2007-11-21 1:26:59 PM
No one who is defending us (or freedom, etc.) is in Iraq.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

I'd like to thank them for being over there fighting and dying in that senseless clusterfark so I don't have to.

I assume submitter means they are defending themselves and against a bunch of pissed of people that don't want them around.

From Wiki:
Broadly speaking, liberalism emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity. Different forms of liberalism may propose very different policies, but they are generally united by their support for a number of principles, including extensive freedom of thought and speech, limitations on the power of governments, the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market or mixed economy, and a transparent system of government.[2] All liberals - as well as some adherents of other political ideologies - support the form of government known as liberal democracy, with open and fair elections, where all citizens have equal rights by law.

WTF team are you on?

I'd prefer they come home and defend me from the politicians.

Well. Instead of sending them my thanks, maybe I should just send them the link to this thread with the title "Fark Supports the Troops!"

I think Fark generally supports the troops, just not this headline.

I'm sure any troops reading this will understand and appreciate that distinction.

"We support you. Not so much your blind obedience to Dear Leader's failed political agenda, and we sneer at your stupidity in putting your lives on the line. But we support you!"

If the snark from a TF thread is enough to upset some soldiers then they're a bunch of pussies.

I'm sending Christmas wishes (keep up the good work, hope you can come home soon and safe!) and silly toys to random Canadian soldiers in the 'Stan this year, same as I did last year and the year before.

While some of the comments in here have ceratinly been snarky, I have seen no one make this claim. You're making an assumption with a blind leap in logic.

I would love to send some cheer to soldiers fighting far from home on the holidays.

I would love even more, if I could buy them all a first class ticket home. I can't though, because about 1000 people in this country are making obscene profits on their sacrafice.

Would you prefer untrue platitudes instead?

"Yay! Osama is on the run in Iraq! Good jorb! Everyone in America is so much safer now that Osama and Saddam's WMDs are destroyed by valiant American soldiers! Hooray! Hooray! That's eleventy billion dollars well spent! 9-11 is avenged!"

Feel better now?

I'm so patriotic that I think invading a country for no apparent reason, spending trillions of dollars and thousands of lives, and then convincing a bunch of brain dead, fast food filled, morons that it's to keep Mooslims from blowing up their walmarts should be punishable by firing squad.

But what do I know. I'm just a liberal.

Ah, well. Maybe a few folks will send some nice messages to the troops without exposing themselves to this bunch of self-absorbed screechy Internet liberals.

Good luck with that. Seriously.

Anyone who expects a feel-good thread on Fark is lost in cyberspace. This isn't exactly Group Hug Central. We're utter bastards, especially when we can make it into a joke. Doesn't have to be a particularly funny joke, either.

Oh, good, a green lit link of an otherwise noble gesture turned into a poo-flinging match because people have a political axe to grind. Well, Happy farking Thanksgiving, everybody!

2007-11-21 4:16:04 PM
I get the feeling that subby was intentionally trying to start a flame war by using the "defend us" phrasing.

Well, mission accomplished.

/so to speak.

2007-11-21 4:23:16 PM
This thread, up to this point, (with very few exceptions) is an embarassment. The apathy shown toward the uniformed soldiers of this country, especially by it's own citizens, is disgraceful at best.

This isn't a political thread asshats, it's an attempt at wishing well those of us who are not fortunate enough to be home with family. It's heartbreaking to think that these men and and women, who put their lives on the line every day to protect your liberties, are then bashed with the use of said liberties. The fact that they are over there, doing their respective jobs does NOT reflect their faith or allignment with the policies of the current administration.

Have some f***ing respect.

That said, thank you soldiers for doing the job that others are unable (or unwilling) to do. I offer my gratitude and a hope that we may all see you home soon. Happy Thanksgiving and even if you don't celebrate said holiday, may the rest of your tour be safe and peaceful. Keep your head down. Stay safe. Hooah.

Nabb1: Oh, good, a green lit link of an otherwise noble gesture turned into a poo-flinging match because people have a political axe to grind. Well, Happy farking Thanksgiving, everybody!

A "noble gesture" would have been to simply write, "Send a word of think to the American troops who won't be home tomorrow and the families of those who will never be home again."

What the submitter did, though, was start a flame war with "because they're defending us in Iraq", one that was as predictable as the results of dropping a match on a southern California hillside. He either did it on purpose or he's a moron for not seeing it coming.

coordman: The fact that they are over there, doing their respective jobs

The headline wasn't asking folks to thank them for "doing their jobs", that is something I thank every soldier for the last 230 some years for. And people here aren't saying "those soldiers over there suck / are stupid / are evil". What people are saying is that the headline is a gross misstatement of the situation.

And what I'm saying is that it shouldn't matter. Just because subby tipped his hand with his wording doesn't mean we can't pull ourselves above it. There are plenty of farkers over there that will see this thread when it hits the main page. Wouldn't it have been nice if everyone could have left their political affiliations at the fecking door? Shiat like this is what is going to kill this country.

I'm thankful that the troops are willing to risk their lives to defend our freedom. If that isn't how they get used, it isn't their fault.

2007-11-21 4:35:02 PM
im curious. what freedoms are they defending? exactly how was iraq a threat to my right of freedom of speech, my right to bear arms? if anything, the war in iraq is taking away my freedom of speech and the right to bear arms. so, fark the war and ALL who support it.

What liberties, pray tell, are they protecting for us in Iraq?
