How are things going in Afghanistan, where we took troops from in order to people the surge?

FTFA: But the United States hasn't stepped up with the kind of special program that was used to help the Kurds, Vietnamese refugees in the 1970s and Kosovo Albanians eight years ago.

Times have changed, but that doesn't change the need for basic American decency.

Yes, I read it and yes it's a Bush-bashing story. Only angry liberals could take the news of Iraqis returning to Iraq and somehow twist it into bad news.

Of course, democrats are continually twisting Iraq success in entirely new ways (new window)

U.S. intake of Iraq refugees increases to a trickle

With biggie goodness for those who don`t RTFA

2007-11-24 4:20:42 PM
These Iraqis are among more than 2 million refugees in surrounding countries, and 2 million internally displaced.

yes and these 4million or so refugees have all gone back to their safe comfortable homes?

/no, wait, they are only refugees if they tried to get into america.
/no, wait, we didnt actually let any of them in (1600 last 12 months) way to go US :D

did you ACTUALLY READ THE FARKIN ARTICLE???
this was the LARGEST number in the past 10 years ...

Seriously...a greenlight for a headline that's an outright lie? I mean, Christ, it doesn't even attempt to capture what the article's about. Headlines are supposed to be funny by presenting the information that's actually in the article in a humorous way, not by completely distorting the facts so that our resident mouth breathing cretins can come in and whack off to their stupid little fantasies.

Especially when they don't RTFA first. That's like downloading foobies, then turning your computer off and fapping.

Afternoon_Delight: Only angry liberals could take the news of Iraqis returning to Iraq and somehow twist it into bad news.

Only a complete schmuck could read an article about 2 million refugees and an additional 2 million internally displaced persons and somehow read that to mean that "Iraqis are returning to Iraq". That's not at all what this article says. That America is "graciously" accepting .0008% of these refugees (which is not as much as the .0018% that they'd hoped for)* is the point of the article. Those numbers are, especially when compared with the numbers of refugees created by America's other wars, horribly low.

Apparently reading really IS just for liberal eggheads.

*all numbers are my own calculations and I suck at math and I didn't really try very hard to make sure I didn't make a mathematical error. feel free to correct these percentages. however you slice it, 1600 out of 4 million is a really small number.

Who needs spin? You obviously can't comprehend the article placed in front of your nose. You pasted in a segment of it, so it's clear that you clicked the link, but the meaning of all those letters and words on that page seems to have escaped you entirely, as your post of 03:58:45 PM clearly shows.

So to prove that you can make a coherent argument you....post a lame cartoon?

"Words" aren't your friend. I think even you realize that, which is why you use weak pictograms instead of factually-based arguments.

//ooooo did you read this far? but did you read the article FIRST?

I'm glad not to be a partisan asshat, so I can on one hand oppose the war yet also really appreciate the good news that come in without the need to feel that they are automatically false/doctored, otherwise it would have a shattering effect on my worldview by admitting that not EVERYTHING done by this administration is always 100% wrong.

2007-11-24 5:06:46 PM
The administration argues that because the world has changed since the 9/11 attacks, it needs to be more careful about processing potential terrorists. For that reason, it now requires that refugees be interviewed by officials from the Department of Homeland Security.

Continuing the simpleton philosophy that all Muslims are terrorists. They're brown, they follow a different relgion, and gosh darnit, we don't like their kind 'round these parts...

That's true; every once in a while they find ways to work towards cleaning up the mess they've made that don't completely suck.

Tatsuma: ... that not EVERYTHING done by this administration is always 100% wrong.

Exactly what has the Cheney/Bush administration done that I should feel good about? It seems like everything is in a worse place than when they started. Please don't say the economy, as that isn't doing well and is being artifically propped up by massive deficit spending, something that has to end one way or another.

The only one thing that is going well is the conservatives' War on the Middle Class.

He wouldn't make it past the cover before loudly trumpeting "SEE, LIBEARLS? CIVILIZATION IS AT STAKE IN THIS WAR AGAINST ISLAM" and then, when it was pointed out that the book blames Western colonialism for much of the current instability in the Middle East, would respond with racist pictures of Barack Obama or Fox and Corkum cartoons showing a donkey praying for defeat.

Back when the US had begrudgingly admitted 800 Iraqi refugees, Sweden had already admitted 18,000! Little old Sweden!

The United States has been dragging its feet on taking any refugees at all!

The UN keeps calling us out about it because we caused this refugee crisis in the first place! If the "flow" of refugees to the US has slowed, maybe it's because they realize they are not welcome here!

There was a time when military force, once accomplishing their mission, would declare victory and go home," Rumsfeld said. "Today, however, it often seems that when it comes to such missions, success means never having to say goodbye."

Befuddled: Exactly what has the Cheney/Bush administration done that I should feel good about?

As a screaming "libtard", may I answer this?

1) I've always thought that the "roadmap to peace" was a good plan. I somehow get the impression that making Israeli/Palestinian peace is Condoleeza's pet project, and good on her for taking on such a difficult task. Let's see if the upcoming summit bears any fruitful olive branches (yay! mixed metaphors!)..but even if it doesn't, the Bush administration has done (i think) as good a job as any previous administrations (and better than several) in working towards peace between Palestinians and Israelis.

2) Bush was really fast to jump on Burma (and to use the name "Burma" as a fark-you to the regime!) for their recent crackdown and for generally being repressive asshats. Thumbs up. Me approve.

3) I liked the way he handled himself in the days after 9/11 (once he put that damn Pet Goat book down) and I think the things he said, initially, gave comfort to a stunned nation and a stunned planet. I wished he'd gone in Afghanistan SOONER and was glad when a rerun of StarTrek was interrupted by "We take you now to Afghanistan..." and night-vision shots of bombs going off.

How's that? Do I lose my flaming libtard merit-badge?

I knew a man who was approached about hiring a couple of Iraqi refugees for a local business. He turned them down on the offer. "Would you want them working for you? No you wouldn't. How do you know you can trust them? You can't."

Headline:

Flood of Iraqi refugees into the US slows to a trickle as things keep getting better in Iraq. Quick, someone blame Bush

Article:

1) There has never been a flood of Iraqi Refugees into the US. Iraqi immigration peeked 10 years ago at 2,000.

2) Iraqi immigration is not slowing. It recently increased to 1,600 this year. (out of 2 million)

3) Bush is not mentioned at all, let alone bashed. "The administration" is quoted as saying increased security is the reason for the low numbers.

Conclusion:

Headline writing reaches a new Fark low.

I cannot imagine that the same RNC which comes up with artful work like "Swift Boat Veterans" and the big scary face of Willie Horton and "It's Morning in America" and other such finely-crafted attention-getters would have anything to do with Mr. One-Note-Samba and his witless cartoons.

(Personally I'm impressed that he's managed to keep Chappaquidick out of the conversation!)

The realization that Afternoon_Delight suffers from Belief Persistence, also known as Tolstoy syndrome, has helped me to understand this person.

Let's all have a little sympathy for a seriously
confused (dare I say deranged) individual as
his entire world is built on a foundation of lies.
