ctobio: Ah yes, the old "Jeter is out playing golf today, this is better" sign that Pedro is waving at the '04 WS Victory Parade.

Proof that the Red Sox as a team have just as little class as their fanbase.

When a team wins, after years of losing, it tends to attract many new fans.

PeeWeePangolin: ...but the one thing I do not understand is how a team like the Dodgers, who has one of the top attendances year after year more world series than the Red Sox, and more seats than Fenway Park can't compete for the same players the Red Sox get, or spend like the Red Sox. I am sick and tired of the Red Sox Nation false sense of entitlement, it is one of the biggest travesties of modern day spectator sports.

How is it the Red Sox fans' fault that the Dodgers' owners cannot/have not spent money on players?

/made a grilled cheese sandwich without burning the bread

PeeWeePangolin: Kinda of funny that ESPN is trying to call out the very thing they created. There are just as many educated, passionate baseball fans on the west coast but alas we do not get the national coverage because old blowhards like Gammons, and the rest of ESPN's bristol staff is asleep by the time our games start. Someone mentioned that the reason the Red Sox get so much attention is because they are in the same league as the Yankees. I agree one hundred and ten percent. The Yankees do deserve the attention they get because of their many championships and this is coming from a Dodgers fan, but the one thing I do not understand is how a team like the Dodgers, who has one of the top attendances year after year more world series than the Red Sox, and more seats than Fenway Park can't compete for the same players the Red Sox get, or spend like the Red Sox.

They get away with it because the fanbase doesn't DEMAND success. Red Sox ownership, much like the Yankees, knows that anything less than doing everything possible to win games is unacceptable to the fans.

In LA, where half the crowd is on the freeway for the first inning and back out there by the 8th, there isn't that same demand.

SupplySideJesus:Hardly snobs leaving a guy alone, wouldn't you say?

I've been out in the bleachers for playoff games, all that happens is during a break in the game someone points out a fan wearing the other teams gear...the crowd starts chanting "A**HOLE, A**HOLE" while pointing him out. It is childish, but it's also funny. If you laugh it off, that's all that happens.

The Dodgers are 6th in payroll this season, and only about $35mil behind the Red Sox. The Dodgers, however, have to compete with the Angels, and to a lesser extent, the A's and Giants. The Red Sox have the good fortune of being the only team in New England, and therefore represent a larger market than it would seem at first glance.

Bill Frist: a) It is quite clear that the dude was deliberately trying to provoke them and indeed wanted a reaction. I'm sure he was carrying a sign with some famous red sox wit on it like "A-Rod and Jeter are homos" while carrying his camera and descending into the most famously rapid-yankees fan part of the stadium.

I've actually sat in the bleachers at Yankee Stadium during Yankees-Red Sox games, and watched idiot Red Sox fans go out of their way to be confrontational, and then have to have the NYPD have to escort them out of the area for their own protection.

Of course, I once had a set of these asshats right behind me, and some of those pennies and batteries were hitting me. I wasn't pleased. I even got up and yelled "hey guys, you're overshooting and hitting me. Aim better, ok!"

Actually, the NYPD escorts anyone out who flips the bird. Many times visiting Sox fans do not know this rule, and the Yankees fans will do the "asshole" thing to try and get them to flip them off. As soon as this happens, the Yankees fans cheer as the cops come to get the now confused visitor.

Actually, probably not. I mean, this is the same organization that caught shiat because A-Rod said "hah." You wouldn't see that from a player. A fan, surely. I mean, I tormented many a Red Sox fan here at work over the years.

I can see your point, but I remember through the 1960's and up the mid 90's the Dodgers were the Yankees West when it came to organizational structure, free agent spending, and marquee player acquisitions ever since onwership changed there has been a half ass approach to winning. It's frustrating and sad, now for some reason after ESPN had their mainstream explosion the Red Sox have received round the clock coverage, every other Sunday game seems like a Yankees Red Sox game, and I remember growing up the Red Sox were just another team like Orioles or the Tigers that really didn't make the headlines unless they made it to the World Series like in 86'.

Just pointing out that obnoxious isn't a geographically-exclusive trait. I've seen my share of socially retarded Yankee fans, and not necessarily at the ballpark.

I've also seen Yanks fans take their share at Fenway, and to their credit, brush it off with a smile. 26 rings will do that for a guy's confidence.

I guarantee you that I got hit with pennies, and I did see an empty plastic soda bottle fly at them, and a AA battery. But it was mostly pennies.

Mind you this was years ago. Last time I sat in the bleachers was last year, and it was considerably tamer then. It wasn't nearly as entertaining as it was even 5 years ago, and without beer it sucked. I'd rather pay more to have beer and be able to see the game.

Gotta second the bullshiat call. I know for a fact that fans in the bleachers at Fenway wouldnt stand for people throwing stuff that could hurt somebody (peanuts are a different story, those are fair game), even if they were thrown at an obnoxious Yankee fan. And I know Yankees fans are the same way. The people who claim to have thrown batteries at games are the same people who said they drank 25 beers before going in knocked out a guys teeth for pronouncing "chowder" wrong.

SupplySideJesus: I've also seen Yanks fans take their share at Fenway, and to their credit, brush it off with a smile.

I've seen the same in the reverse in the bleachers at Yankee stadium. You wear the hat or jersey of the opposing team and it's a given you're going to catch some shiat from the home fans no matter what stadium you're at. If you're an idiot on top of that, you're going to catch more than your fair share.

I've seen Sox fans get abused for an inning or two, then later seen the same guy getting handshakes and pats on the back once the game was over. It's all how you handle it. And if you can't handle it, don't come to the stadium dressed like a target.

I don't think it has anything to do with geographic location. My guess is that it is a resault of the Sox constant failures. Like the Yanks, they make the most money, have the most famous players and the most passionate big fan bases.... however, they have a history of choking and losing.

So, while a Yanks fan will be snobby he won't feel like he has to bother with some fan ofa shiatty team. He knows he is better, he has 26 rings to prove it. A Sox fan, OTOH, has a big chip on his shoulder so while he also thinks he is way better, he feels the need to constantly make everyone else know this by berating other fans and so on.

The amount of thugery is inversely proportional to the price of the ticket. Notice you don't hear about hooliganism much anymore in English soccer stadiums? They can't afford to get in.

I've been to quite a few Sox-Yanks games at Yankee Stadium, and I've never had a problem. Sure, I'll talk some trash to people, but thats all it is and its all in good fun. If you say something to somebody and they come back with "Fark you, you farking fark", well, you move on.

We were at Opening Night in the Bronx in 2005 dressed in our finest "2004 AL Champions" shirts. Sure, we took quite a lot of crap, and we gave it right back. Security saw us before the game even started and warned us that any swearing would get us a trip out of the stadium, so we kept it clean. It was funny seeing how many Yankees fans got tossed for dropping some choice words, too, but the majority of the fans had fun with us.

Hang in there with the team, man. Even the best team in baseball only wins 60% of the time. (OK, 0.597, buts who's counting.) Getting swept is a setback, but that's all. We're still ahead of where we were a week or so ago. Besides, it's fun to watch Wakefield pitch.

Well, I've already said I think Yankees fan base is pretty bad too, but I still maintain the Red Sox is by far the worst. Like I said, they have all the flaws of the Yankees plus a bunch of other flaws.

In this case, I'd say they take the worst parts of a superiority complex (they still view themselves as one of the only important teams, they buy championships, they are arrogant snobs, etc.) and combine them with the worst parts of a sports inferiority complex (they feel the need to make everyone know their team is great, they thing the rest of the nation cares about their biatching and whining every time they choke, etc.)

2007-08-31 2:27:43 PM
Speaking as a long time Red Sox fan (sports fan in general) I'm sure most will agree that the bandwagon fans make the most noise of all. And this holds true for any team.

It's the damn Pink Hats that start the "Yankees Suck" chants. It's the same type of idiots who have no idea what the score is of the Yankee game they're currently at. I've seen plenty of games at both stadiums and it happens equally.

Yankee "fans" throwing batteries at people, Sox "fans" starting chants about the Yankees when they're not even playing them at the time... it's generally the only thing you see because real fans are busy paying attention to the game.

People who post in forums such as these to scream about the other team's "fans" are engaging in the same type of behavior they're decrying.

And as for TFA, yeah-- the whole "Red Sox Nation" thing is dumb. So is every other marketing ploy the new ownership has engaged in (especially that RIDICULOUS show, "Sox Appeal", which ruins the game for the rest of the folks sitting in the same section where they're filming that tripe.) But then again, I don't find all the Yankee hype that great either. Especially those new street gang style hats. Nice work, there.

Hence the and/or. Phillips deserves a lot of the credit for how scary the Chargers' D has been, and he's not a hardass like Parcells was (we see how many playoff victories that turned in to). If it wasn't for Parcells sticking to his "Code," we would also have signed Adam Vinatieri instead of Mike Vanderjagt.
