Squatters run a youth center in the same building since the 80's, then get upset when the council sell the place to a christian group.

Yup, those guys are way out of line.

Squatters running the centre were evicted from the building by an anti-terror squad on 1 March.

I don't think that's what you're supposed to do with anti-terrorism squads. I'd have to double check the fine print, but i'm fairly sure that 'settling zoning disputes' isn't covered under the 'stop terrorists from killing hostages' provisions.

That's known as a "Watts Protest". I've always agreed with the way college students protest, if it's mostly not effective. Why destroy your own neighborhood?

Bah, there are a couple of Norwegians down there as well, and probably some Germans as well.

When it comes to punk squatters and their illegally occupied youth-centers that they've been running since the eighties, they're pretty much one big family in all of the southern/central parts of Scandinavia.

/Got nothing, actually.

Judging by the reaction, maybe using anti-terror squads to evict them wasn't so unjustified.

HMS_Blinkin: This. Copenhagen is in Denmark, submittard. Why would Swedes be in Denmark?

To help out with the stone throwing and buy pot. You will find a lot of swedes among those kids, I can assure you.

Actually, the Danes normally would blame the "gypsy population", by which they mean Turks, for this sort of thing. Although drunken Swedes are a good second choice.

eviljoeyoung: Squatters run a youth center in the same building since the 80's, then get upset when the council sell the place to a christian group.

Ehm - kinda. Way back, the original squatters and the city made a deal that the squatters would have use of a building as long as they stuck to the terms of the deal, mostly about it not being used for crime. Eventually, the squatters decided to not keep up their end of the bargain, and the city pulled their support and put the house up for sale, only nobody in their right mind would want to buy, except for this weird sect.

Fast-forward a few years, and the city tells the squatters that they've no right to stay in the house. The squatters thump their chests bout the big fight they'll put up, then proceed to throw a huge solidarity party - and the police storm the building at 6 AM the next day, when the squatters are too hung-over to do anything. (I am not making this up...)

Streetfights erupt in the following days, as the partygoers get their headaches under control. Every maladjusted punk in Northern Europe decides it's time to butt heads with the police and buys a ticket to Copenhagen, where they proceed to throw cobblestones - at the police when they're feeling brave, through random windows when they're not.

In the meantime, concerned citizens raised money to buy the squatters their own building. An offer yhat - get this - the squatters turned down. Nuh-uh. They wanted the city to give them a house. Nothing else would do. It was at this point that most of the locals dropped their support. Wanting a house to bang drums in is understandable. Insisting that it be handed to you on a platter? Come on.

Yup, those guys are way out of line.

Torching cars and throwing stones through storefront windows? Six months after the fact? Yeah, they pretty much are.

It's really weird when you see the swastika above the middle guys head. I'm only 18, so I don't know how it was back then. To be oppressed must be the shiattiest thing in the world. Especially in that situation, not knowing weather you would come home to an empty house or not. Or if you would live long enough to get to a bakery. fark man. Just...damn.

I'm surprised you, of all people, are showing any sympathy for how these disaffected hippies were rousted. Having anti-terror squads drop onto this building at the crack of dawn was pretty funny (and good training, because as noted above, most were too drunk/stoned from the previous festivities to fight back). The only thing missing was one of them blaring the Ride of the Valkyries.

Sorry, but these squatters have repeatedly turned down negotiations, and never kept their end of the bargain in terms of keeping the house. Frankly, it would have been quite simple for them to keep the house in the first place. But that would have involved abstaining from crime, etc...

It sure would be nice to live in a neutral country, where the only things to get riled up and distraught about are silly, isolated local incidents.
