Tow it and sell it for scrap. This will prevent her from parking at a meter, and will allow paying people to park there. Sometimes it's so easy...

damn in my town a parking ticket is $15.... it would take decades to run up a $28,000 tab.

It's awesome that they list those people, and even give the place of employment for the first place winner(?).

On a slightly related topic, while at the MVA (we call the DMV that here in Maryland for some reason) about a month ago, I in front of a woman trying to renew her registraion but was unable to because she had $1400 in unpaid tickets. I thought that was a lot, especially for Montgomery County, where there really aren't a whole heckuva lot a spots to get ticketed. I mean, you've really gotta search those places out.

In New York State, you have to re-register your car every few years.
If you have any outstanding tickets or liens, they won't let you re-register.

If you're caught driving an unregistered motor vehicle, they just tow it away on the spot, whether it's worth anything, or not.

Huh? There are about fourteen brazillion metered parking spots on the streets and garages of downtown Silver Spring, and every single one of them has an Asian woman or old guy in a meter maid outfit ready to spring out of a secret compartment the moment your time expires. Those damn tickets cost $35 a pop.

tickets get more expensive as time goes on. So it's unlikely the total number of initial fines she was levied is $27k, but as they sit unpaid there's usually a set rate at which the fine increases.

Well that's cool! I look out my office window and see 370 right now. Drop me a line sometime, we'll get beer.

And, I retract my former statement. Just because I've never gotten a parking ticket and hardly know where a lot of meters are doesn't mean they're not out there. But there's also tons of garages, pay lots, that sort of thing. I've never seen why anyone would end up with a ticket. *shrug* Oh well.

Though I've never driven anything totally worthless like her car, there are many bonuses to driving a 'beater'.

1) Never caring what type of piece of shiat is parked next to you
2) Accidentally clipping those BMWs and Mercedes parked illegally in parking lots and continuing to drive along like nothing happened (like when they park in the driving lanes b/c all the spots are full)
3) You begin to enjoy when people turn in front of you or cut you off
4) When in slow traffic, you can drive right into other people's lanes and they'll back off immediately

I guess I'm probably a bastard driver for driving a 2000 Taurus and not giving a shiat what happens to it, but if you wanna drive a $50k liability on a road full of morons, that's your problem. The last place I'd drive a vehicle I car about is on a public road.

2007-06-28 12:30:27 PM
I think the city should give her an award. I've thrown away the last 50 parking tickets (which is all of them, driving rentals) I ever got. Wouldn't pay a parking fine.

In Kentucky (and I presume everywhere else, but I've never lived anywhere else) you have to pay taxes on it every year. Why not just put a lien on the tax bill, and when she doesn't pay it, repo her car?

I is so smart.

2007-06-28 12:37:01 PM
I always love when private lots try to give you parking tickets for the most trivial shiat.

Those get tossed immediately. One incident involved me parking across two spots...in an EMPTY lot, i was literally the only car. Got a ticket...

I dropped the ticket off at the security desk with a note saying this will never be paid.

2007-06-28 12:39:01 PM
(which is all of them, driving rentals)

The ticket will get traced back to the rental agency, and the rental agency will track it to you. This has happened to me twice, one of them in Canada. They find you.

Captain_Cool: I guess I'm probably a bastard driver for driving a 2000 Taurus and not giving a shiat what happens to it,

That, in and of itself, is no reason for any sort of invective.
But this:
4) When in slow traffic, you can drive right into other people's lanes and they'll back off immediately

..is cause for a metric assload of schadenfreude when some road-raging idiot decides to something like execute your snooty-looking dog by tossing into moving traffic or simply whip out a handgun and shoot you.
It'd certainly make my day, anyway.

but if you wanna drive a $50k liability on a road full of morons, that's your problem.

You're one of the many reasons that automobile tort reform is a pipe dream. That doesn't make you a "bastard driver" so much as a "stupid mouth-breathing dumbass". KTHXBYE!

2007-06-28 12:58:11 PM
Here, all you have to do is say your plate was stolen and the DMV gives you a new one. A buddy of mine ran up huge parking fines and has done this 5 times.

Not all states have auto tax, New York and Washington State come to mind.

Umm.. yeah, Washington state does.

"Registration fees" by any other name are still a form of "taxes". Washington drivers have to renew their tags just like everybody else in Cascadia. Additionally, every 7 years in WA you MUST get new plates, and the state charges you for that privilege as well (like your plate number? They'll charge you a "plate retention fee" as well).

Lastly, unless you live in a shiathole like Walla Walla you have a local option of .5% of depreciated value "tax" that has to be paid.

Washington: the only state that could collect $150 million in vehicle taxes to NOT build a transit system. You can keep it, I'll stay in Oregon, kthx. $150 for 4 year registration on a brand new VW New Beetle isn't gonna break my budget.

feedle: Washington: the only state that could collect $150 million in vehicle taxes to NOT build a transit system

Because there are too many dipsh*ts here (Tim Eyman comes to mind) who would rather spend that money on building new roads than putting that revenue to good use.

Around here they suspend your license for it. I had mine suspended because I was lazy and didn't pay a friggin 25 dollar alternate side of the street ticket in time. They send you one warning, and then suspend it. 100 bucks to get it re-instated after you pay the ticket as well.

They also put a warrant out for you so if you get caught driving or whatever, they can just drag you down to the station and make you pay it there. They have also been known to go door to door to get their money.

Nope. I drive a nicely-kept $6k (BlueBook value) liability, and somewhat irrelevant in any case when speaking in regards to some stooge wanting to play dodge-em cars.
Thanks for playing though!

In Canada you cannot have parking tickets. :(

I had some Quebec parking tickets which I ignored because 'fark Quebec'. I didn't live there. Quebec paid money to some computer system to get my address. They then mailed me notices that I had a ticket. Which I ignored. Eventually they convicted me of having a parking ticket on their own (nice how that works legally, they can write a ticket and convict you in court, without ever receiving an acknowledgement from you). Then they filed a bailiff 'writ of seizure' (which I ignored since I didn't live in Quebec) and suspended my 'right to drive in Quebec' (I find this one questionable, how can free movement in the country be suspended?).

However, at this point they stated in writing that the next step is an 'arrest warrant' (yup, for parking tickets).

Unfortunately, Ontario has an arrest warrant agreement with Quebec, so once that is done, Ontario will send you to Quebec to talk about your parking tickets.

So I had to pay my tickets. The end.

The other half of the story is, if you're an Ontario resident and forget to pay a ticket, they will fine you and attach it to your plate sticker, so when you renew you have to pay it, plus extra.

Never ever forget to pay a moving violation ticket, they will suspend your license to drive, and to re-activate it comes with a $200 processing fee. And if caught driving, they can seize car.

Vehicles are very very big money for Ontario. At the UofT campus on city meters, it is $6 to park for an hour. And you better believe they have that truck whizzing around constantly so they can issue $35 tickets a pop.

Contrast this to towns like Whitby where it's 50 cents to park for an hour at city lots. Now that is a fair and reasonable price.

PS. An amusing sidenote, one of my Quebec tickets, I drove off before the pig could place it on my windshield. So they mailed it to me via certified (green stripe) xpresspost and required me to sign for it before I could open the envelope. As I was expecting something else from them, I opened it. So, you got served biatch! The ticket says that it is placed on the windshield. But there was scribble over that and another spot. The agent said that the scribble indicates that it wasn't placed on the shield or whatever and that I am served in a different manner.

I'm sure if I was a lawyer I could have argued all that questionable shiat, but who has time for that.

DON'T PARK IN QUEBEC.

DON'T PARK IN TORONTO.

TOURISTS GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!

A normal everyday driver is just a hole in which you throw money. The average person does not buy a car as an investment. All it does is cost money. Yes they are a necessary cost for most of the country thanks to a terrible public transportation system. I cringe at people spending even $20,000 on a car, especially a new car, when in a few years it's value is half of that. Most people don't have the money to be buying the $40,000 cars that they end up buying, but instead of saving they have to have that hot new BMW. Nowadays you can get a used car with low miles that will run for at least 150,000 miles with little effort for well under $15,000. There is just no reason in my mind to spend all that money on a new car, especially when your chances of getting hit are very high.

/Like Captain_Cool said, the roads are full of bad drivers
//The system is not going to fix that
///I welcome our incompetent, road raging, lane changing overlords

So, are all parking violations subject to public scrutiny, or only those for whom the toll has passed some arbitrary number?

People should go to the restaurant where she works, sit in her section, and when it comes time to leave the tip leave a note instead that reads "I'll give you your tip as soon as you pay your parking fines."

Unless you are the proud owner a 1880's era steam car that is up for auction in Pebble Beach, most likely you car is a liability. Just because the Infinity commercials say that a car is an investment doesn't make it so.

If she can't afford a car, and can't afford 25 cents for the meter, what would make them think they can collect $28K?

Tow the car, she is too broke to buy another vehicle to replace it, you may have to write off the tickets but at least she won't keep racking up more of them!

Are you kidding me?! I live in Germantown and I racked up $910 in parking tickets in Bethesda. $20 per expired meter, tack on a $50 late fee for each one, that's only 12 tickets! The only way I got away with it was that it was on a car with out-of-state plates, which I never registered in Maryland. I sold it to a chick in Virginia. I also got married and changed my last name so if MVA or MoCoPoPo even tried to find me they never could.

Just sayin' it's not hard at all, and MoCoPoPo will boot you for 3 unpaid tickets over 90 days old!
