The rewards of tolerance are heresy and betrayal.

2007-06-04 2:17:56 PM
So, suicide bombing is still okay, right?

2007-06-04 2:19:31 PM
Most religions seem pretty silly, but this is just crazy. Next step: ban all books that aren't The Bible/Koran/Whatever.

Critical thinking and reason must be non-Islamic

2007-06-04 2:26:54 PM
The MCB says special treatment and opt-outs are necessary because otherwise Muslim pupils will feel excluded from school activities and lessons.

Right. But screw that Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus and others...we don't care if they feel excluded.

Seriously, WTF?

This is the sort of shiat that needs to be biatch-slapped down hard.

2007-06-04 2:45:05 PM
Sounds like the Muslims parents are suddenly realizing that their kids are being exposed to other cultures and are figuring out that fundamentalism sucks. Sorta like evangelical parents here in the US.

2007-06-04 2:45:21 PM
So I guess that means uncontrolled mass immigration is good right?

2007-06-04 2:46:49 PM
And so it begins.

2007-06-04 2:50:30 PM
No, it's not a joke. It's what all of the 'Everyone is equal' idiots are missing. These people are smart enough to sneak their way in, then they want to go so far overboard it should make you puke.

I'm sure some idiot will try equating it to some moron wanting to teach ID in schools, so everyone can feel all better.

This is what modern Middle-Eastern/European (note: not Indonesian or American) Islam is, folks.

2007-06-04 2:50:57 PM
While the report is crap it isn't as bad as the subby suggests...

In terms of the op... They don't want parent's night gone, only limited during their holy month, the same with vaccinations. They want swimming lessons banned during this month also.

Unless I missed it, playground games aren't mentioned. Only that contact sports and fieldtrips should be single gender.

The report is stupid on its own... No need to lie to make it worse than it is.

2007-06-04 2:52:55 PM
Though to be fair, I tend to find blue laws in American to be along the lines of this folderol. I hope all of you who instinctively react negatively against this will allow me to go ahead and purchase alcohol on Sundays, since I'm not part of your religion either. :P

2007-06-04 2:55:38 PM
Thanks, Ryan2065. You win the critical thought cookie.

Now, can some mainstream Muslims point and laugh at the MCB and say 'that's not what Islam is about, sillyheads'?

2007-06-04 2:57:50 PM
Ryan2065: Unless I missed it, playground games aren't mentioned

FTFA:

"Demands for a ban on 'un-Islamic' activities in schools will be set out by the Muslim Council of Britain today. Targets include playground games, swimming lessons, school plays, parents' evenings and even vaccinations."

The report is stupid on its own... No need to lie to make it worse than it is.

Well, I didn't have room to squeeze the next sentence, which is even scarier, into the headline:

"And the calls for all children to be taught in Taliban-style conditions will be launched with the help of a senior Government education adviser."

Taliban-style conditions? Oh goody.

2007-06-04 2:58:01 PM
stealthd Now, can some mainstream Muslims point and laugh at the MCB and say 'that's not what Islam is about, sillyheads'?

Funny you should mention that =)

FTA: But other Muslim groups criticised the report. Dr Ghayasuddin Siddiqui of the Muslim Parliament of Great Britain said: "There has been no discussion on these issues in the Muslim community. "

And the Sufi Muslim Council - which claims to represent far more British Muslims than the MCB - said the report misunderstood Ramadan.

It added: "This is not what Islam or Ramadan is about. Ramadan is about training yourself while carrying on with everyday life. "

2007-06-04 3:00:24 PM
MyNameIsNotMervGriffin: Well, I didn't have room to squeeze the next sentence

Sorry, forgot to mention: Yes, I'm the subby. No, I did not lie in the headline; I just shortened the first two sentences of the actual article. If the article doesn't accurately represent the actual report, I suggest you read this book (pops).

2007-06-04 3:00:24 PM
The Muslim community in Europe/Middle-East, by virtue of its actions, deserves the same amount of belief put into the value of its words as the Bush Administration does. They are two sides of the same type of worldview.

2007-06-04 3:01:57 PM
MyNameIsNotMervGriffin

If you actually read the article rather than relying on the biased first paragraph you will see a different story.

You can see this from the fact that the first paragraph says it wants a ban on parents evenings and vaccinations yet in the article when citing the report it says...

It also wants to limit certain activities during Ramadan. They include science lessons dealing with sex, parents' evenings, exams and immunisation programmes.

Limiting the activities in 1 month of the year is slightly different than banning them.

Are you really arguing that's better? I don't want to accuse you of doing so, but would you be as "clarifying" if I were saying things such as, "Homosexuals should not be allowed to be with each other in July. Women should not leave the home in July. Blood transfusions should be illegal in July."?

Does that somehow make it OK?

Ryan2065: Limiting the activities in 1 month of the year is slightly different than banning them.

Argue with the guy who wrote the article, dude. Not my fault his own lede doesn't match the rest of his article.

I'm gonna publish an article under the headline "Bush Dead." The first sentence will read "President Bush was assassinated today in Washington."

Down in the 8th or 9th paragraph, I'll get around to mention that someone just TRIED to shoot him but the Secret Service caught him two days ahead of time.

Hey, lookit me! I's a jernulist!

To me limiting certain activities in 1 month of the year is slightly better than banning them all together... It doesn't make it ok, but might as well give the right facts in your argument so you don't look like an idiot later.

2007-06-04 3:10:21 PM
See, if they just killed all the muslims they wouldn't have this problem.

2007-06-04 3:11:21 PM
Ryan2065

Ok, we just fundamentally disagree, then. I think, say, telling you you don't have freedom of speech during July is just as bad as telling you that you don't have any freedom of speech at all.

In fact, I find allowing the former to be one of the preconditions for the institutions of the latter in a political system.

Either way, you sound as if you're sympathizing far more than you are disapproving of such garbage. Perhaps why a few people are taking issue with you.

2007-06-04 3:13:30 PM
Dudemanbro

Not that specific problem, but it wouldn't eliminate the intrinsic need groups of people always seem to have to define what is morally right or wrong for everyone else on earth.

Plus, while I'm assuming you're probably being sarcastic, annihilation of any culture is pretty much one of the more evil and unfair actions another culture could take, no matter how bad.

A quick google search gives the BBC's take on this garbage article:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/6391271.stm

Muslims demand "Taleban-style" conditions in our schools.

That was the Daily Express' version of new guidelines for schools from the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB).

In fact, there was no reference that I could find to the Taleban anywhere in the report. Such are the dangers of polarising this debate by inflated language.

Then there is this:
He said: "Schools are trying to create societies within their walls which are tolerant and celebratory.

"I just worry that the list of demands - if that is what it is - may be too much and will simply create a backlash."

I suspect the MCB did not consider this list of special considerations as "demands". But the guidance document does contain a very high count of the word "should".

It seems the report was meant as a guidance report for new school policies but since they used the word "should" it was taken, by some, as a list of demands.

2007-06-04 3:20:30 PM
Ryan2065

*laughs* "Should makes it all better."

I should rape of you of your rights.

Play the word game, Mate.

//Just remember, I said should, therefore it's OK.

Cathaleon

Sigh... A list of suggested policy reforms for the schools is a little different than a list of demands to ban lots of activities at school.

But go ahead... take the Daily Express' version over the BBC's version. Its not like the Daily Express contradicts itself in its own article... Oh wait.

2007-06-04 3:26:38 PM
Ryan2065

No, it really isn't. A list of suggest school policy reforms containing those items is sick. If Christians did it here, you'd throw a hissy fit (as would I, btw).

I ready both "versions" before I began commenting and found both equally appalling.

2007-06-04 3:31:08 PM
Cathaleon

I don't know... Some of the suggestions were not appalling... Like the one suggesting boys and girls have separate changing rooms so boys didn't have to change in the classrooms.

PANIC

fark this shiat. Just as schools shouldn't force religion on students, religions shouldn't be forced on schools.

I'm Jewish. During Passover, the school didn't switch to an all-matzoh menu. They served bread. Extremist Orthodox Jews might find that offensive, but I don't. I brought in my own matzoh and didn't eat the bread.

Grant religious dispensation towards religious students of any stripe. Let them fast in daylight during Ramadan, find alternatives to swimming and other gym classes, and maybe even take make-up tests if some of the classes during Ramadan are offensive during that month. But don't fark with the entire school.

Also, the writer of this article should be arrested for assault on the Queen's English with a deadly word processor.

Mighty_Dog: 'All religion is just as bad' in 3... 2... 1...

Religion is not the problem. Fanatacism is. Fundamentalism is.

Faith can be a wonderful thing. But if you become a deranged, single-minded zealot fixated on the most esoteric, tribalist traditions while ignoring the greater history and context of the source of your faith, you're probably going to start acting like a coont.

Moderate Muslims almost never get heard in the news, just like moderate Christians never get heard, just like moderate Jews never get heard. It's always the Wahabbis, the Westboro Baptists, the Orthodox zionists who get the column inches. Quiet prayers may be heard by the gods, but they're seldom heard by the people.

The ACLU would be against any government funded religious activities.

Assimilate or get out because you don't belong in a place like England. If you want to live in a place with these kind of rules don't immigrate to a western country, stay where the hell you are.

Imagine if only the Southern Baptist Convention claimed to speak for all Christians in the country. That's exactly what's happening in this article and in Britain.

The Muslim Parliament of Great Britain said that they haven't even discussed these issues, and the Sufi Muslim Council outright said the MCB's full of shiat.
