(Wall Street Journal)   The good news is that Hillary and Obama are giving all of Hsu's direct donations to charity. The obvious news is that Hsu's direct donations are only a tiny fraction of the bundled donations he sent them   (opinionjournal.com) divider line

If only a system existed where politicians weren't bought and sold long before they could be voted on.

I wish this would bring down Hillary and Obama. then maybe Kucinich would have a chance? Maybe?

I remember the old days when dodgy and/or corporate campaign contributions sent a mess of people to jail, and they had to leave politics in disgrace.

We've come a log way since then.

/wanna go back

Take the Paw family of Daly City, Calif., which is headed by a mail carrier who makes $49,000 a year. Members of the family have given almost $300,000 to politicians, including Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama, since 2004, often on or about the same days that Mr. Hsu gave money. The U.S. Justice Department is investigating whether any Hsu donors were illegally reimbursed for their contributions.

I assume the above would be illegal (since the Justice Dept is looking into it), which is good. The thing I see here though is wouldn't you be a little less obvious than having a family (of at least three) that makes at most (including spouses income) around $65-70,000 a year, give on average $100,000 a year to political campaigns? This seems really stupid, or nobody thinks they'll be caught.

As long as money = free speech this is what will happen for all sides. Unless you're Mr. Romney and buy your way in.

Once again it's time to see if we have a justice system that can control our government. I hope it can, but I'm not entirely optimistic.

I bet those charities will keep like 5% and give all the money back to the campaigns. And they'll get away with it because nobody keeps track of campaign donations.

Why don't we just put all 300,000,000 American's names into a hat and pick a President. We get such absolute shiat running how could that possibly be any worse?

Think of the possibilities:

President Henry Earl.

Weren't we told with certainty just last week by a great many leftist Farkers that this was all a non-story cooked up by the haters at the Wall Street Journal and that this pattern of donations was simply a coincidence and b-b-b-b-b-but Tom DeLay?

Are right wingnuts really as desperate as their peddling of this would indicate?

What this story is missing is any wrongdoing on the part of the candidates.

Not saying there isn't any, it's just that there's none that have come out.

Yet.

Wake me when political favors, bribes and such make it into the story.

Public campaign finance reform is what's needed. Candidates shouldn't have to go to slugs like this or the guy working for Romney.

Not even close, folks.

Erm, what did Clinton and Obama do that's illegal? Are they supposed to do a background check on every single person who donates money to their campaigns? How, exactly, are they supposed to know which are the fraudulent donations and which are the legitimate ones that Hsu also provided?

2007-09-10 5:37:08 PM
C'mon everybody! Jump on! It's a big ol' scandal! WSJ and Hugh Hewitt say so! Forget about Craig, and Abramoff, and Iraq, and all that!

Hello? Hello?

eraser8:
How is this a major story?

The part about how one of the two major political parties - the one that recently ran on a "no more corruption" platform - took in literally millions of dollars from a convicted felon with no visible means of making that money. The bad part is that this guy has one major obvious connection in his background - organized crime - and a possible other one - the Chinese government. You know - the same Chinese government that was involved in the last Clinton campaign fund problems.

You see, when someone wants to bribe a politician nowadays, they use "cutouts" - people with no provable connection to the people paying the bribe. They give a huge pile of money to the politician's campaign fund (or their party), and while their name isn't on the check, they make it known that this largesse comes from someone with a very specific interest.

This campaign fund money helps get their bribee elected, and if some cash gets siphoned off (to pay for things like renting corporate jets or staying in five-star hotels), that's okay by them.

2007-09-10 5:38:42 PM
Please nobody panic! This is all okay! It is only Democrats that are involved and they would never do anything to hurt us. Let them do what they want and they will give us all every thing we need; health care, security, lollipops, kittens and warm fuzzies. AND it won't cost anybody anything.

If this were the farking Republicans it would be an evil plot against the American public.

A total of 120 participants in the fund-raising scandal either fled the country, asserted their Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination, or otherwise avoided questioning.

Is that really true? It doesn't sound right, but if so, it is.... disturbing.

Hey partisan zombies, maybe some people who lack any party affiliation would prefer to see the dems run Kucinich or Gravel so that there would be a candidate we might actually want to support.

/would also prefer that the republicans gave the nomination to Ron Paul.

RTFA

These fundraising scandals are important. Yet the American public does not care about political scandals unless it involves sex. OMG the president got a BJ!!! Sellout the U.S. to a foreign goverment? *yawn* who cares.

The 96' election Clinton campaign had large donations sourced from China's military. The specific donation mentioned in the article was a Chinese lieutenant colonel in aerospace. Chinese aerospace was having problems with multi-stage rockets blowing up on their launchpads. When Clinton was elected, he signed off on American aerospace corporations showing the Chinese miltary how to build rockets to launch rockets into space. You know these rockets just happen to enable China to launch nuclear warheads over large distances. What country would China like the capability to hit with nuclear weapons?
Thanks Mr. President.
