Ritalin only treats the symptoms so of course there's no long term effect. It's like complaining that your eyes haven't improved after wearing contact lenses for several years.

Always easier to believe things are made up when your not afflicted with them. While I'm in danger of sounding like a troll, I do wish people would think about what they say. Have you lived or even been friends with someone who is trully ADD? I'm not talking about one of the people who have been grossly overdiagnosed, so the teachers don't have to deal with asshole kids. I'm talking about the kid that would love nothing better than to be like everyone else during school. To be able to interact gracefully and to get good grades. ADD may seem like a joke to you, but to those who are living with it.. trust me.. it's no joke.

Especially if contact lenses could make your vision worse.

I was on ritalin for 7 years, and it works very well. I decided to stop taking it 5 years ago for personal reasons, and because I've always seen ritalin as a crutch, something to help heal and be cast off later. I would definitely say I'm better able to cope with ADD on my own because of the experience, but it's not easy and it takes massive amounts of mental discipline.

/I know, reasoned responses have no place... ooo shiny!

FTFA"Researchers found drugs such as Ritalin and Concerta do work well for short term, but no do offer improvement in a children's behaviour after three years."

Grammar - it's not just for term papers anymore.

Jesus, does the author have ADD? guttermedic beat me to the best sentence of the article (and shame on you for not pointing out "a children's behavior"!), but that whole thing is a gold mine of poor grammar.

I think should take up a punctuation collection for the grammatically poor. From now on I pledge to give one-tenth of all my commas and apostrophes to the grammatically needy, and hope and pray you will all do the same.

Please think how your life has been blessed with punctuation, and then consider that there are those less fortunate, who can't even manage a single period while you're extravagantly throwing around ellipses like they were nothing.

Great. Now, Ritalin is what we used for kids with short attention spans. If I was them, right now I'd be feeling a bit short-tempered.

Way ahead of you. It's time track down everyone whose made so much as a dime off ritalin and whack 'em in the junk with a baseball bat.
Just gotta get out the old baseball bat.

Something tells me this will make page 37 of your local newspaper, in small print, cut off after a half a paragraph and continued on some page you can't find.

As long as big pharma gets their money, who cares if the kids were misdiagnosed?

I was misdiagnosed with ADHD in middle school... they put me on Ritalin and it farked me up worse than I was before. It made me MORE hyperactive. So they took me off the stuff and rediagnosed me.

/now I'm officially an Aspie. With depression.

I could've told you that when I was twelve.

Except the short part. Stunted growth is always funny.

And I'm taller than my parents, so I could care less.

"The children (taking the medication) weren't growing as much as other kids both in terms of their height and in terms of their weight,"
You can't eat for the whole day and they NOW figured out that that makes you smaller?

Thanks cpt. Obvious and the D'uh Squad....

2007-11-15 12:00:17 PM
What people today call "ADD" is what people used to call "bad behavior." Selfish parents => children with no discipline => out of control kids => Medicate the life out of them => profit! (for big pharma).

Why anyone thought drugging children was an appropriate response to bad parenting is beyond me.

2007-11-15 12:18:54 PM
Oddly, I was on Ritalin as a kid, and I'm 6'4. Guess there are exceptions.
