I was hoping things would be different with the Dems...

Silly me.

/All politicians suck donkey balls.

I heard Pelosi on CSPAN yesterday saying exactly that. It wasn't a cave in, it was a stealthy Democratic manuever to herald in the ending of the war.

She even said it with a straight face.

While I had hoped they wouldn't let any funding through without a guarantee of the war ending sometime this century hopefully something good will come of this.

I guess that's the most optimistic way to look at it. It does make Iraq the main issue for the '08 elections. Since it's wholly a Republican war, Democrats do stand to gain a lot of ground.

Unless, of course, Hillary gets the nomination for pres.

Well, it was either give in or give the GOP a major election-season talking point. They did the right thing - and by "right," I mean the only sensible thing.

Bush has until September to convince 70% of America that "progress is being made in Iraq." After that, precious few Republican Congressmen will stay on his sinking ship.

I don't get it. What political viability will they have in '08 if they betray the reason they swept the midterms in '06? Judo my ass.

Judo is all about falling backwards after pretending to shove forward. Judo is all about flipping the opponent by virtue of his own weight as he leans into the emptiness of your caving.

Um, either my Judo instructor sucked ass, or this guy has it all wrong. As I remember it, the one who's leaning forward has the balance upperhand over the one who's leaning backward. Or maybe the laws of physics don't apply here. Hrm.

If there are less hurricanes, it is due to global warming.

If there are troop deadlines, it is because of the superior skills of the Democratic leadership.
If there are no troop deadlines, it is because of the superior skills of the Democratic leadership.

I think I'd like it best if the American middle class simply stopped spending money needlessly. Like we all just callled each other up and simultaneously:

stopped eating out
stopped driving everywhere
quit traveling
bought only from Goodwill or the Salvation Army
didn't buy any real estate
turned off the TV
rejected the Internet

Extreme wishful thinking - to be sure - but I'd like to see the economy come to a screeching halt and watch every consumer-supported industry have to survive on their own.

Horseshiat. Together with the regular budget which has no chance of not passing they've effectively funded the war through the end of Bush's term. This war has just been dumped in the lap of the next President and President CooCoo Bananas is laughing all the way to the bank.

Is there something in the intertubes today? Farkers are even stupider than usual today. Who is the middle class, bw? They're vice presidents at at restaurant companies, shop-owning mechanics, airline pilots, retailers, real estate attorneys, advertising execs, and, increasingly, web designers. We all need each other.

The Democrats didn't win in 2006 because they were anti-war. They won because the Republicans sucked so much at their jobs that people were willing to vote for the other guy on sheer principle.

I don't think bwesb heard you. I'm sure that he's just turned off his computer to help fight corporate greed and reduce his carbon footprint.

Because no good radical leftie would demand such things of everyone else without first doing it themselves.... would they?

"But look, these people aren't stupid. They know what they're doing. The real issue is does the anti-war progressive base know what it is doing? Is it focused on making sure that Democrats win the White House in '08 and keep control of both houses of Congress?"

Uh...NO. The anti-war Progressives ARE NOT focused on making sure that the Democrats win the White House in 2008 and keeping control of both houses of Congress. The anti-war Progressives are focused on STOPPING THE DAMN WAR.

I do not give a flying fark if the war gets stopped and then Americans get all pissy and elect Republicans back into power. If America is that farking stupid, then America DESERVES to have the Republicans back in power.

So, in conclusion: Go fark yourself.

bwesb: I'd like to see the economy come to a screeching halt and watch every consumer-supported industry have to survive on their own.

After that, we can hold hands in a big circle, chant to levitate the Pentagon and stop the war.

Hey, it worked for Abby Hoffman back in 1967--the war in Vietnam DID end. Oh, it ended eight years later and the Pentagon didn't move. But you can't argue with results!

2007-05-23 1:56:18 PM
The dems won because of their anti-war status its been said and proven many times. The GOOD thing is most republicans didn't know this or choose to ignore it and that will help us in 08. Best thing we can hope for is the status quo till 08 and then we can push their thinking aside and get back to work once they have zero say.

Unless, of course, Hillary gets the nomination for pres.

Or Ron Paul gets the GOP nomination. Or both.

I would like to see the cognitive dissonance of the left-wing anti-war folks in a Clinton vs Paul race (not worried about the centrist or right wing anti-war folk - they will do the right thing in that case).

sigdiamond2000: So let me get this straight: The argument coming from the Republicans, then, is that the Democrats didn't cave for the purposes of political expediency?

The Democrats caved because they thought, "If we cut off funding for the troops, Bush just might be crazy enough to leave our troops out in the middle of hostile territory just to score political points."

And they were probably right to think that.

Here, I can help you get it straighter. There is no 'argument' coming from the Republicans. There is only amused satisfaction that the dems caved after championing 'the will of the people' that wasn't there to begin with.

Americans didn't elect a slim majority of dems to congress so that the United States could raise the white flag.

It had to do with 'macacca', 'you jackin it?' and stuff like the bridge to nowhere. The liberal dems overplayed their hand and are now forced to fold in humiliating defeat.

Got it straight now?

Anyway to debunk you're uninformed comment, Yes they were elected to end the iraq war. All polls showed that Iraq out did EVERY other issue combined. It has been said over and over again it has been documented time and time again. You can put your fingers in your ears and say it isn't so but as usual reality has a liberal bias.

Thanks for the kind words. I really like you alot too.

Say, if all of that blather is true, then why aren't the dems fulfilling their elected purpose, hmmm? After all, like you say, they have a 'groundswell of support'! It's kind of a mystery, isn't it? Hey, you don't think the MSM might have published some biased polls do ya'?

Care to explain the dems cave in? I just love reading your stuff. You're so informed!

And yeah, reality does have a liberal bias - on April 15th, that is.

From a different article:
The agreement with the White House and Republicans would be tied to approval of as much as $20 billion in domestic spending sought by Democrats, as well as an increase in the minimum wage.

The Democrats didn't cave in. They saw an opportunity to get other pieces of their agenda through the White House and took it. And while the anti-war people may be in a snit, it was well played politics. The Democrats need accomplishments like getting the minimum wage hike to show legislative progress in 2008. And, they can always address war spending again next year when it'll hurt the Republicans more.

It really isn't that complicated. Having the war continue into the election is in the Democrat's best interest. Why on earth would they try to stop it?

Mighty_Dog, MyNameIsNotMervGriffin

I think you missed the point of my post, which I admittedly didn't phrase very well (I shouldn't have so broadly referred to it as the "Republican argument"). My point is that the submitter seems to be implying that "caving" because they felt defeated reflects worse upon the Democrats than the idea that they may have done it out of sheer political expediency, which is pretty much what this article (written by a Democrat I assume) is saying.

My point being that admitting defeat is, somehow, now seen as a greater sin than covering that defeat in spin and obfuscation. I guess it's a sign of the times.
