lilplatinum, as a Texan, I'm surprised that you didn't mention Aggies. Because if there were ever a bunch of people who act like tools about their sports team, it's the Gig 'em Aggies! crowd.

The aggies don't even warrant my attention, our rival is OU as far as I am concerned. A bunch of hicks with penis envy who have to live in a really crappy town fly below my radar :)

...and cubs fans call themselves Schaumburg. ;)

However, as an unbiased observer I must state that Yankees pink hats are the most annoying fans. After 9/11 if you were worried someone thought you might hate America, and you couldn't score a NYPD or FDNY hat, you wore a Yankees hat. What the fark is with that? Also, how did the Mets get shafted on this?

Douchebag Lawnguylanders who come up here and can't park or put down the fake tanner are pretty much guaranteed to be Yankees fans. This is not a coincidence.

Not all Yankees fans are douchebags, but many douchebags are indeed Yankees fans.

As a corrollary to that, everyone here in Germany seems to have a Yankees hat.. I've asked a dozen people wearing said hat who the Yankees shortstop was. I think 2 people knew what a shortstop even was and only one of those could answer the question correctly. One said mickey mantle.

I got annoyed by our bandwagon fans in the state, but this is a new level :)

2007-08-31 9:00:00 AM
I am dead farkin' sick of hearing Johnny-come-lately Red Sox fans (and critics too) make any kind of comparison to Dallas's use of "America's Team." STFU.

"America's Team" is not arrogant. It was a brilliant marketing move by Cowboys management way back in the day. They figured out that there was a huge market for NFL football that was not aligned with any particular team, and they crafted an image of the Cowboys as representative of the values of that market, not dissimilar to a good-guy persona in wrestling. That's pretty funny now considering what we know about the lifestyles of those players, but the point is that the marketing had nothing to do with arrogance; it was a classic statement of shared values, which incidentally, still works in America's exploding Hispanic population. Resign yourselves to the Cowboys being America's Team for the foreseeable future.

And ignorant Red Sox (and Pats) fans can suck it.

"Red Sox Nation" and "The Curse" are both phrases coined by the pathetic Dan Shaughnessy, and no actual self-respecting longtime fan of the team will ever use either expression, unless it's with calculated sarcasm.

I don't know. I could see that fan base being less obnoxious about it. They'd probably just get together over beers and sing Steve Goodman songs. Too bad I won't live to see it. I turn 35 next month.

As a Yankees fan, I am obviously biased. However I agree that Red Sox fans are the worst. For years the Red Sox were second fiddle (if that) to the Yankees in the Al East. I'm talking all the way back to the days of Ruth. Sure they had a couple of good seasons in there and actually made it to the World Series a few times, only to lose in often tragic fashion.

Finally, in 2004, they come back against the Yankees in a huge way and go on to win the World Series. Congratulations. Apparently unbeknownst to many Red Sox fans, some team wins the WS every year. One World Series win, however long in coming, does not magically erase years of falling short. All of a sudden, Sox fans felt like they had a right to sit at the big table, alongside the Yankees and act like their team was and always has been on equal footing. The only thing Sox fans have going for them is that their team happens to be in the same division as the Yankees, otherwise they would be the team with the local following and the crappy history that nobody cares about-- kind of like the Pirates.

What's a little trash talk between fans? That's like half the fun of rooting for a team.

Anyway, I grew up in Boston and they taught me about the curse of the bambino in 1st grade during class, so I am biased too. I will always root for the Sox.

Of course now I live outside Philly, so my desire to root for a team that always loses in tragic and stupid ways is now satisfied by the Iggles.

That was all I was going for. I started to write an equally long winded reply, but then said, "aw fark it this is dumb" and thought it would be funny to "fix the post" instead.

The Red Sox have a history going back a long time with or without the Yankees. That the two teams' histories dovetail together does not mean that the only reason people like the Sox is because of the Yanks. That's just self-centered and silly. I know people in England and New Zealand who are Sox fans and they couldn't care less about "the division" or the Yanks. They like the character of the team. That the Yanks have been lacking in character for so many years does not make them the big bad big table team. They are just a big payroll. Though now that the Sox are spending just as much, it is silly to keep trying to play the underdog card.

How do you get 'baseball would not exist without the Yankees' from the above statement?

I was talking about the Red Sox, and despite what you may think, the Red Sox =/= baseball itself. Hell I never even said the Red Sox wouldn't exist, just that they wouldn't get the attention they do without being in the same division as the Yankees.

Tastes Like Chicken: I know people in England and New Zealand who are Sox fans and they couldn't care less about "the division" or the Yanks.

I don't think I have ever met a Sox fan who is indifferent about their standing in the division or the Yankees.. Methinks your friends in England and New Zealand know nothing about baseball, took a trip to boston once, and then decided to adopt the team they saw... Thats what I did with european kickball.

I've hated them since I was a kid living in Illinois. Cubs fans, White Sox fans and Red Sox fans all hate the Yankees. I don't know, even as a kid I just developed this hatred for them. Yes, probaly because they won all the time. Jealousy is a motherfarker, but their fans didn't help at all.

2007-08-31 10:31:47 AM
Anyone who would question the legitimacy of the term "Red Sox Nation" need only count the red jerseys at an away game (pick one). The bump in attendance isn't just seen... it's heard loud & clear.

Sox fans: Hope to win every year
Yankee fans: Expect to win every year

Tastes Like Chicken: The Red Sox have a history going back a long time with or without the Yankees.

True. So does every other team that's been around from that time period.

That the two teams' histories dovetail together does not mean that the only reason people like the Sox is because of the Yanks.

I don't think anyone has said or would say that someone would like the Red Sox because of the Yankees. That makes no sense.

I know people in England and New Zealand who are Sox fans and they couldn't care less about "the division" or the Yanks. They like the character of the team.

So you know some foreign pink hats. Congratulations.

That the Yanks have been lacking in character for so many years does not make them the big bad big table team.

Just because they didn't refer to themselves as 'idiots' or create a catchy slogan such as "Cowboy Up" does not mean they lacked character.

Though now that the Sox are spending just as much, it is silly to keep trying to play the underdog card.

Agreed.

Impartial observer:

At Safeco Field, when out of town teams come in, this is the order of obnoxiousness I see:

1) Red Sox. On their own planet. Will step on your toes to shove past and not apologize, a cardinal sin up here. Will start a fight in the stands for no reason other than drunk. Will not stfu.

2) Yankees. Pushy, but you can mock them and they take it, might return a joke or two. A lot more self assured than Red Sox fans, who seem perpetually "chip on the shoulder."

We had some people up here wearing "Yankees Suck" t shirts and the New York fans actually thought it was funny. Which it was. I could imagine doing that to Boston fans and they'd want to pick a fight.

It was more of an exaggeration to point out yankee fans' sense of self-importance.
Most yankee fans I know seem to think that if their team doesn't win it all every year, they were robbed or cheated, and every other team sucks.

i never said anything about the red sox being the only thing or anything at all. i don't hear shiat about the sox here anyway; about as much as i do about the d-rays. I actually was sick of sox coverage from reading the boston papers while i was on vacation

History doesn't mean dick. Those teams of bygone days are long gone and whoever keeps bringing up the past (usually Yankee and Celtic fans) can suck my ass. The only thing that matters in the here and now is how your team is playing right now, this season and who will win this year. After that, it will be history, too.
So you Yankee and Celtic fans, keep bringing up all those championships past if you must, but it don't mean shiat today.
