(Variety.com)   The writers' strike is starting to get nasty. Which, of course, is Rush Limbaugh's fault   (variety.com) divider line

Uh, well, they are an industry publication. If they take a position on the strike, they are likely to get criticized for it. 'Them's the breaks, kid.

Bah. They could just as easily blame Fark.

We were all bound to get to a football team mentality about everything anyway. No one has the time to fully understand every issue out there today. This was all well and good when news was filtered and the issues were limited, but now that we're inundated with information, no matter how minor, choosing a side automatically is the easy way to go.

For instance, there was a one minute radio piece tonight about PG County near DC having to force parents to come to court to get their kids immunizations for school or face jail time. A concerned parent might make a compelling argument about their right to choose what their children take as medicine. A legal scholar might argue about personal freedoms and legal rights of children. A poor person (and most of the parents are poor) might point out they are probably working too much to force their kids to do much of anything.

But a guy listening to the radio on his way home from work? I thought "It makes perfect sense because they're offering the vaccines right there in the courthouse". I didn't even think that most of the parents probably can't take off work to make it there in the first place. If you had asked me three hours ago if they should put the parents in jail, I might have said "Sure" without even thinking about it.

Getting all the information about any conflict would be tantamount to reading every thread on Fark. And even then, how does one filter out the truly bad information without doing some work themselves?

It's much, much more efficient short term to figure "my team or their team" and go from there. The long term damage is obvious.

I was sure that the unified theory of Bush/global warming was the cause.... who knew?

No. Most of it is Bush's fault.

Rush Limbaugh is FAT. And you know who else was fat?

2007-11-15 12:13:56 AM
Rush does 15 hours a week with no writers, and is on all year round.

Most TV shows need a whole crew of writers to crank out one hour a week for a maximum 22-week season.

They're just jealous of his superior talent.

IF leftist Hollyweird wasn't run by a bunch of limousine libs who say one thing but do another and instead was run by Rush Limbaugh, we wouldn't be having this strike. Everyone would be happy and making money and good products.

Winston Churchill?
/just wondering.

Fark these greedy clowns. Writers wanting residuals for years is like a painter wanting a check every time a house they painted is sold.

So there's no practical difference between someone who's artistic work is used again and again and someone who's work is done when he's done? So you don't mind the studios making money constantly on their work, but they shouldn't? I have to completely disagree with you here.

Apparently AD's comic strip has an ongoing writer's strike.

They have taken sides -- with the studios, who spend lots and lots and lots of money on ads in the magazine. Writers, not so much.

But the article claims I'm being unreasonable to point that out. Whatever.

Labor disputes have a long history of hyperbolic overstatement and there is nothing new about what's happening here. We're writers. We blow things out of proportion with words. We're not Teamsters. If we tried to get tough physically, well - let's just say it would be even more pathetic than what you're envisioning.

Yeah, no, it's actually nothing like that at all.

That was the best damn article I've read all year. Not just the parts about the strike, but everything having to do with charges of bias in the media.

And the comments on the article page, each one accusing him of being either a left-wing or right-wing hack, pretty much prove him right.

Silly fool, the Republican Spin Machine is part of no union. They do this for free.

Not even close. It's much more like an architect getting a check every time a house he/she designed is sold. Sure, they may not be building, selling, or financing the houses themselves, but it's still their idea.

And these houses (TV shows and movies) are sold thousands and thousands of time. What you're suggesting is that the guy who designed Levittown should have been paid for only one house.

where partisans now filter straight-ahead reporting through an "us vs. them" prism, seeking out accounts that buttress their views while shunning those that might challenge them.

Read history much?

Well, he is the man who runs America. Therefor, it MUST be his fault.

Yes, I was disappointed to find out he was addicted to pain medication. But being an American, it is my nature to forgive those who do wrong and then truly repent. They aren't perfect and neither am I.

/Dittohead since Sept 1989 or 1990, whenever he showed up on Atlanta radio.
