The new Red Sox fans are pretty damn annoying. But Philly fans are much bigger douche bags. Mets fans are also pretty bad. But going to a Phillies/Mets game was pretty funny. I saw more people tossed from my section in that one game than I've seen in 15 years of watching the Cardinals.

And Red Sox Nation is supposed to talk about the entirety of their fan base, not the fact that they are the USA's team.

2007-08-31 2:52:25 PM
"Red Sox Nation" is indeed a little annoying, coming from someone who was a Red Sox fan before all this pink-hat bullshiat started.

It's nowhere near as annoying as Patriots fandom is becoming though. Honestly, I might not even follow the Pats this year. They're becoming the Cowboys of the 00's.

I can deal with the Pats fans - at least they've got a reason to be cocky. What drives me nuts are the damn Celtics fans, who haven't stopped blathering since Garnett showed up. Jesus, what insufferable cocks. If you haven't won a damn thing since the 80s, you don't get to talk about all your rings. I mean even the Yankees have a ring with a "2" in the front digit.

No argument here. I decided from day one that I am NOT jumping on the Celtics bandwagon.

You know what really pisses me off? People who wear Yankees hats in Boston. I don't care that there are people from NY who move to Boston and root for the Yankees. I can accept that. But if you wear the hat on the streets of Boston, YOU ARE DELIBERATELY DOING IT TO TRY AND START A FIGHT WITH RED SOX FANS. Cut that shiat out.

And yes, it's just as bad when Red Sox fans wear their attire in NY. You'll never see me going to NY wearing Red Sox clothing. If you're going to visit/move to a city, at least have some token amount of respect for where you are and DO NOT go in wearing the enemy colors.

It's almost as annoying as the asshole New York college kids who move to Boston for school, and then complain how much the pizza/bagels/Chinese/etc all suck compared to New York. Hey shiathead, NOBODY put a gun to your head and forced you to move here and eat it. And then they eat it anyway. Go the fark back to NY if it's so much better!

For the record, I actually love the city of New York and some of the people there. Just not the assholes, or their sports teams.

Of course your not giving up on the Sox Gimpy, because they are in first place. Bandwagon fans like yourself will stick it through until they start losing.

Plus, you have to work on all your fifth grad homophobic jokes to use in future fark threads, and actually watching baseball would interfere with that.

I'm a red sox fan, but I do get a kick out of the die-hard fans who call into WEEI. However, they never whine like some posters suggested above. They do try and rationalize losses, though.

I don't see what any of that has to do with the Yankees or New Yorkers. I Live in NYC currently and I see people with Red Sox gear CONSTANTLY. I also know plenty of people who daily wear a Chicago Bears hat or Timberwolves jersey or Phillies cap, etc.

For better or worse, most sports fans feel they can wear their old team clothes in a new city.

FlyingPig: And yes, it's just as bad when Red Sox fans wear their attire in NY.

Actually, that doesn't bother me. Why should I care what team a stranger roots for?

I'll tell you one thing that bothered me, though. With a two year old, I go through an awful lot of milk, so I drove a bit further to get it on sale at a place that was advertising a gallon for $2.99 which is great because they are usually around $4.79/gal.

Anyhow, I get there and it's 'Hood' brand milk, which is fine, but all the caps had the Red Sox logo on there as some type of promotion. This is the middle of Long Island for crissakes.

I told my wife they were sold out...

I don't really have a problem with people in NYC wearing Red Sox gear. It's a free country, wear your gear anywhere you please.

I do, however, find it amusing the sheer number of people who feel the need to identify themselves as a Red Sox fan wherever they go. When you go out to a bar, is the backwards Boston cap really necessary?

Even more amusing is the family full of tourists, fresh from Walpole. Dad is wearing a Patriots shirt and Sox cap. Junior is wearing a Big Papi t-shirt and Sox cap. Little Miss is wearing a pink Papelbon t-shirt. Mom is wearing an embarassed look on her face that her family is full of douchebags.

2007-08-31 3:12:45 PM
Gimpy, you already ADMITTED you had abandoned the Red Sox after their 2003 choke job and didn't watch a single game until the 2004 post season when they "won" you back as a fan. Be proud of your bandwagonism.

Of course, like chi_guy you seem to have just descended into self parody at this point.

Interesting take. Where I take the bus every morning into Boston there's a kid with Downs Syndrome who wears Yankees shirts and hats just about every day. The bus drivers and MBTA workers give him crap all the time. He argues back, and they laugh about it. Maybe some poeple are just more grown up about the fact that some people like different teams.

Bill Frist: For better or worse, most sports fans feel they can wear their old team clothes in a new city.

A new city, sure, but not the ONE city that happens to be the arch-enemy.

If an Orioles, Phillies, Cubs or whatever other type of fan wants to wear their hat in Boston, that's fine. If it's a Yankees hat, as far as I'm concerned, you are LOOKING for a fight. And it's not like I'm the kind of guy that would even go and GIVE them a fight over it. I don't even bother talking to them. It's just the attitude behind it. You're proudly flaunting the colors of a team that you KNOW most people in the city hate. It's rude and disrespectful. Root for the Yankees in Boston, I don't care. But leave the hat at home.

Bill has no idea what he is talking about. Red Sox fans only attack players once they are off the team? Red Sox fans make more JD Drew jokes than anyone. Heck, even robsul has given us credit for inventing ones he wished he had thought up about bubble boy.

Although we have to come up with new jokes because that idiot refuses to get injured. Like I said before. It is ironic that all the fans of JD Drews former teams hate him because he couldn't get off the DL and red Sox fans hate him because he refuses to go on it.

I didn't say they didn't have the right to free speech. Yeah, you have a LEGAL right to wear your hat anywhere you want. I'm not saying they should be arrested for it. I'm saying they SHOULDN'T wear it in the opposing city, out of courtesy.

Well I wouldn't go that far, though I'd agree it is a kind of dumb and annoying thing to do. I guess I just didn't know why you framed it as a NYer/Yankees thing (or a Boston and NY thing). Everyone seems to do it. I've lived in DC, I've lived in the south, etc. I've seen it everywhere.

Oh come now Gimp, you've spent the last week trying to diss me with made up claims like that I said I'd claimed to never enter "sox threads" or that I had a 15 post per 15 day quota.

Gotta learn to take some of your own medicine.

And even you have to admit it was pretty damn funny when you were going on a rant and called your guy "Large Papi." I mean, you don't even know your own players nicknames, you can't take yourself too seriously.

Bill Frist: Well I wouldn't go that far, though I'd agree it is a kind of dumb and annoying thing to do.

That's exactly what I'm saying.

Bill Frist: I guess I just didn't know why you framed it as a NYer/Yankees thing (or a Boston and NY thing). Everyone seems to do it. I've lived in DC, I've lived in the south, etc. I've seen it everywhere.

I'm saying you shouldn't wear the hat of the team that is specifically THE MOST HATED team in wherever you're living.

Such as:

A Steelers hat in Dallas

A Pats fan in Indianapolis

A Cubs hat in St. Louis

etc.

It's just rude. If you've decided you want to make a place your new home, or even just visit, you at least owe the city a token amount of respect while you're there, even if you're not a fan of the home team. It's fine to wear a hat that isn't the home team, but not THE ENEMY, as it were. That IS a little bit like wearing "blood" colors on "crip" turf (alright, it's a slight exaggeration, but the same idea). You're intentionally trying to provoke a fight with the locals if you do that.

Granted it's a little bit hard not to do in places like NY and Chicago that have two rival teams, but for the most part, I think it's just a matter of common courtesy. You can still root for the enemy, just don't be OBVIOUS about it.

2007-08-31 3:29:33 PM
FlyingPig:

Well, I agree with you for the most part. Just saying I don't think it is specific to NYers by any stretch.
