Bah! Wake me up when Bush and his Party start scapegoating religious minorities, social democrats, trade unions, homosexuals, civil rights groups... oh, wait.

According to the muslims the news tells me about, the holocaust didn't happen... so that means in this comparison, hitler wasn't that bad of a guy... right? So neither is Bush?

I'll shut up now.

Also, Trollmitter, he doesn't actually compare the two men, just the similarities between 2 "State emergencies" and their effect on each respective government.

/But you already knew that.

I intensely dislike the Bush/Hitler comparisons-- I think it sometimes demonstrates an ignorance of history, politics, society, and culture.

But the WTC/Reichstag comparisons are valid-- all statist governments capitalize upon terrorism and exploit it towards authoritarian ends. The State desperately needs terrorist violence to justify its ever-increasing interference into people's lives and terrorists happily corroborate with them, since terrorists need a repressive State to justify the ever-increasing intensity of their violence. The textbook example of this is what went down in Italy in the mid-1970s.

The Bush-Cheney regime didn't plan and execute the attacks on 9/11; they did, however, take full advatange of the chaos and fear that followed for their own benefit.

That said, Ellison is a [DUMBASS] because he's a professional pandering politician, not because he sees parallels in the way that rulers have authoritarian responses to civil crises. Subby was right but for all the wrong reasons.

I can remember just a few months back when my own useless, wingnut, Bush-licking, shiat-for-brains "Representative," Virgil Goode (VA-5 and, needless to say, R), was throwing a fit because Ellison had the nerve to take his oath of office on a Qur'an rather than a Bible, the insinuation being that he was a stalking-horse for Al-Qa'ida or something. This article just verifies even further what a farking bigot douchebag No-Goode is.

What is the point of learning from history if we are ridiculed to point out how a pattern of events in the past that had terrible consequences occurs again in the present? Now, Bush is not similar to Hitler in his worst ways, but todays american government has taken many steps and methods used by the authoritarian governments of the past...nothing so extreme as back then, obviously, but similar nontheless.

Personally I'm glad that people are shouting "Hitler! Hitler!" at Bush and other world leaders. It shows we haven't forgotten what can result from bad governments, and it helps to prevent those terrible things from happening again.

2007-07-16 4:54:36 PM
Bush didn't attack America to seize power, Bush co-opted an attack on America to seize power. He saw an opportunity to get scared Americans to waive their rights and give up some freedom so he could do as he pleased. He then used that power to invade Iraq using lies to gain public support for his war and he abused his power to attack critics and conceal his misdeeds from congress and the public.

Bush is a criminal and a terrible national disgrace. Hitler was a monster orders of magnitude worse than Bush. That's a bad, bad analogy Keith.

Confirmed proof that this congressman hasn't an original thought in his brain - a civilization full of historical bad guys to compare Shrub to and the best he can come up with is Adolf Hilter?

Anytime anyone makes a Hitler comparison you can pretty much bet that they really don't have a valid argument and they are simply looking to get a reaction.

It shows a misunderstanding for history to compare a person who took MILLIONS of Jews and killed them with a direct order. Not in war just because he didn't like them. Anyone compaing Bush to Hitler is making what Hitler did okay.

No comparison is perfect. I've not read in this article, or anywhere, that Keith Ellison is saying that Bush is exactly like Hitler. I shouldn't even have to point this out. You can compare specific actions of people (like the whole Reichstags shenanigans) without needing to say that they are EXACTLY THE SAME. Had bush orchestrated the 9/11 attacks as a means to grab political power, Ellison's analogy would be quite correct. I don't know that to be true or not, but Ellison is entitled to his opinion.

Your comments show a clear inability to make anything more than the broadest kinds of distinctions, when fine distinctions are what is required to have even a passing understanding of the argument that Ellison is trying to make.

He didn't do that, but you continue trolling and spreading lies.

Saying that the Fires and The WTC bombings had similar effects on government is not an inaccurate statement, both consolidated power in the executive.

FTFAVice-President Dick Cheney's stance of refusing to answer some questions from Congress was "the very definition of totalitarianism, authoritarianism and dictatorship", he added.

Executive branch resisting the politically motivated fishing expeditions by the legislative branch = totalitarianism

If they couldn't be called on it, or investigated - THEN it would be something to worry about.

To compare anyone to hitler is saying everything about Hitler not just the nice fun parts like you keep pretending he meant.

This is a frustrating time for me:

1) The libs refer to W. as "Hitler".

2) I think W. is way too liberal....expanding government, kissing up to illegals, etc.

Except, all Ellison talked about was the Reichstag fire and the WTC attack, and their respective effects on the powers asserted by the respective governments - the "nice fun parts," as you put it. Ellison did not compare Bush to Hitler, did not refer to "everything about Hitler," and in fact did not use Hitler's name.

Mr Ellison also raised eyebrows by telling his audience: "You'll always find this Muslim standing up for your right to be atheists all you want."

I find this very hard to believe. Either Ellison is lying or he's not a very good Muslim.
