(Yahoo)   Bill Maher writes an article: "New Rule: If bowling passes for high school athletics, then maybe it is time for a draft." And that's the whole article. In related news, Bill Maher is not only an asshat; he's a lazy asshat   (news.yahoo.com) divider line

Yahoo (via HuffPo, and it appears to be an ad) is just picking up one of his New Rules from his show and running it. He does a whole segment on New Rules with commentary on each one, which they didn't even include.

Bill Maher became 'political' when he figured it would make him more famous. It's amazing to me how politically clueless the guy remains, since his job now would seem to require him to have some political knowledge.

I guess the same could be said of dubya.

Some brilliant observations from a "lazy asshat":

New Rule: Politicians have to stop thinking it makes us feel better about a disaster if we see a picture of them looking at it out the window of their plane. You're the governor. Not Zeus. Unless you can furrow your brow so hard rain comes out, you're not helping. You're just joining the "Mile-High Rubbernecking Club."

New Rule: Old Spice will never be hip. Old Spice has introduced "O.S." fragrance for men. Yes, that same great scent from 1938--now in a spray bottle. Yeah, because that's what chicks dig: guys who smell like the uncle who molested them. "O.S. Like the men who wear it...a little too familiar."

New Rule: I don't give two fingleberries and a Mcshiat-all that Dumbledore is gay. I never wanted to know who Dumbledore was in the first place. Let alone his sexuality. What concerns me is adults who read 800-page books about magic schoolboys--and then try to talk to me about it. If I had the slightest interest in homosexuals with powers, I'd be a Republican.

New Rule: If you don't wear a costume, you don't get candy. Don't even think of knocking on my door unless you're dressed to impress. And don't bullshiat me that you're dressed as the Incredible Hulk. You're just a fat kid in a flannel shirt. Candy is for closers.

New Rule: Walk your toddler all the way to the door. I know, from your angle, it's adorable. But, from my angle, it's plain to see that little Madison is terrified. It's like "Dead Mermaid Walking." And what are you so happy about when she gets back? I just blew pot smoke in her face and took a Milky Way out of her bag.

And finally, New Rule: This Halloween, every time you see something that's supposed to scare you, like a skeleton or a severed head or a gay wizard--take a moment and think about fear. What are you afraid of? What should you be afraid of? What's really scary this Halloween is that the same group of idea-free losers who won the last presidential election could win the next one, by making us afraid of the wrong things. Which is why this year for Halloween, I'm going as something truly horrifying: a melting polar icecap. And I have the costume right here. [he puts "Melting polar icecap" on his head] What do think about it? Hmm? That's going to be my Halloween costume.

All right. Now, this week, as every week, all the Republican candidates talked about was who was the toughest in the war on terror. While the country's most populace state literally burned. The Democrats, as usual, said nothing, because they didn't want to offend fire.

The Republicans, including the "Scaremonger in Chief," sell themselves as our protectors. But it's always from fears they made up, like Iran. [with mock horror] "And their leader in Iran, who is pure evil. Ahmadinejad! Terror has a new name...and it's nearly unpronounceable."

At the Republican debate this week, Mike Huckabee said, "Islamofascism is the greatest threat we ever faced." Really? More than the Nazis, and the Russians and the Redcoats? In his latest ad, Mitt Romney warns eerily that Muslim jihadists want to establish an Islamic caliphate covering the whole world, including America. Yes, and I want to be adopted by Angelina Jolie.

And you thought the people who were scared of gays and Mexicans were paranoid. Islamic terrorists taking over America? They can barely get across the monkey bars. Our defense budget is $600 billion a year. They're using guns they took off a dead Soviet in 1981. I think we can hold Charleston.

We are the most powerful nation on earth, with the largest economy and the best military. And we're made to act the fool by a few thousand cave dwellers who still put out their video on VHS!

And that's the problem. Because of the incompetence that goes by the name George Bush--we have become the most insecure, paranoid superpower ever. We don't think we can get anything right anymore. We can't take care of our own citizens after a hurricane, or plan for our wars, or maintain our infrastructure. And our celebrity rehab facilities obviously aren't working at all.

Peaceboy: Yahoo (via HuffPo, and it appears to be an ad) is just picking up one of his New Rules from his show and running it. He does a whole segment on New Rules with commentary on each one, which they didn't even include.

It's like picking only one point from Letterman's Top Ten, then calling him a slacker.

First of all, lazy subby didn't bother to research Maher's "New Rules" gig he does every show (each one including a bunch of them along with commentary).

Secondly... does more words make a better article? Would it be impossible to make a solid, succinct point in 17 words? If I wrote a 1700 word column... is it automatically 100 times better than this?

My high school had bowling as a gym class over 20 years ago. Ironically, the bowling alley is now a gym.

whats wrong with bowling? I think ping-pong is a lesser sport

I was a big fan of Bill Maher for a long time. He was doing a good job of riding the thin line between liberal and conservative and he was proudly dating porn stars. But when I saw him introduce Ann Coulter as "his good friend," and then heard his diatribe against "truthers," it led me to the conclusion that he's turning into the next Dennis Miller.

rcain: New Rule: If bowling passes for high school athletics, then maybe it is time for a draft draught and some curly fries.

I was thinking the same exact thing. Pitcher, fries and throwing some balls down the lane.

Who's buying first round?

New personal ethos:

"New Rule: Walk your toddler all the way to the door. I know, from your angle, it's adorable. But, from my angle, it's plain to see that little Madison is terrified. It's like "Dead Mermaid Walking." Even though Bill Maher was treated terribly unfairly in the wake of 9/11, at least it killed his unwatchable show "Politically Incorrect." This guy has somehow made a career out of being not quite funny enough to be a comedian and not quite smart enough to be a political pundit (and, boy, is that ever a low standard).

2007-10-31 5:02:46 PM
Bill Maher is one of the only things worth watching on TV. Even when his bit fails or he says something stupid it's just about always more entertaining and/or intelligent than all that Mencia, Silverman, LArry David crap. Suck it haters.

2007-10-31 5:17:48 PM
I've been a big fan of Bill Maher since his show was on Comedy Central in the early 90's. He had the best guests on Politically Incorrect.

I'm 100% convinced that the American society would be better off if everyone from the age of 18 to 23 became part of the army/national service the way Israelis do.

I'm also 100% convinced that this goes against the spirit of the Constitution and the American way, so it shouldn't happen.

Yep, pretty much my sentiments.

Also, people hate Bill Maher because he makes sense about that which makes them uncomfortable. He's not always right, but hey neither is anyone else.

He's alright in my book.

GurneyHalleck: it led me to the conclusion that he's turning into the next Dennis Miller.

That won't happen. Not until he gets a show on a third rate sports network that actually feels good about promoting a totally stupid rant twice every commercial break, anyway.

Those commercials on Versus for DM's new show make FrankTV look like a real prize.

2007-10-31 6:20:11 PM
Tried watching his HBO show a few times. Makes me want to facepalm the TV.

My friend recently went to some marijuana policy reform thing at the playboy mansion and got a picture with him.

Normally a pic with a celeb would be cool but I couldn't get excited because I can't stand that man's voice or the words that are formed by it.

Military and ex-military people are generally teh suck. Not all of 'em, but in general.

So demanding a draft is essentially demanding that most of the kiddies have their futures ruined.

please, like most of the pussies here on fark could even handle bowling without becoming short of breath.

most of the women in the united states probably couldnt figure out the finer details of the game either - like the direction the ball is supposed to go. either that, or they would all complain that the ball is too heavy and have a man do it for them.

phlegmmo: I agree.

I agree that it's sh*tty beer.

Put that thing down and find something real to drink...

I love Bill Maher. He's a genious. I don't agree w/ 100% of what he says, but no matter the topic, he is always consice, funny, and logical. Yes, he calls the president a moron at every opportunity, and who can blame him...really....

His Halloween costume last year was brilliant....a chest-stabbed Australian nut-job.

I love it when he gets people on his show who get furiously mad at him because he's right about certain issues.

The Left Wing Media fantasy is kept alive because of awful shows like his. It is truly unwatchable because it takes something nonsensical or irrelevant like this article and attempts to make 30 mins of it.

/p.s. The Dude does not like where he was going with this.

2007-10-31 6:32:35 PM
Tatsuma, you are only half right. Those commercials are indeed awesome. However, actually wearing Old Spice is not. Don't let them convince you otherwise.

In his latest ad, Mitt Romney warns eerily that Muslim jihadists want to establish an Islamic caliphate covering the whole world, including America. Yes, and I want to be adopted by Angelina Jolie.

In the past I have maligned the name of Bill Maher, but I have to commend him on this point. American politics is an embarrassment to anyone with a functional intelligence.

Tatsuma, I remember you recently deriding Ron Paul's supporters as callow and juvenile. You mean to imply that learned, mature adults vote for people like Romney, Clinton, or Guiliani?

2007-10-31 6:32:42 PM
I'm all for defending my country, but I wouldn't do it until I was sure that I wouldn't end up in a corporate sponsored smash and grab.

You know how to tell that it's defending your country? It's when THEY attack YOU rather than the other way around.

And opus2k7, you should look up the word elitist. I do not think that word means what you think it means.

2007-10-31 6:32:52 PM
Bill Maher for president.

He is not a journalist, he is a politically oriented comedian. HuffPo isn't really journalism, either. Yes, it has news, but its no different than all of the other news sites and stations that runs celebrity gossip along with news of the day. I doubt Maher ever considered himself a serious journalist. It's an op-ed piece, fer chrissakes...

His show is one of the few beacons of truth in this media.

I don't quite understand how he can be friends with Man Coutler, either, but that reinforces my theory that she's all show.

Sure, he may be conservative on some things, but that's really not all bad, ist it?

Like him or not, at least he's a somewhat coherent and unique voice in this country. He actually has common sense.

And he bangs porn stars.

Maher for president, Jon Stewart for Veep.

2007-10-31 6:33:30 PM
The dude obviously doesn't understand competitive bowling. The high school level is far above the public open bowling that he's most likely familiar with. It takes plenty of practice, technique and coaching to be good at (average at least 180).

Oh yeah, Bill Maher's a douche nozzle who is more of a hindrance to the cause than a help.

//bowled my high school's first 300 game ever!

2007-10-31 6:33:43 PM
This was actually the first line from one of his online-only Real Time Overtime segments. The complete "new rule" was:

New Rule: if bowling passes for high school athletics, then maybe it is time for a draft. That's right, bowling, an activity that requires rolling a ball without spilling your beer, is America's fastest growing high school sport. Congratulations Ted, you just lettered in farking off. On the upside, there's nothing like polyester pants and a bad shirt to help a guy honor his abstinence pledge.

Nope

Genghis John: Tatsuma, you are only half right. Those commercials are indeed awesome. However, actually wearing Old Spice is not. Don't let them convince you otherwise.

It said "Old Spice will never be hip". I just proved it was, in fact, hip.

Doesn't mean it's not shiat, though.

Well, it is possible to be personal friends with someone, even if you disagree with his or her opinions, or even profession. Also, there's no way in hell Ann Coulter actually believes most of what she writes.

He's mildly entertaining, which makes him ridiculously funny to anybody that agrees with him. The rest of us are standing around wondering what they're all smoking.
