When I was 14 or so we had some neighbors over. My mom moved a recliner (big chair) for some reason and revealed a big old vibrator that had been underneath.

To this day nobody knows how it got there.

don't believe in ghost, but.....

when I was a teenager we used to break into an old abandoned factory where train engines were serviced. To get in you had to climb up onto the roof and go in a small service door that had no lock on it, climb down a ladder, and you were on a square spiraling stair case that descended around what I take to be a boiler, but I might be wrong about that. The factory itself was one big room, to accommodate the suspension of train engines so this is likely to be explained by an auditory phenomenon produced by some echo.

However, we climbed in one night and started down the stairs when we heard someone walking on the floor level toward our end of the building. We stopped and waited. We heard them walking all the way down the factory to right below were we were, then started up the stairs, and you could hear that they were going around a staircase that followed the same square spiral pattern as the one we were on. We heard them climb all the way up to our level but they were on the opposite side of the boiler, then nothing.

We waited for what seemed for ever and heard nothing, no walking away, no breathing. I grabbed a bar and walked around the boiler slowly, and no one was there. The reason this still has me perplexed is that there was only one staircase in the building like that, and it was the one we were on.

there seem to be a growing number of annual tell your ghost story threads around halloween. last year I think there were 3 or 4. This year there were definitly more.

we should just combine them all into one big thread to scroll through and not read instead of 6-7 threads we scroll through and don't read.

/hey look, that person posted a picture. I'll stop and look at that one.

My parents used to own a very small bungalow in a NJ shore town where we would spend part of the summers. It was very unfinished inside -- no ceiling or plasterboard over the studs and just a partition separating my parents' bedroom from the living space where my brother and I slept on a convertible sofa. Very cramped, so everyone in the bungalow knew what everyone else was doing. Had a nice screened front porch though, which had a heavy door that locked with a big old key about 3 inches long and stiff lock. And it had an old rocking chair and other furniture on the porch.

One night I heard footsteps that woke me. In the half-dark, I thought I saw my mother walk to the front door, turn the noisy lock and go out onto the porch. And then I heard the unmistakable sound of the rocking chair going back and forth. No big deal -- I went back to sleep.

Next morning I asked my mother why she had gotten up in the middle of the night. Her reply: she hadn't. So I must have dreamt about seeing her (though I knew I wasn't asleep) and heard cats under the front porch making noise (which sounds like cats under the porch and not the rhythmic creaking that the rocking chair always makes).

Next night I'm rather apprehensive and can't sleep at all. And while I don't see anything unusual (so it wasn't my mother sleepwalking, which she never did before or after), eventually I heard the rhythmic creaking of the rocking chair again, unmistakable back and forth, back and forth -- at which point I hid under the covers till morning.

Never heard or saw anything unusual there ever again. Just those 2 nights, as though whatever caused those events had petered out, like ripples in a pond.

Two quick stories:

--My wife and I lived for a short time in an apartment in an old house in Portland, Maine. Never had any recurring experiences or strange happenings there. One night, though, I got up to go to the bathroom. From the hallway where the bathroom is, you could see most of the apartment, dining room, living room. Well, it was fairly dark, and I was mainly just trying to avoid stepping on one of my cats. But, out of the corner of my eye, I detected movement and swear to this day there was a woman standing looking out one of our front windows. When I came into the room she looked up at me. but by the time I could look full on at her, there was nothing there.

--When I was about 12 or so, growing up in The Woodlands, TX, I was lying in bed one night, lights off. I was on my side and my back was facing my bedroom doors (there were two), which were both closed. I distinctly felt for about 2 seconds, a hand on my back. I wheeled as quick as I could and snapped my light on, and of course, the room was empty. I still sometimes get a little anxious sleeping with my back to a door...

My only experience was when I was a kid, and I got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. When I was done, I opened the door and turned off the light. I stepped out of the bathroom, still barely awake, and saw my sister's cat Pookie in the hall. She was a black cat, so there was just a cat-shaped shadow. I called to her, and she ran at my feet and disappeared. I yelped. Once the adrenaline woke me up completely I remembered that Pookie had been dead for quite a while.

Looking back on this, it was probably just a smear of light-burn on my retina from the bathroom light that my muddled brain interpreted the best way it could. But it was pretty spooky to me back then.

my boyfriend and i got new phone service since we were moving to a different state and had our old #'s/service turned off about a week before this experience...
we were at dinner w/ friends and my boyfriend got a call from his sister who was very upset. she received a call earlier that night from his OLD cell phone #...the person on the line was NOT my boyfriend and they proceeded to ask his sister how she was doing...if she was at grandma's and if she was going to be going out with her friend crystal while she was visiting. all very personal info that no stanger would know. at the end of the call she asked who was on the line, the person responded, "i cant tell you right now, but someday, you will know and be very surprised". she tried to call our old # back, it was disconnected. our old phone company also said it had been disconnected for a week.
the only thing we could think...their mother had passed away a few years earlier and that it was her calling.

My family were once visited by ghosts in our home. At first the ghosts appeared friendly, moving objects around the house to the amusement of everyone but then they turned nasty and start to terrorise us then they kidnapped my youngest daughter. Looking back she was acting a little strange the days prior. You know, like she was connecting with the supernatural through a dead channel on the televison. Anyhoo, long story short, a tree tried to kill my son and there were a bunch of murderous dolls and some guy ripped at his face like it was ground beef but we got some freaky troll like woman to get rid of them. It was pretty cool.

Here is a OUIJA story, so everyone panic....

My mother's family has a hunting camp in rural central New York State. It was built in the 1860s, on land that was often traversed by Civil War union troops and I'm sure we can throw some Native American burials into the mix as well.
Every July we have a "chowder party" where the familty gets together, gets drunk, and cooks "chowder" in a modified 55 gal drum. (Western New Yorkers will understand, this ain't your Boston Clam Chowdah, it's more of a stew, but I digress...)
In 2004 I took my friend to the family gathering. We, along with my uncle have an interest in the paranormal, while everyone else just thinks we are stupid.
The three of us were using the Ouija board in the upstairs front bedroom. The board was very active and moving quickly and smoothly.
About halfway into the session it stopped abruptly and spelled out J-O-K-E. We all looked at each other, as soon as we took our eyes from the board, we hear this banging at the window.
My family who doubted us were in the front yard. They had put a ski mask on a pole and were tapping on the glass of the second-story window.

The board had warned us.... and we just laughed and thanked it.

A lady at my college, an RA, was sleeping one night, her roommate off at home, and she felt a presence. When she put on her glasses and looked up from her bed, she saw a faceless being that was facing her bed. She asked if she could be of any service, and then the being just vanished!

When I was in my early thirties, I moved out of my parents house and started college at VCU, in Richmond Virgina. I rented this old row house, where supposedly six sorority girls had been slaughtered by one of the local homeless men. Every night, when I would start to go to sleep, I'd hear this vibrating noise followed by a chorus of giggling. I figured it was just the lesbians who lived downstairs, but one Halloween night the noises got so loud that I had to cover my ears. It sounded as if they were right in the room. I wasn't sure what to do, so, naturally, I took off my Transformer pajama bottoms and stood with an erection in the middle of the room, eyes closed. It wasn't long before I felt a sucking sensation on my Optimus Prime. I didn't open my eyes until after I'd ejaculated, but when I looked down, there were six heads floating near my crotch. The next day, the Fark headline read: Six Severed Sorority Sisters Suckle the Sinew of a Stupefied Sophomore.

Jmast7: Okay, I'll bite. Not really a "ghost" story, but I posted this to a ghost stories newsgroup a very long time ago:

When I was about ten years old, I slept in a "Captain's Bed". It was a bit taller than the usual bed with room for a couple of shelves and a few drawers underneath it. I was prone to tossing and turning when I slept so there would be many a night that I would roll out of bed and be woken up by the meter and a half drop to the floor.

Now I don't know if this was a nightmare or not, but one night I awoke to find myself on the floor, tangled up in my blanket. As I turned my head, I found myself staring into a black featurless face with the exception of two glowing, red eyes. I screamed and the "thing" scampered away, moving quickly out the door of my room and down the hall. Terrified, I attempted to get back into my bed but something was preventing me from doing so. It seemed like there was an invisible wall between me and my bed. As my eyes adjusted to the darkness and I began to compose myself, I realized that I had actually not fallen out of bed at all and that the "wall" was simply the wall of my room that the bed was up against.

Now, I don't know if I dreamt the whole thing or not but several things I do know:

1. If I did dream the whole thing, then I awoke to find myself standing in bed and sleepclawing at my bedroom wall. This is the only time anything like this has ever happened to me.

2. It did feel as though I had fallen out of bed - something literally jarred me so that I felt I was awake.

3. This experience, even if it was a dream, scared me enough to burn itself into my memory for twenty-three years.

Just my little experience.

That's a documented sleep disorder called Old Hag Syndrome (new window)

It happens to me on a semi regular basis. Basically you mind is awake but the paralysis you undergo during Rem sleep hasn't disengaged. for most people it is marked by auditory hallucinations, a strong sense of a second presence in the room and, in many people, a visual hallucination of red-glowing eyes. Many researchers believe it is also responsible for most of the reported "alien abduction" experiences

I started working the overnight shift at my job about 4 years ago. Basically I just sat in my office and monitored systems from 11 o'clock at night until 7 in the morning. It was the 2nd week I had been there when it happened. Around 2am in the morning a woman walked by my office. She had brown hair and a flower dress on. I thought it must be someone that works here because I still hadn't met everyone yet. So I get up to go and greet her. The only problem is there is no one there. The only door in the downstairs office is on the other side of the building and the way she was walking she would have to pass by me again to get out. The next day I told the supervisor about seeing something weird. He says, "oh, did you see the woman?" I hadn't said anything about a woman yet and he knew. He told me not to worry about her because she doesn't bother anyone and others around the office had seen her. The only one I should worry about is the husband upstairs. Employees have heard him stomping around and you can hear it all the time. I never ever worked an overnight again. I asked to be switched to days.

(Back story). After seeing the woman I did research and found there use to be a house where our office building is now. The husband and wife died in a car accident.

Five years ago, my husband and I were house-hunting. Our realtor took us to a small, nondescript Cape Cod not too far from where we now live. The front door opened up onto a staircase leading upstairs, very wide with low stairs; living room on the right, dining room on the left. Ugliest salmon colored shag carpet.

Anyway, as soon as the three of us walked in, my husband and I looked at each other, and in the same instant I said, "Someone died in here," and my husband said, "This place is haunted." Totally unplanned. Freaked the hell out of ourselves and the realtor. Seriously, the house had the strangest feeling, very electric, like during a thunderstorm. The realtor implied we were being stupid and made us look around anyway; all the bedrooms had low ceilings and linoleum floors. It was so weird.

Someone other than us bought the place. We got ourselves a new realtor.

I was looking at the moon last night and thought "it's a weird moon".
Moon kills, you know. It feeds off the Earth. A night like tonight...
One of us could get up in the middle of the night, grab an ax and cut somebody's head off.
I remember a night like last night a few years ago. A guy and a girl went out driving. It was one of their first dates. It started out kind of casual, but they ended up deciding to go park. Not too far from where I live, as a matter of fact. They're going at it, listening to the radio. All of a sudden, a news bulletin broke in...
"Dangerous lunatic has escaped from the hospital for the criminally insane at Two Pines."
They described him as a monster, six and a half feet tall 250 pounds with one horrible distinguishing feature. There was a sharpened, stainless steel hook, where his right hand used to be.
That was enough for the guy. He slammed the car into gear, floored it, bounced off a tree didn't stop till they got to the girl's house. He got out of his side, walked around to hers. There, hanging in the door, covered with blood was a stainless steel hook.
The strangest part is that after all these years, after the biggest manhunt in Two Pines' history, they never found the killer. Some people say he's still up here in the woods waiting for the chance to kill again.

And I say...

I say they're right.

Alright, might as well join in on this party.

Up until last year, I had always considered the premise of ghosts rather ridiculous. However, last year I moved into an apartment on the bottom floor of a house in downtown Madison, WI (which I later found out was atop one of the first settlements in Wisconsin). My roommate and I saw a few things there that scared us shiatless, but I'll share the first, as that's the one that terrified me the most.

I fell asleep in my room watching Conan with the sleep timer on. I woke up less than half an hour later, as Conan was still on. (I only share this, because this is makes me feel confident that I wasn't dreaming) I don't remember who he had on, but I glanced away from the television into the opposite corner of my room from my bed and I see someone standing in the corner, staring at the wall. I tried to move, but couldn't. I tried to say anything, but all I could venture was hyperventilating. This seemed to catch it's attention as it whirled around and began to stare intently at me.

I don't think I can ever forget the face on this thing as long as I live. It looked like a girl of 18 to 21 with long ratty black hair, a faded gray shirt, and old holy jeans. Where her eyes should have been was filled with blackness. She smiled at me as she reached in the pocket of her jeans and pulled out something small and black. She began walking towards me and my bed, and I'm terrified - still unable to move. She starts unfolding whatever it was she took from her pocket, and it became larger and larger. From what I could tell, it seemed to be a growing black void. She got roughly a foot from my bed and I regained control, rolled over, and she was gone.

The eeriest thing about the incident is what occurred afterwards. It had been five days since I quit smoking, and I had a back up pack in a fire safe in the closet. No sooner do I think to myself, "God, I want a cigarette" than the guest on Conan speaks up "I'm so proud of myself, I just quit smoking." I thought that was a bit odd, so I grab the remote and change the channel - to a "Talk to your kids about smoking" ad. I change the channel again: an anti-smoking "Truth" ad.

I placed a cross and a bible above my bed and slept with the light on for the next week. With all that happened in that place, I had never been more happy to move out.

When I was a kid I grew up out in the country. One night I woke up by what sounded like one of our horses walking along the driveway (sometimes they could open the gate and get out if it wasn't latched well.) It was "clip clop, clip clop, clip clop," but it just kept going without changing location or getting any quieter or louder, as it would if the horse were moving. I looked out into the moonlit night and there was no horse, but the sound kept going, going....

Then I realized it was the dog drinking out of the water dish.

One time I was sitting at a table by myself eating breakfast, I live in a really old loft that was formerly a matress factory back in the late 1800s. The support beams in my loft are covered in old nails which were old bulletins. The nails are completely imbedded in the wood itself so you cannot pull them out and I would never try to take on out on my own since its a 6 story building thats really old and rickity. While I was surfing through some channels I looked at the support beam and this horrific stench manifested itself.

My wife went for a hair appointment maybe around a month ago. When she got home she proceeded to tell me a story that I'm still wondering about. She said just after she sat down in the salon chair and explained to the stylist what she wanted done, the stylist asked my wife something to the effect of would she be bothered if she said something odd to her or something along those lines. My wife said no, that it would be okay but at first she almost suspected she was going to be hit on. So the stylist says to my wife, there's an older, quite attractive woman who's been standing behind you since you got in here. My wife said she didn't respond to this in any particular way so the stylist continued to say that this woman would really like to be introduced to her grandkids and that she misses us but otherwise that we shouldn't worry. She said she wished she had smiled more but that she was never unhappy.

My wife was speechless. My mother died the same year my wife and I married, in fact shortly before the wedding. We hadn't visited her grave since our wedding day and our kids had never been. There is absolutely no way that woman at the salon could have known anything personal about either my wife, me or our family but she had details regarding my mother's personality that would be considered uncommon if one were to guess at random traits. I reallly don't know what the hell to make of that. I'm a skeptic by nature so since I only got the story via my wife and wasn't there personally I try to find an explanation but I can't.

We've taken the kids to the cemetary in the meantime.

I recently bought my girlfriend an old Crosley Radio. It's currently sitting downstairs at our place. One night while my girlfriend was out of town for work, I was upstairs playing on my computer when I heard music coming from downstairs. It went on for about 5 minutes or so then stopped, shortly after that the radio came on again and kept going for 10 minutes or so. I decided to man up and walked downstairs to make sure somebody wasn't in the house just messing with me, but everything was locked up tight and the radio was turned to "off" but it was still pumping out music. I walked over and pulled the plug on the radio and it kept playing. At that point I decided we really didn't need that radio anymore.

My wife has a story about when she was 15 babysitting her sisters at her parents home.

Her parents were out for the night, and she was sitting in the family room of her parents small house, reading a book. My wife reads and gets very engrossed in books, but for some reason she was having trouble concentrating on one particular section. She set the book down, and was getting out of the sofa to go to the kitchen to get a drink of water. When she looked to the entryway to the kitchen, she saw a ominus(sic) black figure that stood tall enough to cover the header of the door. Immediately she froze and her heart leapt into her throat. But just as soon as she noticed the figure, it was gone, vanishing into mid air.

For those of you who are the Sci-Fi channel "Ghost Hunter's" fans, when they were at the Seattle area Asylum a couple weeks ago, the cloaked black figure that covered the window was what gave her the most reminiscence of her particular experience.

I don't, with out hesitation, doubt her story at all. There are definitely some other-worldly phenominon in this world. I just hope I never get to experience this type of thing myself.

I live in a house that was built in the 1820's and I know at least 2 people died in the room I sleep in. It's a stones throw away from the one of the oldest graveyards in America and there is also part of an Native American burial ground on the property.

/Keep hearing things about opening a casino....

Pretty much anyone who went to Ohio University has a ghost story. Athens, OH is one of those "most haunted places" they show on television specials and for good reason.

Sophomore year of college I lived in Bryan Hall. During orientation, they told us that Bryan Hall had a resident ghost. They told us not to fear, as the ghost was "friendly", but sort of annoying.

I didn't think much of it until one night, my roommate and I were asleep when we were awoken by stuff crashing to the floor. After a few seconds of panic and scrambling to turn on the lights, we found that everything sitting on my roommates desk had been basically thrown onto the floor. Very creepy.

But then it kept happening. Every few weeks, the ghost would make it's way into our room and move our stuff around, often times throwning things on the floor and waking us up in the middle of the night.

The funny thing is after about 3 or 4 times, it stopped being weird and just started being really annoying. We'd be dead asleep at 4:00am and CRASH! At that point, we would just start screaming and cursing at the ghost to stop waking us up.

But the experience of being at OU certainly changed my perspective on ghosts.

That reminds me of the building where I went to middle school... but it was in Virginia.

It was built in the 1920s and was 3 floors high, but each floor had 20 ft ceilings. It also had a haunted annex.

My wife's old apartment was haunted. It was an old Victorian house that had been divided up into 4 apartments. We had so many weird things that happened there it would take a couple of pages to list them all. Mostly, it was things disappearing and reappearing somewhere else. We actually saw the thing in the kitchen on a Sunday afternoon. We were getting ready for dinner and this white glowing sphere just appeared between us. It stayed there for maybe 2 seconds and poof, gone. For about 2 months, about three times a week, we would hear this loud knock on the entryway door. I would open the door and there would be no one there. I just happened to be standing by the door once when this happened, I snatched the door open really fast...nothing.
We had an old, busted black and white TV that we used as a nightlight. On night we were lying in bed talking and this eerie, muffled voice starts coming out of the TV. I reached over to see if the volume knob had been turned up, but it was completely off. In fact, I couldn't remember the last time it had made a sound with the volume up.
It was kinda cool actually, I never felt scared, although it freaked the cats out a couple of times. We moved into our current house and nothing ghostly has ever happened.
