Michael's cryin' now, I bet. He's THROUGH, man.

That is devastating. Devious. Witty.

No...wait...it was just stupid.

And this guy went to all the trouble to make a video and post it on teh 'tubes. Ffffeh.

I know almost nothing about Mr. Thompson's policy positions, but I love him already.

Thompson has the opportunity to refute Moore's allegations, and... nothing.

If someone called me a whore of the healthcare cartel, I'd want to defend myself. You know, if I was innocent.

2007-05-15 3:51:16 PM
I actually thought better of Thompson. Yet, he does nothing to refute the claims, doesn't debate anything....and disregards his own health by smoking a cigar while suffering from Lymphoma.

I personally thought that Thompson could mop the floor with Moore (and I'm a liberal), but he doesn't.

We were alone. Thompson's work space looks just like what the home office of a successful politician or CEO should look like--though a little messier: a large desk, dark wood, leather furniture, lots of books and magazines and newspapers, a flat-screen TV, and box upon box of cigars--Montecristos from Havana

Hypocrite.

I hate to see that smug bastard Moore get points. And Thompson just handed them over.

Fred Thompson isn't the only conservative in violation of Cuban trade restrictions...illegal cigars....

Limbaugh stayed at the Connaught Hotel, "and I got up on a Friday morning and walked across the street to Desmond Sautter's. And I was in heaven.'' The store didn't have any Hoyos, he says, "but they had some Punch Double Coronas and Partagas Lusitanias and Montecristo No. 2's. And I tried them. And I don't care what anybody says. I know it's a matter of taste, but as far as I'm concerned, this is something that not even the Communists have been able to screw up. It's the best tobacco in the world. There's no comparison. This is not to put anybody else's down. I've looked into it. I've studied it. It's like Bordeaux grapes. You can try growing them in California, but they're not the same. They've taken Cuban seed to Jamaica and Honduras, but it just isn't the same.''

Limbaugh loves sitting back and relaxing with a cigar. "Of course you have to save the Cuban cigars for special occasions. I like keeping things special in my life. So I do smoke some Honduran Punches now and then. And I still have a box of Ashtons and Partagas No. 10's. But this is a special occasion. Being interviewed by Cigar Aficionado is a special occasion. And this Ramon Allones Gigante is a hit. This is like five Cohiba Robustos rolled into one.''

It won't be long before we hear B-B-But Clinton....

Paris Hilton: Drunk Driving :: American "conservatives": Cuban cigars

Laws are for the little people. Members of the upper castes are exempt.

I never actually heard Thompson "invite" Moore to check in to a mental hospital.

As for me, I get my Cuban cigars via my Canadian friends.

2007-05-15 4:27:18 PM
I'd say it's a slap in the face to moore... Thompson has a ready made video clip to played on the net and in the media. It's even timed to fit into media time slots. Moore's letter was posted by drudge and was full of errors and had several sentences that were actually missing entire words.

Besides, Moore wins because you whiney liberals think I should pay for health insurance for people to damn lazy to buy it themselves. If you and your kids don't have health insurance then you better not have a car. Kid's health is more important. Make that sacrafice and then I'll consider helping all those lazy tight asses get insurance.

/pays 200+ for insurance because it's important and it's not your responsibility to provide it to me.

Help me out here...What's the name of the movie that Thompson did about the "pitiful state" of the American cigar industry?

Help me out here...What's the name of the movie that Thompson did about the "pitiful state" of the American cigar industry?

[insert quizzical dog picture here]

huh?

You don't see hypocrisy in railing against Cuba while, at the same time, violating the law and purchasing Cuban goods?

Or did Thompson actually appear in a movie about cigars?

I think the point you were trying to make got sucked down into they abyss of your sarcasm and coyness...but I really am not sure.

1) There are such things as pre-embargo cigars. They are very rare and very expensive, but they do exist.
2) Trying to equate the production of a propaganda piece with major blockbuster production backed by a Hollywood budget with the purchase of a couple of boxes of cigars is laughable.
3) Micheal Moore is fat

There are such things as pre-embargo cigars. They are very rare and very expensive, but they do exist.

...and if you believe that's what Rush and the good Senator are smoking I've got some land in Florida to sell you. Cheap.

Trying to equate the production of a propaganda piece with major blockbuster production backed by a Hollywood budget with the purchase of a couple of boxes of cigars is laughable.

Nobody has equated the production values or the budgets. I'm just saying that kvetching about how horrible Cuba is and kvetching that some "liberal" has misrepresented how horrible Cuba is while, at the same time, purchaising Cuba's most known commodity in violation of the law makes the kvetcher seem like a hypocritical douchebag.

Micheal Moore is fat

Indeed he is. He should take up tobacco smoking.

Ok, maybe there is a misunderstanding between us. I am not trying to compare how much money is being funneled to Castro by the two parties. That is an interesting question but not one that I had thought of. It would be nice to know what Moore had to do to get to film in Cuba, and how much he spent while he was there.
My point is this, no one is saying what Moore is doing is right or wrong. They are just saying that because Fred Thompson has a box of Cigars on his desk that he does not have the right to comment of Moore. It's like a jaywalker pointing out a murder and the murderer tell the jaywalker to STFU & GBTW cause he is breaking the law too. Has everyone lost their perspective? Ok, how about this. Lets enforce the law, Fred can get a fine and Micheal can go to jail. How about that?

2007-05-15 5:16:16 PM

Like teenage Dominican hookers, right?

Moore doesnt' make allegations. He makes accusations (mostly false), insults your mother, farks you cat and THEN shouts at you if you ask him to kindly behave like a normal, civilized human being.

2007-05-15 5:19:52 PM
I know some conservatives who don't support the Cuban embargo.

Its bullshiat. If you believe in free markets and democratization, then how could you support it?

Look at whats happened in China. We trade with them now, and their society is beginning to change for the better.

2007-05-15 5:24:10 PM
Awww, Fred's just showing that he's just a glorified windbag like all the other celebrity GAWPers. He's got the "lack of content" down; now, if he were just a little more forgetful, we could call him President Reagan.

2007-05-15 5:28:12 PM
My point is this, no one is saying what Moore is doing is right or wrong.

What Michael Moore did is probably illegal under US law but fits within the morality that Michael Moore has assigned himself. In MM's world Castro is not as bad as everyone in the USA believes, Cuba is a nice place and the Cuban political system is to be envied by all. As such, MM patronizing Cuban businesses and giving money/status to Cuba fits within his stated worldview.

What Fred Thompson did is probably illegal under US law and it doesn't fit within the morality that Fred Thompson has assigned himself. In Thompson's world, Cuba is a dictatorship that is hostile to America and whose very existence 90 miles from Florida has represented a threat to Americans for over 50 years. As such, his purchasing Cuban goods does NOT fit within his stated worldview.

See the difference?

2007-05-15 5:37:42 PM
Look at whats happened in China. We trade with them now, and their society is beginning to change for the better.

Yeah, but China didn't steal any of our stuff. Castro did - there were a LOT of US investments in cuba when he took over.

Ok, granted - much of it was mafia money, but still....

Also, China lets us built cheap factories, pollute like crazy and use/abuse their labor force as much as we'd like. Castro probably wouldn't let us pollute his island and he doesn't have as large a labor pool to exploit.

2007-05-15 5:58:58 PM
Bill_Wick's_Friend See the difference?

What MM did is definitely wrong, how he feels about it does not matter. He is going down there for the purposes of helping a communist dictator. Or maybe he is just trying to take a dig a America and does not care if he help Castro by doing it. Either way travel to Cuba is illegal.

What Fred did was wrong also. How it fits into his ideas on freetrade not withstanding he is still wrong. Buying a couple of boxes of Cubans may keep Castro in power for about 2 seconds. Too bad JFK started the embargo. If any other President had done it it would have been lifted by now.

Mind you that Cuba makes most of their money by having people in America send money home to their families but a distant second is the fact that most Cuban tobacco is shipped to Jamaica to be rolled. Since it is rolled in Jamaica it is considered to be Jamaica and can be sold in America. However that is soon to change. Castro has seen the caliber of his tobacco crop decrease lately and their for the revenue he gets for the crop. So what does he do? He decides to end crop rotation and start planning all the fields! Anyone who knows anything about farming knows that this is a very bad idea for the long run.

If want a fine cigar try a Padron http://www.padron.com/ (pops)

All that being said, lets apply the law! A fine for Fred and jail time for Moore. Fair is fair

2007-05-15 6:45:53 PM
how he feels about it does not matter

In assessing the level of hypocrisy, one's stated personal feelings on a subject are entirely relevant.

When Rush Limbaugh takes illegal drugs he's a hypocrite because he has railed and ranted against those who use illegal drugs. When Tommy Chong takes illegal drugs he's not a hypocrite, even if the action itself is entirely identical to that of Rush's.

Since it is rolled in Jamaica it is considered to be Jamaica and can be sold in America

I have never heard of this. Cuban SEED gets exported, yes, but my understanding is that Cuban leaf never leaves the island except rolled into cigars. The ersatz-Cubans grown in Honduras or Mexico are inferior products to the real deal grown and rolled in Cuba.

I'm finding this difficult to care about.

It's like those "Re: Re: OMG ABORTION" video manifested flame-wars you see in the side bars on YouTube sometimes.

No one is saying anything really profound; nothing is accomplished; it's just a way for the community to brew and take sides; forming meaningless factions of Pro-Dipsh*t or Hooray-for-Asshole.

It means nothing.

I found this amusing. At least the guy has a sense of humor and a great radio voice. Not sure that's worth throwing my vote away on one of the two major parties.

I smoke Cubans on occasion when I visit Canada. They seem like no big deal, but what do I know?

Where's your corroberating evidence that the cigars are in fact from havana?

I'm assuming the reporter knows how to read.

Maybe he doesn't. Maybe the reporter is lying. These could be fake Cubans. Thompson might have printed up the rings on his own printer. The reporter might be illiterate and unable to distinguish between a Philly Blunt and a Cohiba. Space aliens might have placed those boxes on the man's desk. Some sort of wormhole might have appeared which caused the reporter to see Fidel Castro's desk in the same exact spot that Thompson's desk was occupying.

In the world of the partisan apologist, I realize, anything is possible.

2007-05-15 7:08:23 PM
hate to tell ALL OF YOU: moore & thompson are both actors, and pretty bad one's at that. Thompson never addressed his connections to health care & moore is a moron, by virtue of starting this dog fight. Both are anti-American & both should be in jail.

Oh, BTW,: 1) There are such things as pre-embargo cigars. They are very rare and very expensive, but they do exist.

Not since 1986. Thanks. A monticristo #2 NOW is either illegal, or really crispy.

2007-05-15 7:09:05 PM
I love how these liberals are all bent out of shape for cigars that may or may not have come from Cuba.

Hiya Flash. Although you and I both know that most cigars marketed as "Cuban" are actually made in South America, it's probably not common knowledge among Liberals. After all, they don't smoke. ;)

Still, wouldn't you agree that the embargo against Cuba is really, really stupid? It's a hold-over from the 1960's, for heaven's sake. I can't begin to imagine why it's still in place. Seems like some sort of juvenile payback for the Bay of Pigs.

2007-05-15 7:09:11 PM

Michael Moore is just an angry turd.
