashed into constantly by migrating birds. The funny part was that pigeons had no problems at all. Home field advantage, I guess...

That's exactly what the "bird mark" I described in my story above looked like! (only, on a building window instead of a vehicle) Uncanny...

It's caused a fine powder that owls have in their feathers to reduce noise while hunting.

True story: I have a big ass window in my living room. I once looked over at it just in time to see a crow smash into it. Couldn't stop laughing.

Some of the buildings at UC Berkeley have life sized decals of eagles and hawks on them to scare the birdies away.

But what of the boobies, the woodcocks, and the titpeckers?

2007-11-25 2:30:01 AM
I've had a sparrow bounce off my sliding glass door, which looks really frosted because I have a layer of plastic on the inside to make an air pocket.

Making glass more visible isn't the solution. Birds are really stupid.

There is a blue jay that has a nest in a tree in my back yard. He is smarter than these birds, but not by much. He will come up to the windows and attack his reflection - but at least he knows where the glass is and stops for it.

/He will also come and dive bomb the windows when we are on the other side of them.
//He thinks the backyard is his, hehe.
///He frequently outruns a falcon that lives in the neighborhood too.
////I watch the birds too much methinks.

Actually, the birds are usually really good at avoiding the really slow blades. They'll go between, they'll go around, they'll go over. The birds that do slam into a blade... let's go with Darwinism. If they're too dumb to miss the farm entirely by going over or around, and not nimble enough to dodge slow-moving blades spaced relatively far apart, the flock is better off without them.

Wow, architects discover that walls of glass kill birds. This has been a huge problem since the 1950s, so it only took a little over a half century. I guess you have to expect architects will be slaves to fashion above all else and totally out of touch with the impacts of what they do.

By the way, regarding wind farms killing birds, the one place where this is a huge issue is Altamont Pass which is one of the biggest Eagle nurseries on the planet. Young raptors who fly very fast from a young age are getting massacred by those things. The Darwinism remark doesn't match the body counts or impact on nature at all. Yet again, science scores zero and slaves to fashion reign supreme. Congrats!

they should tape a picture of a cat or other predator inside the glass, it would at least slow the birds down so they are more likely to notice the glass and not run into it.
