I'm more pissy about the Yankees Universe T-shirts than Red Sox Nation (as a name), because those shirts were done in response to that name. WTF, the Yankees don't do shiat in response to those biatches, at least in principle.

PiperArrow: Now NESN would like us all to believe we need to join (pay money) to be part of RSN. Remy is running for president of RSN. They've ruined the whole thing.

That's why I said people should vote me for president of RSN. As Teddy KGB says, "It's all a big FAC-KING joke any-WAY."

I went into my room, closed the door, and fell weeping onto my bed during Game 7 that year. (Mind you, I was 24 at the time and I was crying while there still were two innings left to play.)

Man up Nancy.

Some Red Sox fans are good people. Some aren't. I've seen Sox fans (on the internet mind) say that they hoped Giambi's tumor scare a couple years back would be fatal and how the Yankees have been cursed since 9/11. That's why I will never be a Red Sox fans, no matter how much I can hate the Yankees. (and I don't)

And I can sympathize with those who hate Iggles fans. It's especially bad here near Syracuse where all these people are wearing #5 jerseys and bragging about the Eagles every day just because Donovan McNabb went to SU. HE'S NOT EVEN FROM AROUND HERE PEOPLE!!! GET OVER IT!!!!

Can't wait until he retires so these pathetic bandwagon fans can go back to their lives.

Piper, I can agree with that. The second it was sold to us with a trademark it became lame. But, that doesn't change the fact that there really isn't a bug problem with using a term to describe Sox fans filling road stadiums.

What a farking tool. Everyone knows Yankee fans are the worst fans in the history of organized sports. Ok, Raiders fans are a very close second.

Impossible.

Why? Because the Red Sox have every single flaw that the Yankees do plus several others due to their giant chip on the shoulder and constant failure.

The Red Sox are as arrogant as the yanks, they look down on other fans as much, they consider their rivlarly more important than anything else, they try to buy championships, etc.

But in addition to all the above, which apply to the Yanks, the RS are also complete hypocrites (whining about the Yanks buying championships or spending too much while doing the exact same thing), and they have this huge annoying chip on their shoulder due to their choking and failure that leads them to do idiotic things like chant "Yankees suck!" everywhere from Pats pre-season games against the Dolphins to local spelling bees. They are also the most in your face whining ranting fan base I've ever seen in my life. Yanks fans will just be snobs, but leave you alone. Red Sox fans will start foaming at the mouth and telling you how horrible your team is the second they see a cap that doesn't have a red B on it.

Worst fanbase in history. I'm not even sure what compares. Maybe british soccer fans (specifically Chelsea fans?)

I hate the Cowboys, but boy do I ever hate "Red Sox Nation". I'm not a Yankees fan. In fact, I don't much like the Yankees...but I'm a sports fan and boston fans are THE WORST. It's not even so much arrogance, but just blind ignorance. Every guy on their team is the absolute best ever, until he's not on the team anymore, then he's always sucked and we're better off without him. But of course, despite having the best player at every position (Trot Nixon should be an all-star!!) it's never about the players, we play as a "team". Oh, and everyone is out to get us. And the Yankees buy championships.
Real comments made to me by a Red Sox fan this season...
"Mike Lowell is by far the best 3rd baseman in the league this year, why isn't he starting the all-star game?"
"Oh yeah, when's the last time your team won a championship?"

As to the Weeners...I responded with A-Rod. I was told that "he's gay".
To the second comment, I reminded the Red Sox fan that it was 86 years between championships for the Sox and that it's my team had come into existance and won 2 championships during that time. Didn't seem to make a dent.
WORST FANS EVER!

2007-08-31 1:04:53 PM

The Red Sox have a history going back a long time with or without the Yankees. That the two teams' histories dovetail together does not mean that the only reason people like the Sox is because of the Yanks. That's just self-centered and silly. I know people in England and New Zealand who are Sox fans and they couldn't care less about "the division" or the Yanks. They like the character of the team

I think you missed his point. I believe what he was saying is that if the Red Sox were not in the AL East and did not have the rivarly with the Yanks AND had the same history (ie, decades and decades without championships, often failing to make the playoffs despite being the secord or third highest payroll, etc.) they would not have the same place in baseball that they do. They would be a fairly forgettable team outside of Boston.

I think this is a fair point. I mean, teams that constantly fail are almost always forgettable outside of their area. However, since the Sox are in the AL East and are chief rivals of basbealls best team (not this year, but over the history of MLB) they get cast into a David role that makes them the second most famous team.

Again, this is a very fair point. Of course, if they wenren't in the AL east perhaps they would have gotten into the playoffs way more times and thus won more WS. Very possible. Then again, maybe without the rivarly with the Yanks they wouldn't have gotten teh support and fandom and thus money and hunger to make teams as good as they have. Who knows.

2007-08-31 1:05:01 PM
Holophrastic: Don't like it? Well then maybe you should get a fanbase as loyal and dedicated as either of those two teams have got. biatching about it just reminds the Sox and Yanks fans that they have more in common with each other than the rest of you sad sacks, and that's an awkward moment to say the least.

That's a surprise to you? The Boston Red Sox have turned into the second coming of the Yankees. You spend more money than the payrolls of the lowest four to five teams combined, you have bandwagon fans across the country who fill other peoples stadiums yet don't know the starting rotation, and you talk and act as if your team and your rivalries are the only ones in baseball.

Understand, I'm not biatching about these things. I'm actually glad the Yankees and Red Sox have such large road followings, because the attendance helps revenues for small market teams. For that matter, as ridiculous as payroll gaps are, at least revenue sharing puts some more cash in small market pockets as well.

Nonetheless, there really isn't much difference between the Red Sox and Yankees anymore. The local culture may still be different, but the national presence of the teams is growing remarkably the same.

2007-08-31 1:05:20 PM
Wise Guy: Maybe we think we belong at the big table because the Sox are tied for fourth for wins (3rd in AL). Or sixth for appearances (3rd in AL). Or that they STILL have last over the Yankees. Or that at least 90% the assholes walking around New England with Yankees hats wouldn't have been caught dead with one before Jeter. Or that said Yankees fans are smug pricks that spent eighty-six years rubbing it in our face.

Maybe that's it.

\oh, and the America's Team shiat, filth? Ya. There's a reason they annually rank first in "most hated team." And BOTH my favorite NFL teams have last on yours, too, and one has head-to-head on you. By the way, how'd that game up in Seattle go last year?

If I read the whole thread before posting this I'd probably be late for class, so here goes:

Red Sox Nation does not translate to "the entire United States are Red Sox fans."

It just refers to a group of people who are all Red Sox fans. Just like the "Cherokee nation" means Cherokee Indians and their descendants. A nation is simply just a group of people with a common heritage.

America's Team is an entirely different animal.

Yep, this is another reason the Sox are far worse than the Yankees. As has been said by many people, there are millions of Nyers who don't care at all about the Yankees. Tons of NYers don't follow sports at all, of those that do plenty don't follow baseball, and even of NYC baseball fans obviously a lot are Mets.

Boston is different. Everyone in Boston has to be a Sox fan. Even people who don't care about sports or baseball and have never watched a full Red Sox game in their entire life will talk about how the Yankees suck if the name is brought up. I know lots of people like this and I've never even lived in Boston. Boston kids will travel to DC or Philly or NYC and still rant about how great the Sox are, despite not being able to name more than 2 or 3 current players.

You know, I hate the Raiders as much as any red and gold blooded Chiefs fan, but I'm not sure the Raiders fans deserve the bum rap. The halloween costumes on TV and the ridiculous "Raider Nation" stuff are irritating, but the time I was at an Oakland game (and the testimony of other people I know who've been to games) was totally different. They had a pretty laid back and polite crowd, for the most part. More so than my fellow Chiefs fans, who are pretty rabid at the tailgating, and prone to cuss out opposing fans who show up at the stadium.

Thing is, TV cameras love the black hole, and commentators focus on the halloween stuff, and that influences Raiders ROAD fans, the "Raider Nation" (which is pretty small now, of course) to try to live up to it. So I guess, again, national bandwagons have a price.

/well, bandwagon might be an exaggeration anymore.

Not defending anything in that video, but you'd have gotten a lot worse from Red Sox fans (or Philly fans or Chelsea fans or any of the other horrible fan bases).

What I'm saying is that if you go to a bar in a neutral city like DC with a Red Sox hat no yankee fan is gonna bug you. Wear a Yanks hat and you will get "Yankees suck!" chants all night from a bunch of annoying kids who think they are from Ireland because their second cousin studied abroad in Dublin.

All I'm saying here is that provoking rival fans in their own stadium is always a risky move.

Getting shouted at during a Yankees game at Yankees stadium might be kind of annoying, but getting yelled at the corner coffee shop or during a concert by idiot Red Sox fans when there isn't a game going on in sight is much more annoying.

When it comes to Red Sox/Yankees fans, I think I'm a bit more annoyed by the former. Probably just the whole 2004 and bandwagon thing. It was pitiful to suddenly see people wearing Boston hats here in the Midwest. Hell, I could understand seeing Cubbies hats in St. Louis & Springfield, MO, but Red Sox?

The term "Cardinal Nation" is quite frequently used here in St. Louis, as well. I'm guessing it has something to do with the loyalty of Redbirds fans, and that we're often recognized as the best (most knowledgeable? most loyal? i dunno...) fans in baseball. It also stems from the fact that, years ago, pre-expansion, KMOX and its massive signal generated many loyal fans to the south and west of St. Louis. On clear evenings, you can pick up ol' AM 1120 in Denver, and sometimes beyond. And most of our fans aren't tools who suddenly started cheering for El Birdos last October.

Oh, and for all you pro-Sox douches out there: I saw your damn team end its farking curse live and in person at Old Busch. The movie Fever Pitch? Totally teh ghey. Oh, and how you like J.D. Drew now?

Uh,

a) It is quite clear that the dude was deliberately trying to provoke them and indeed wanted a reaction. I'm sure he was carrying a sign with some famous red sox wit on it like "A-Rod and Jeter are homos" while carrying his camera and descending into the most famously rapid-yankees fan part of the stadium.

color me unimpressed with all involved

b) again, as I made quite clear, I was talking about in neutral situations unrelated to baseball. How fans react during a game at a stadium is one thing. As long as their is no violence, I don't really care. But fans bugging you on the streets with no baseball game in sight is another thing.

Seriously. Someone telling me I'm not a fan unless I pay to sign up for some stupid Red Sox Nation membership card?! Red Sox Nation voting for a President? WTF???

I enjoy baseball and I live in Boston, hence being a Red Sox fan. I'm also a Bruins fan (yes, I usually try not to admit to it and I'll need to see a therapist about it soon).

Back to the Sox though. I understand the passion and I understand the media driving the Red Sox in this town. Only in Boston could you have the local Football team in the Superbowl, yet in January the baseball team are still getting the sports headlines. I think there are your typical fair weather fans here in Boston, and the yuppie bastards who make it impossible for me to even get to a real game anymore, but it is the fans on the road that are the real problem. Half of them couldn't name the starting line up, have probably never been to Fenway and probably don't know who Johnny Pesky is or that Joe Dimaggio had a brother. Fark me.

Kinda of funny that ESPN is trying to call out the very thing they created. There are just as many educated, passionate baseball fans on the west coast but alas we do not get the national coverage because old blowhards like Gammons, and the rest of ESPN's bristol staff is asleep by the time our games start. Someone mentioned that the reason the Red Sox get so much attention is because they are in the same league as the Yankees. I agree one hundred and ten percent. The Yankees do deserve the attention they get because of their many championships and this is coming from a Dodgers fan, but the one thing I do not understand is how a team like the Dodgers, who has one of the top attendances year after year more world series than the Red Sox, and more seats than Fenway Park can't compete for the same players the Red Sox get, or spend like the Red Sox. I am sick and tired of the Red Sox Nation false sense of entitlement, it is one of the biggest travesties of modern day spectator sports.
