Oh no. Dozens of people will die! Everyone's gonna stink!

Oh wait--this is Arizona, not France. Never mind.

MyNameIsNotMervGriffin: Oh wait--this is Arizona, not France. Never mind.

Actually, a power outage in Phoenix in the summer is a lot like a heating oil shortage in Chicago in the winter: old folks, sick people, homeless, etc are in danger of dying from the heat. A few folks die every year as it is. When the A/C runs out, the number goes up.

So it's a little more serious than "people will get sweaty".

However, if it was happening in New York, we'd have heard about it mostly because there are more people in NY than PHX. More national news agencies, too. So that makes sense.

Oh, forgot to add: A 30 minute outage isn't all that dangerous.

Phoenix is a decent place, but every single thing about the area screams "God/Allah/fate did NOT want many humans to live here"

I mean, the natives were hardcore, but not millions of retirees. Pretty tenuous existence...3-days without power and the deaths would be in the tens of thousands.

2007-06-29 3:39:00 PM
Nice try, but New York can't hear you over the sound of how awesome it is.

Power was out in NY 2 days ago for 48 minutes and they ran it on the news for 2 hours. They were still talking about it on yesterday's news, too. Looks like Con Ed is going for the FAIL again this year.

Hey Subby... as quoted from the Article

A computer glitch is being blamed for a power outage Thursday morning that affected between 80,000 and 100,000 Salt River Project customers in the Valley.

Wow, cause 80,000 is alot like 10,000,000

/And a whole 1/2 hour. wow, what did the rednecks and old people in Phoenix do for the interminable amount of time?
//Doosh!

How will all the Phoenixians get home without their massive underground electric mass transit system?

2007-06-29 3:45:18 PM
But it's not 110 in New York.

Nor is New York in the middle of a farking desert.

It's easy to spot the people in this thread who have read Drew's book and those who have not.

Yeah why are NYers more aware of Utah and KC than of SF or Houston.

2007-06-29 3:46:08 PM

We had a 2 hour blackout in a ritzy neighborhood in NYC earlier this week.

I saw a single posting on Fark.

Are you tired of hearing about it already?

Yeah why are NYers more aware of Utah and KC than of SF or Houston.

I assume they would know of Utah because of the skiing. You assume SF would be on there as well. Unless you're going for business, there's no reason to go to Houston or KC. Actually, there's no good reason to go to most cities.

maudibjr: This is why you don't live in a desert, collective dumbasses.

Right. But it's okay to live in Maine in the winter, or Chicago, or Michigan...

Dumbass.

Mr. Anon: It's called a culling the heard, and it should happen every few weeks in florida/arizona.

"A culling the heard"? What does hearing have to do with it?

New York what?

2007-06-29 3:49:37 PM
Heh, so all the Arizonans out there should settle, what, the Great Plains? Let's leave Arizona a completely empty state, devoid of human settlement.

LessO2: Nor is New York in the middle of a farking desert.

Reminds me of Sam Kinison....

"LIVE WHERE THE FOOD IS! YOU LIVE IN A DESERT! YOU LIVE IN A FARKING DESERT! NOTHING GROWS OUT HERE! NOTHING'S GONNA GROW OUT HERE! YOU SEE THIS? HUH? THIS IS SAND. KNOW WHAT IT'S GONNA BE A HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW? IT'S GONNA BE SAND! YOU LIVE IN A FARKING DESERT! GET YOUR STUFF, GET YOUR SHIAT, WE'LL MAKE ONE TRIP, WE'LL TAKE YOU TO WHERE THE FOOD IS! WE HAVE DESERTS IN AMERICA -- WE JUST DON'T LIVE IN THEM, ASSH01ES!"

wee: Actually, a power outage in Phoenix in the summer is a lot like a heating oil shortage in Chicago in the winter: old folks, sick people, homeless, etc are in danger of dying from the heat.

Ummm, how are the homeless going to be affected if there's no electricity and/or a/c? Wouldn't being homeless already kinda sorta mean you ain't got no?

2007-06-29 3:50:12 PM
It should be illegal to have that many people live in the desert.

When I left all they played was gangsta rap.

2007-06-29 3:50:33 PM
Oh noes, we built our city in the middle of the desert, not expecting it to get hot... we r so much better than those self-centered New Yorkers... hay, you gots some ice to send us New York idiots? We're dying here.
