I'm sure a lot of people are talking to their kids about joining the military. They're probably saying the same thing they say when they talk to their kids about drugs: "Just say no!".

I thought about the Army. Dad said "Son, you're farking high."

2007-07-30 1:08:44 PM
My Dad pushed me a bit to join up for the "free" college tuition.

Today he says "Oh my God thank you for not listening to me."

man, those recruiters were aggressive when I graduated HS, granted that was 15 yrs ago, but I assume they still are.

There was a time when I would have encouraged my kids to serve but now I'll let them live in my basement until they're 50 if I have to.

To be fair it also comes with a commemorative American flag.

For this war they could at least say "We no longer kill you off thousands in a single day"

Glad to see you're willing to sign away your moral judgment on who to kill. As A. Whitney Brown said, choosing who to kill is a deeply personal decision. It shouldn't be signed away, but kept between a man and the voices in his head.

I joined up. i don't mind dying. i could die at any time anywher. i want to at least be doing something that will make a difference. at if it won't make a difference, i still enjoy it. i don't care about the money. its not the reason i joined.

For a long time I thought about joining the National Guard, but the way they are being abused and made to play international policeman pretty much dashed that dream against the rocks of "no way in hell".

I did JROTC in high school and the recruiters really wanted me to join. When I told my parents about it all; we all mutually agreed that I had a brighter future than that and I went straight to college to make something of myself.

Today I am in the first year of my surgery residency. Thank God I had wise parents.

What an outrage!

I was in ROTC in high school, I was in delayed entry for 3 years, December 14th was the day I got on the plane to go to boot camp.

December 11th I called my recruiter and told him I wasn't going.

Never heard from him again. Very pushy.

I graduated 2 years ago, and was seriously debating joining up as an engineer. Friend doing the same thing came home in a bag and made me thoughtfully reconsider. (read: scared the living shiat out of me) My father who had volunteered for the marines in 1967 would have supported any decision I made. Now he's damned glad I went to college in stead for even he is saying the motivation for this war is 10x worse than vietnam ever was.

If you want to join the military, go Navy.

Three meals a day, roof over your own bed, hot showers, soap on a rope, you'll have it made.

Did you/would you want him to lose his life for nothing?

I have a son. If he wants to serve I won't stop him except it'll be the USCG.

Having read TFA, I don't know what the guy's point is. Most of us have already seen the ads and can tell they're targeting parents, so the article doesn't even give us insight into the ad campaign.

The least informative thing I read today.

Durindal . . . do you really enjoy having your life on such a regimented schedule? Really? I mean, I've got 0311 buddies, and even THEY don't enjoy it. They were gungho when they joined, but they all got back from Iraq and removed those Eagle Globe and Anchor stickers from their cars.

Kid, you could have been an organ donor thinking that way.

If you want to make a difference, live, have kids, be a great dad, be kind to everybody because everyone is having a hard time.

Anyone I've known who's been in the shiat, had adamently discouraged me from going. Kind of a powerful motivator. I was often told that you'll have more of a link to the first human you kill than to anyone you marry.

protect the country from what, exactly? rational thought and discourse? maybe science? please don't say anything like the al qaida boogeymen. their most full-scale invasion so far was barely a busload of brown dudes. somehow, i don't find that very threatening.

You wouldn't believe!

My friend wanted to join the Air Force after the recruiter told her all these great jobs should could have. She, however, has allergies to just about everything(grass, pets, chocolate, dairy, all sorts of meds including Penicillin and iodine, etc), as well as a history of bi-polar disorder and anemia. The recruiter told her not to tell anybody else and she was accepted into the AF without anybody knowing anything about her true medical history.

They'll do whatever's needed to get the numbers up and get their bonus.

Oh, and after boot camp, they told her she couldn't get ANY of the jobs the recruiter "promised" she would get.

Thanks. I'm very proud to have gotten through medical school. The attrition rate to get into med school is ridiculous. Much harder than passing basic training (I still talk quite a bit to old JROTC friends from high school who enlisted).

When I am able to practice though, I will work on veterans who have been disfigured or maimed for free. Since I'm not in the military, it's the least I can do. They deserve some real health care.

Possibility to be a hero, risk death and danger, gain valuable skills for the job market, while also getting to go to college for free and gaining educational experience that will provide for a true career without having to have the luxury of well-off parents

vs.

Graduate high school, work at the body shop. Get girlfriend pregnant. Drink.

Fark anyone who says the ROTC isn't a good thing.

I think word is getting out that the Free College Tuition might cover a two year Tech school in Middle-of-no-where if you can manage to find and submit the several thousand or so required forms to the various proper officials, sacrifice a goat, and hope that, having submitted and made the proper sacrifices, the officials actually decide to review any of the paperwork filling up their desks.
