Hmm, maybe we should let England take the lead on this one, and back THEM up this time?

Submitter wants to insert his "middle east" into Nancy Pelosi.

tandkquinn: I wonder what subby thought of the GOP Congressmen gallivanting around during the Clinton administration?

Or the fact that Republican Reps. Aderholt and Wolf are currently visiting Syria and Republican Rep. Hobson is with Pelosi on her Middle East tour.

But hey. McCain can walk down a street with 100 troops, 3 Black Hawks and a bullet proof vest and Subby doesn't have a word to say about that.

"I am very disappointed that the speaker chose not to act," said Rep. Charles Dent, R-Pa.

pissant republican politicians crying crocodile tears for their most despised class of people: soldiers.

the bush administration hasnt been very vocal on the subject. almost as if even they understand how counterproductive it is to insert heated rhetoric into the time sensitive ongoing negotiations between two other countries.

The officials said the British had asked the U.S. not to make harsh statements about the incident that would set up the incident as a U.S. versus Iran issue.

"They have asked us to keep the rhetoric down and not do anything that would jeopardize their efforts to get the sailors and marines released," one senior official said.

Because it is part of the racist/touchy feely world we live in. We treat Muslims like they are children. "Don't say anything to upset them" type of thinking. It makes me want to vomit

I'm sure the civilian hostages from Ahmadinejad's last political endeavor would like to discus Iran's treatment of prisoners.

I wonder if his government punished him and his group in anyway?

I'm not saying our forces don't make huge mistakes, but don't absolve the Iranians just yet.

Bought as much as yours do. It's just that I can't imagine anyone seriously believes and says the stupid things that you spout. So, I conclude that you're not in earnest.

1. You're a Fark mod trying to generate posts (and thus pageviews, ad views).
2. You get paid to post here, by whatever special interest group or political association.
3. Some other option.

Because no one can say things that are that idiotic and still know how to use a computer.

I'm going to guess the British government is thinking more about getting their troops back, rather than the emotions of muslims. They probably don't want to have to sell them weapons through back channels like we did to make it happen.

I can agree with you to a certain extent, the cartoon riots made me pukey.

Right. This whole thing is about our over-sensitivity. It's definitely not about getting 15 British sailors home safe.

Let me guess, you're still feeling some anti-Muslim edginess because several media outlets chose to show Chocolate Jesus...

You make my point exactly. People like North trying to bribe to get the hostages accomplished the exact opposite. People like Carter not acting more aggressively to get our hostages back made the situation worse.

Rock and a hard place. Sometimes people just have you by the balls. That's when I start talking.

Anything short of all out war isn't going to get your people out of there (and that would likely be their death sentence), and that isn't a real option. There are always face-saving options for both parties.

The Brits have done it before, and we did it when the Chinese nabbed our spy plane. Anyhow, they are our friends and have asked us to stay quiet for now. I would do that for a friend and say "Call me when you need me."

2007-04-02 4:30:30 PM
I'm not sure if you guys realize this, but this is a farking HOSTAGE SITUATION. It's not a political event like certain Repubs are trying to make it out to be. It would be totally irresponsible for the Speaker of the House, third in the line of presidential succession, to go on air denouncing the Iranian regime. The important thing right now is to get the troops back, not make political hay.

Unfortunately Repubs from Bush on down aren't getting that, and seem to be itching for a fight instead, because regime change worked so well last time.

I agree. I'd like to see them with some bigger balls, but it only makes them look weaker when we ride up on our horses and save the day. Or fark it all up even worse. Still, I doubt we know exactly what's going on in their bi-lateral talks.

btw: An American citizen, who they will not name, is reportedly missing in Iran. Of course, it's not at all related to the missing soldiers.

I think that the British are remembering what happened during the Carter era fiasco, where Carter opened his big mouth and made political hay on air every chance he got. Either negotiate quietly behind the scenes, or write them off and blow up a battleship. Mouthing off on camera accomplishes nothing.

It has everything to do with this being a British problem with British soldiers. Beyond saying we support our allies, there's not much else we should be doing.

Considering that one of the first demands that came out of Iran was for the release of the hundreds of Iranian prisoners we have from anti-terror operations in Iraq, that's a bit easier said than done.

Of course, since Iran's first mention of where they captured the Brits showed the same position the Brits claimed (miles inside Iraqi waters), it's hard to claim the Iranians are negotiating in good faith of any sort.
