I figured this would get an "obvious" tag.

2007-06-05 11:51:06 AM
I don't know if that will work. Trouble is, sheep are very dim. Once they get an idea in their heads, there's no shifting it.

Well, the R's haven't really offered much more than empty rhetoric...

Just saying

Oh. Great.

Another Hillary/Obama thread.

Hence the "unlikely" tag.

I'm sure Jesus would have been all for making the wealthy wealthier (at everyone else's expense, ofc), raping/destroying the earth, WAR, and so on, so these good "Christians" will not stray!!!

Fundamentalist Democrats? Never heard of such a thing.

+1 for making me wonder how a story about churches could possibly involve (real) sheep, until I slapped my forehead five seconds later.

Jesus was a liberal jew!

What? He was.

Politicians (and a good deal of people) don't even understand what faith means.

To believe without reason? Bush has faith the war in Iraq is going well.

Any politician who mentions their "faith" immediately loses my vote.

I know what I posted can't be obscure....especially for ComicBookGuy.

Considering the leading Republican candidates right now are a Mormon and a guy with a trophy wife, it's not hard to see that the Christians might be just a little disillusioned with the party right now.

Seeing most liberals hate or think very poorly of religious people I don't see this happening. Case in point: headline calling them sheep.

Don't tell your pastor this, but liberals are religious, too. Chances are, most of them are Christians.

No, actually Jesus was all about loafing around. He was a carpenter by trade. All the freaking buildings around that scream, "George Washington slept here!" Not one single edifice stating, "Built by God." Not one. I think a building built by God should still be standing to this day. All the time you're doing good deeds, you're "doing God's work." Because he's loafing off yet again. Most of the time he getrs busy these days, it's just to cause some odd disaster or pestilence.

What would God drive? He'd just borrow everybody else's cars.

As for raping/ destroying, go back and reread the Old Testament. Plenty of that in there, sanctioned by the good old Hypocrite-in=-Chief himself.

Does it really matter what some carpenter's brat who became a preacher would be for or against?

Won't work. After all, we all know that Jesus was a republican.

To some people, yes. People who may have the same political opinions as yourself, and maybe even have more things in common with you, but are put off by a "holier than thou" attitude.

2007-06-05 12:25:52 PM
Three reasons this is a bad idea:

1. Politico-religionism is bad for religious freedom

2. The politico-religionists are fracturing already, without any confusing alternative dialogue from the Dems, who are characteristically clumsy with religious rhetoric.

3. A shift towards religious rhetoric will soften the contrast between the normal religious dialogue and that of the extreme right-wing religionist nutbags. And we need all the contrast we can get, so as to isolate the State-as-proxy-for-the-evangelical-church crowd.

.

Arnold T Pants - The problem with liberals is that they're too honest for their own good. They should learn from the republicans, and only call the sheep 'religious whackos' behind closed doors - like the Bush administration does.

Yes, because Christians would never refer to themselves as sheep or a flock.

HAMMERTOE

Most buildings of the time were either caves or built from mud or stone.

The roof structure and the door & jamb were the only parts that needed a carpenter.

And of course you'd need a couple benches and a table, and a coffin every now and then, although coffins and bone-boxes could be made of stone as well.

So, while there might be some structure whose roof was originally built by God, the roof structure would probably have been replaced a couple times by now.

You know, it is funny you should mention that, because I hung out with the sons and nephews of Haley Barbour during the eighties, when they were working the Reagan campaign, and they used to call it the "Crazy Christian Vote."

Everyone else called it the hate vote.

Christians like to be called sheep. Hence why the pastor refers to his church-goers as his 'flock'.

Any number of them hate the politico-religionist faction of the Republican party, some for wanting to legislate a narrow interpretation of scripture, others for endangering religious freedom.

It's not an irrational hatred of all things religious; it's a principled objection to bad ideas.

You must have never been to the Democratic Underground. It's not a principled objection. It rarely has anything to do with legislation. Its pure irrational hatred of all things Christian.

hell, one of the meanings of the word 'pastor' is....shepherd.

Hey, I wouldn't have a problem with religion if...

1. It was personal and not publicly promoted or mandated.

2. It wasn't used as an excuse to subvert science and rational education.

3. It didn't infringe on my ability to purchase various products on certain days of the week.

4. It didn't dictate that I am cursed to eternal hellfire because of something that supposedly happened 6000 years ago that I had NOTHING to do with.

5. It wasn't used as an excuse to oppress and control women and minorities, invade other nations and kill millions of people.

6. It doesn't tell me what I can and cannot do with my body or life that doesn't hurt anybody.

7. It made any rational sense at all; it had any consistent standard of moral behavior, and its followers demonstrated by example, that their religious philosophy makes the world a better place.

So far... 0 for 7.

UberDave: I don't know if that will work. Trouble is, sheep are very dim. Once they get an idea in their heads, there's no shifting it.

The reason it won't work is because the candidates involved don't really understand the religious underpinnings of red staters. They're used to more liberal East Coast churches and think if they co-opt the language a bit they'll snap up a bunch of voters by pretending to pander to them.

The sheep involved might be stupid but they ain't THAT stupid.

MyNameIsNotMervGriffin: co-opt the language a bit they'll snap up a bunch of voters by pretending to pander to them.

well...it obviously works. can't really blame them for the effort when that is essentially the definition of a political campaign, no matter what audience is being courted.

2007-06-05 3:33:55 PM
heap: well...it obviously works.

Not with the red-state voters. There's an obvious difference between someone trying to parrot the language and toss a bit of faith rhetoric into their speeches (Hillary) and someone who really means it (Bush).

Say what you will about Bush, but when he talks about faith and religion you know he means it. When Hillary or Edwards try to work it into their speeches they sound about as phony as Larry King would if he started using Snoop Dogg slangizzle.

2007-06-05 3:39:11 PM
Not with the red-state voters.

well...again, if anyone is under the impression that they are going to pull the entire evangelical vote, they're deluded. i don't think that is in any way the intent, however.

evangelicals (which bush does connect much better with) aren't the target here, i don't think. depending on where you look, the country is 75-85% christian - even with in red states, there are folks that can be swayed by the exact same pandering, but from a different direction. there is a subsection of the country that religion in politics is synonymous with republican...i don't really think that's the target audience here.

There is a wide gulf between hatred and a mere disregard for circular logic. If you say Dems are motivated by dislike of religion because you say so, that's plainly circular logic. If all you can offer in the way of argument is slogans given to you by the Liberal Bashing Industry, the rest of us may most certainly point out that's a stupid way to live without hating you.
