Excellent headline, subby.

And, Lutz is a putz! He was giving us that same guff back in the '70s & '80s.

"New" rear-wheel drive vehicles? Every vehicle I ever owned up until about 1989 was rear-wheel drive.

Those were the "old" rear-wheel drive vehicles.

These are the "new" rear-wheel drive vehicles.

TFA: Rear-drive uses more gas

And the award for the most inaccurate generalization of the day goes to....

Ya think?

Eh, why should I bother to quit smoking? Cars are going to be all FWD and CVT (whoo hoo, ain't that a bunch of fun to drive), Imus cant say nappy, the Chinese are poisoning our critter food, my 401K accounts are doing shiat, SS isn't going to be there when I can get it, global warming, fake tits, overpriced gas..........fark it.

This is just insanely stupid, GM is basically giving away entire market segments with this move.

WeaselFark: And the award for the most inaccurate generalization of the day goes to....

They do use slightly more gas, though. An RWD setup is heavier than a FWD setup in a comparable car.

Or, they could just bring back the spirit of the Chevy sprint/metro. If they could get ~45MPG EPA highway with an 80's style carburated engine and steel chasis, imagine what a modern non-hybrid could eke out, using new lighter composite body parts and an all new engine design. I could see it holding 5 people (barely, of course), getting 65mpg EPA highway, and costing around 11,000$ base with. Farkers, if they did this, would you buy one?

2007-04-13 9:53:49 PM
You'd have to put up with a 1.0 liter engine, though.

WeaselFark: TFA: Rear-drive uses more gas

But anyone towing a trailer needs rear wheel drive.....So hopefully this does not apply to my gas guzzling truck..
Nothing worse than being in the mud and getting the car all dirty with the front wheels spinning...Better to have rear wheel drive and spray your buddys car with mud..

And they aren't new, aren't they?

The concept isn't new, the chassis they are designing are new.

RWD isn't necessarily less fuel efficient, but it is less space efficient.

This is, of course, the exact OPPOSITE of what they are are really building. I swear, I saw a commercial today that touted a Lexus as "the new 400 horsepower hybrid".

I looked at that and had an insta-headache. 400 horsepower in a sedan. So you can really tear up the road, ya know? In your sedan. No, it's not a Lambo, or a Ferrari, it's a four door sedan.

Lexus. For the dumb-as-f*ck.

So? It's not like there isn't a market for those types of cars, it's just incredibly small. Look up Bentley, Maybach, Rolls Royce, Chrysler SRT8 triplets, STS-V, CTS-V, M3, M5, 7 series, more than a couple MB cars, S4, S8, A8W12 etc etc. Those aren't cheap for a reason. The LS600h won't be cheap either.

Pontiac G8 and Chevy Camaro are go, they can't be stopped.

For eerything else the hold back is the courta ordering the feds to mandate fuel efficency increases... that is the farked part there.

GM can and will use their dual mode hybrid on RWD vehicles, just there is no way at the moment they or BMW or DCX who shared the costs can produce these in enough volume for a mass produced rwd sedan, first dual mode will be the 2009 MY GMT900s (Tahoes etc) that will get a 25% increase in efficency.

BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Rolls Royce, Bentley, all make sedans with very strong engines, so I'm failing to see the dumbass

Who needs brakes when you have a reverse gear?

The "real wheel drive uses more gas" makes no sense to me. I don't see why you can't make a rear wheel drive econobox too.

That's because Toyota is sticking "hybrid" on everything because people seem to be willing to pay a mint for them. Far more than the hybrid system costs to add. It's the power of marketing.

We didn't start the fire, it was always burning since the world's been turning. We didn't start the fire, no we didn't light it but we tried to fight it...

Nope. Companies lose money on hyrbids. Hence why I advocated just using a tiny engine, optional AC, and composite body panels.

Every car I've personally owned has been RWD, and my the couple or three FWD cars my fiancee has owned haven't really done it for me. I love my MR2, and if I can avoid owning a FWD car I plan to.

I'd love for someone to bring back a light weight, no-frills FR or MR car with modern technology.
