(Some Guy)   AP announces that "fragging" officers was common in Vietnam, but unheard of in Iraq. Why is this news? Because the media is still reliving Vietnam, of course   (opinionjournal.com) divider line

If the gub'mnt were drafting soldiers for Iraq, I'm sure that we'd be hearing more about the fragging.

/unless Blackwater shot the fraggers first.

That's a pretty frikkin lame attempt at 'good news from Iraq'. We're hardly even killing ourselves over there at all. That's fraking great news news about farking fragging.

Exactly

//Maybe another draft for vietnam 2 might impress a few lessons into the morons in america who think war is always the answer.
///and it better be a mixed sex draft too,if women had to actually fight this crap wouldnt be happening right now

Why is this news?

It's not. The AP is a press organization, not a news organization.

2007-10-18 6:15:48 PM
Unfortunately, the whole country is reliving Vietnam.

"If the gub'mnt were drafting soldiers for Iraq, I'm sure that we'd be hearing more about the fragging."

There is no question about that. However, if there was a draft today, the war would be over tomorrow. Thus, no fragging.

/Perhaps Cheney would shoot a few people in the face, but that's not fragging!

No, that's bukkake.

there's a lot of reasons for the number but no conscripted soldiers is the biggest factor. Another is technology. Your more likely to get caught. You shoot an officer in Iraq today it's a lot different than in the jungle 35 yrs ago.

...but unheard of in Iraq.

Sgt Hasan Akbar is supposed to get 72 virgins for doing it in the Iraq war; I don't think they were actually inside Iraq when he did it though.

There's plenty of friendly fire and fragging going on amongst the 101st fighting keyboarder division at places like Freep.

Akbar did it because he had been disciplined and was going to be left in Kuwait instead of being able to go into Iraq with his unit. And he had a history of mental illness.

But don't let facts get in the way of you being able to attack a Muslim.

From the Wikipedia:
Military officials for the most part did not believe his religious beliefs had anything to do with the attack, and attributed Akbar's motive to resentment. In a diary entry dated February 4, 2003, Akbar referred to mistreatment by his fellow soldiers:
"I suppose they want to punk me or just humiliate me. Perhaps they feel that I will not do anything about that. They are right about that. I am not going to do anything about it as long as I stay here. But as soon as I am in Iraq, I am going to try and kill as many of them as possible."

Son of God --
I find it a bit disturbing that somebody "with a history of mental illness" would be accepted into an occupation with ready access to automatic weapons, explosives, and armored vehicles.

runnoft is a shiatty neo-con whose [fark expressed] beliefs make me shudder, but Akbar rolled a grenade into a tent where his fellow soldiers were sleeping. This action has NO defense. Not even if he's a muslim. Not even if they were mean to him. So shut up son of god. Don't play with the trolls. Especially not if you're in the wrong.

I'm not excusing his behavior, I'm pointing out that it had nothing to do with him being a Muslim.

Graham Nash was on CNN the other night, complaining that students weren't getting shot by National Guardsmen this time around. Waah.

Damn that all-volunteer military and their aggravating esprit de corps!

The difference is this time the enlisteds and the officers are the same side. They both want the fark out of the war.

Maybe it's because the US won the war in Iraq in like three weeks, and they've just been farking about for the last four years?

Whereas in Vietnam they got farkall done in ten years.

Anybody who thinks the two situations are parallels should be smacked in the head.

yes, i see that now.

This is in the Wall Street Journal! What the hell does it have to do with the stock market? Rupert Murdoch has already ruined it. That sure didn't take long.

Comparisons between this long, violent counter insurgency operation and our nation's last long violent counter-insurgency operation are somehow inappropriate.

Perhaps the neo-cons should have learned something from Vietnam, instead of just biatching about how everyone else is still stuck in the past.

2007-10-18 7:09:30 PM
Didn't Bush also compare Iraq with Vietnam?

2007-10-18 7:12:16 PM
Hell, even calling it a war in Iraq is just public relations. It's an occupation. If the troops leave, the war was not lost. They kill practically everyone that comes into any armed conflict with them.

2007-10-18 7:14:21 PM
iccky: Perhaps the neo-cons should have learned something from Vietnam

The trouble is that they think that they did learn something.
We should have stayed. It was the fault of the liberal hippies that we lost. The President needs more power to prosecute wars.

These people learn. It's just that what they learn is all bull shiat.

What would you expect drafting a bunch of Liberals?

I know that cause I was drafted so I know of what I speak.
I had values but under the present bar level I was at 19 a liberal.

We have a superior volunteer fighting force , maybe not the largest [ after all Turkey's is #3 or #4 ] but it is superior in every other way except in backup by the elected officials.
Who are trying after sending them in harms way to use subterfuge to make them loose a battle in a war that may go on through many administrations and possibly several generations just to gain power without a plan of their own .

It's not happening in Iraq because the officers are getting screwed just as bad as the enlisted.

Soldiers really need to to start fragging republicans, neocons and military contractors whenever they visit the green zone. That'll get some results...eventually.

And it'd be an especially good idea for our troops to start fragging Blackwater mercs whenever they get a chance. They're not real Americans anyway. Just scum.

2007-10-18 8:08:03 PM
Ah so thats why the Staff prefers "volunteers" instead of citizen-conscripts...

Yeah, just wait until the felons the Army let join up in the past couple years start to get anxious with the situation.

Worst. Sentence. Evar.

WTF does that even mean?

Today's greenlights are BOOORRRRIIIINNNNNGGGG.

Hint: articles that whine about the "mainstream media's" supposedly unfair treatment of the Iraq War are not interesting, they're stupid.
