To David Pogue's credit, he does a good job on his show It's All Geek to Me.

He's right. One thing I've learned in my little dealings with them is that the media is easily bribed by free swag.

Yeah, because no other company ever sends their product out to critics to be evaluated. Only the evil Apple. At least, that's what all 15-year-old Apple-haters think, squatting in their mom's basement.

That doesn't make it news. It doesn't mean it has a place in a paper that claims to be THE paper of record.

It belongs on cnet

Since some folks seem to be confused, it's worth noting that the article isn't criticizing the review, the iphone, or even Apple. The whole point is that the NYT - the paper with the longest history of quality journalism in America - is playing fast and loose with the standards of journalism ethics, all for the sake of building its web presence.

If you love apple, or the iphone, relax already. This isn't about you, your computer, or your phone.

The NY Times, and any reputable media outlet, really, forbids the reviewer from keeping the device. They're supposed to send it back to the company or donate it to a charity. Books are often donated to local libraries.

That's not to say that people don't violate their company's ethics code.

Both videos are a spoof of all the hype. It was probably the biggest build up to any product release in the history of America. That is why both videos are like that, the first showing everyone wanting the phone because they don't know what it has. Then when he tells them everything it lacks at the end the majority of the people leave. The second was about the hype and a total joke.

All of the things going on currently and this is what is in the news. Pretty pathetic.

That's not fair, yu can't use actual material from the Times on fark, how are we supposed to insult things they actually print.

Reviews in papers, any papers, are just opinion, not journalism per se. There is very little factual about liking or disliking a product, it's all subjective to what the reviewer thinks is important in the product he's looking at. Further, you can write these things any way you please, including all the bells and whistles you want, or no-frills as you like as a writer, the only fault you can really make is to invent details that don't exist. I approach all reviews with the same method I approach Op-ed's, dear abby-style columns and other stuff you find sandwiched into newspapers: With a healthy sense of skepticism.

I have no idea why this article or subby has it in for the NYT, opinion columns are found in every paper on the planet, and tech reviewers tend to be gushy early-adopter technogeeks everywhere you look.

/waiting for credible word-of-mouth on iphone to kick in.

I can't see how anyone is really complaining. The job of a reviewer is to inform people about the product based on an experienced understanding of similiar products and some sort of insight into the needs of the potential consumers.

Has David Pogue done that? Certainly, in his articles for the NYT. The videos are basically the same thing, just with a little injection of teh funnay! While he does get just a little swept away by the excitement of the release, he is never swept away by the hype, and remains a trustworthy reviewer.

I thought the "My Way" vid was great. This other columnist needs to cheer the fark up.

So, wait...the reporter for Yahoo is ripping on the NY Times for being "unprofessional" while at the same time trying to use HTML tags in the page title?

I know, not the same issue, but for ME it decreases the credibility of the Yahoo news story. How can I take a website seriously if they don't know the basics of HTML tagging?

SRSLY

NYT didn't get a free phone, David P did. Because that's how he rolls. He probably made that whole video on his *free* Mac, too. And he will probably include a 'how-to' in his next Mac book, about how he made it. Or maybe in his next iPhone book.
