TFA: The captions are written with poor English and bad grammar, as if the cat is commenting on the situation depicted in the photo, which sometimes is digitally altered for exaggeration.

Gold, Jerry, Gold.

lolcats -- combining the Web abbreviation for "laugh out loud" (LOL) and "cats."

I'm stunned...especially the "cats" thing.

Every caturday now, it seems, some journalist swings by to say that, in case you haven't missed it, there's this online phonenom of captioning cat pictures.

I love "lolcat" pictures, myself, yet I have no idea why I do.

Everyone, why do we enjoy making and seeing "lolcats"?

I don't know, but why aren't they on get-well cards already? I swear my cold has disappeared in the past five minutes.

The Intelligence Group, which monitors the Web for things that appeal to Gen X, Gen Y and tweens, recently identified lolcats as a hot online trend.

I would imagine that Hallmark and the rest would consider it beneath their talents.

After all, as the internets prove, anyone can do them. . .

FTA: For example, one lolcat posted online recently showed a black and white cat sticking out its tongue. Its eyes looked artificially brightened and bugged out with the aid of an image-editing program such as Photoshop. The caption: "mai tung dryd out."

Wow...a written explanation is sooo much funnier than the actual picture.
