like khakis and a blue shirt, hatred of bush/cheney/rove is appropriate for most occasions, polls and pseudo-blog forums with an endowed squirrel as their mascot

It's funy because it's true.

2007-05-24 1:11:56 PM
it's funny, too.

That looks more like the WSJ site to me.

Vader's pretty tough to beat. Cheney's pretty evil, but he didn't cause a civilized planet to not exist anymore.

2007-05-24 1:41:16 PM
Gosling: but he didn't cause a civilized planet to not exist anymore.

Uh, Pluto? Hello?

Marcus Aurelius: That looks more like the WSJ site to me.

The actual Amnesty page is here:

http://www.amnestyusa.org/Annual_Report/Axis_of_Evil/page.do?id=1011362&n1=2&n 2=18

I think WSJ saved a screenshot in case someone at Amnesty caught some flack and yanked the poll.

MyNameIsNotMervGriffin: The actual Amnesty page is here:

Whoops! Just checked the link and it looks like someone already got smart at Amnesty. Here's the cached version from Google:

I voted for that fictional character Pol Pot.

2007-05-24 1:51:36 PM
Vader's pretty tough to beat. Cheney's pretty evil, but he didn't cause a civilized planet to not exist anymore.

Point of order. That was Grand Moff Tarkin, not Vader.

2007-05-24 1:52:01 PM
Oh. My. God.

AI is comparing Dick Cheney to Fictional characters!

That's exactly what the Nazis did!

2007-05-24 1:52:31 PM
The page is called "Untitled document", which means they are not entitled to hold this poll and its results are not valid.

Am I the only one that thought this was equal parts stupid and funny?

Our mission is to help those wrongfully imprisoned but in the meantime - let's crack some jokes.

2007-05-24 1:56:18 PM
The Hobgoblin? Clearly Dr. Doom is the Dick Cheney analogue of the comic book universe.

2007-05-24 1:58:27 PM
Someone please do a photoshop of Dick Cheney as the Yellow Bastard from Sin City...

/Please?

2007-05-24 2:07:49 PM
"The Hobgoblin? Clearly Dr. Doom is the Dick Cheney analogue of the comic book universe."

I'm going to have to go with Lex Luthor. He occasionally finds himself in positions of great power, but is really just a glorified thief/conman in the end.

2007-05-24 2:15:25 PM
HulkHands: Gosling: but he didn't cause a civilized planet to not exist anymore.

Uh, Pluto? Hello?

Hahaha!

2007-05-24 2:21:17 PM
Dr. Doom and Lex Luthor are each great Dick Cheney analogues, but they're in different universes themselves so they can both be the analogue "of the comic book universe" since there are several.

As for Darth Vader, I dunno: Dick is evil enough, but
1) I can't see him reforming to the light side.
2) Vader is far too awesome.
3) I don't think Dick Cheney can lift another person over his head while being struck by force lightning bolts.

2007-05-24 2:21:58 PM
...and Dick Cheney is an butthole. Is that all you got, subby?

I kid, I kid. Maybe.

2007-05-24 2:50:36 PM
Well, you gotta be fair. If they wanted to compare Cheney to the non-fictional monsters of the last half-century, they'd have to wade through some pretty serious competition - all heavily supported (or excused) by the Leftists.

Hussein (styled himself after Stalin), Mao, Pol Pot, Mugabe, et bloody cetera...

2007-05-24 2:50:38 PM
Trick question. Dick Cheney is Darth Vader's alter ego. The Hobgoblin is just a bad plot device.

2007-05-24 3:08:52 PM
Anyone got a Ming the Merciless photo w/Dick Cheney face?

2007-05-24 3:10:11 PM
Hobgoblin and Vader are snappier dressers than Cheney.

2007-05-24 3:16:48 PM
Wait, Hobgoblin, or Green Goblin? There's a significant and important difference there that needs to be clarified.

They got the Star Wars reference wrong.

Heh, I love people that think "leftist" is a word. Ever hear people say "rightist"? That's because anyone that would use it is intelligent enough to know that it's not a word. It really is too bad these people breed. All well, we all die eventually, so at least we won't be around to see these people outbreed the intelligent and eventually eradicate the human race in the pursuit of making a white king James english speaking jombie Jew descend from outer space on a floating space city shooting fireballs.

2007-05-24 3:43:31 PM
karl2025: 3) I don't think Dick Cheney can lift another person over his head while being struck by force lightning bolts.

With one hand, no less.

This thread has convinced me that Amnesty was successful in getting people to think seriously about the whole issue.

Krymore: Heh, I love people that think "leftist" is a word.

You better get someone to correct the dictionary:

left·ist
-noun
1.a member of the political Left or a person sympathetic to its views.
-adjective
2.of, pertaining to, characteristic of, or advocated by the political Left.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/leftist

Ever hear people say "rightist"?

Yes:

right·ist
-adjective (sometimes initial capital letter)
1.of or pertaining to conservative or reactionary political views; noting or characteristic of the political Right.
-noun
2.a member or supporter of the political Right; conservative or reactionary.

You seem to be under the impression that made up slang with a definition that a certain group of people attribute to it constitutes real English. I can say "suhdfisuohaoigoigy" means "anyone who isn't me, and is therefore destined to spend eternity drowning in chocolate pudding" and if I get enough people to repeat it, would that make it a real word?

2007-05-24 3:56:48 PM
So who was in 2nd place behind Dick Cheney?

2007-05-24 4:00:35 PM
Dick Cheney, using his powers to break ties in the Senate to violate human rights everywhere.

2007-05-24 4:08:33 PM
Darth Vader gets entirely too bum a rap. What did he ever really do? Slay some traitorous Jedi, shoot down some traitorous rebels and choke a few of his own people. Of course who was traitorous and who was righteous was defined by Palpatine, the real person you should be going after. And Tarkin blew up Alderaan, not Vader.

2007-05-24 4:14:20 PM
and if I get enough people to repeat it, would that make it a real word?

Yes. .. Or did you think the dictionary was written by God, and we are not allowed to update our language as civilization evolves? Where do you think new words come from? Someone makes up a word, it catches on.. and eventually rises through the ranks to become a real word!

Actually, yes, it would be. How do you think new words get into the language?

2007-05-24 4:19:58 PM
Wow, has Amnesty ever gone into the tank since the Biko days.

2007-05-24 4:20:10 PM
Krymore: You seem to be under the impression that made up slang with a definition that a certain group of people attribute to it constitutes real English.

Correct. How else do you suppose it got in the dictionary?

I can say "suhdfisuohaoigoigy" means "anyone who isn't me, and is therefore destined to spend eternity drowning in chocolate pudding" and if I get enough people to repeat it, would that make it a real word?

Correct again. You get a cookie!

2007-05-24 4:22:26 PM
That guy's right. "leftist" is a stupid farking word. And just because it and "rightist" is in the dictionary doesn't make it otherwise.

2007-05-24 4:27:27 PM
Krymore: if I get enough people to repeat it

i will not repeat your word.

2007-05-24 4:39:43 PM
meddlin' kid
i will not repeat your word.

=(

You know who else had a bad human rights record and connections to the Bush family?

[image from blogs.southflorida.com too old to be available]

Mugato: That guy's right. "leftist" is a stupid farking word.

"Leftist is a stupid word" /= "The word leftist does not exist."

Hobodeluxe: You know who else had a bad human rights record and connections to the Bush family?

ok please explain the connection to the Bush family, Not trying to flame or anything just wanting to know

I know it's a bit of a stretch, but Bush is a member of Skull and Bones which dines on a set of Hitler's silverware in their crypt when they meet. That's all I've got direct links.

mouser_inc

That's an old chestnut. I thought everyone had read the prescott bush fritz theissen crap already.

2007-05-24 5:38:41 PM
That guy's right. "leftist" is a stupid farking word.

You do realize that you just complained about a real (and accurate) word in a sentence that has the word "farking" in it, right?

2007-05-24 5:41:37 PM
Shouldn't that be Darth Vader and The Green Goblin? And why aren't the x-men represented in this discussion of "which comic characters are Dick Cheney most like?" I'd say he's like Sinister, but I could be wrong.

/geek.

2007-05-24 6:21:24 PM
Mugato: IF you want to be strict about it - Vader is Lawful Evil, in that he bends and uses the rules for his advantage. The Emperor, and possibly Tarkin as well, are Chaotic Evil, evil for the greater evil. Tarkin may also be Neutral Evil, evil for evil's sake.

2007-05-24 6:46:12 PM
Skwidd:
Wow. Why doesn't anyone take Amnesty International seriously?

Oh, gee, I dunno, because they're the world's foremost non-partisan human rights watchdog? Of course, "non-partisan" in this case means "they oppose abuses in the developed world, including the USA", so I guess that pisses some people off.
