RIP Herb - you were a class act all the way. Say hi to Kirby for us.

Didnt the Twins also lose their longtime PA announcer a year or two ago? It's been a rough few years for Twins fans.

I've been listening to Herb since the 60's.

Yep, dettigersnw22, Bob Casey the PA announcer from 1961 until he died before the beginning of last season.

Two years ago, dettigersnw, not to mention Kirby Puckett last year.

Herb Carneal taught me how to love baseball on the radio when I was in grad school. Growing up, I was (and still am) a Cubs fan, but I could just turn on WGN-TV and there was Harry Caray and Steve Stone; who needed radio?

When I went to grad school (in 1991, the World Series year), I didn't have a TV, so I listened to WCCO-AM... and Herb was so good, now I practically never watch a game without the radio on.

//My first ever approved!
///Wish it wasn't for this reason, though.

"Harry, harry, look!" "My God! Good news fans, the Indians are showing signs of life for the first time in weeks! In fact they seem to be beating the crap out of each other. Willy Mays Hayes squares up to hit Rick "the Wild Thing" Vaughn, and why not, everyone else in the league does! *willy throws a punch* Hayes swings and misses! I don't know Monty, it looks like Vaughn is carrying his left a little low, this could hurt him in the later rounds!" - loves Bob Uecker

poor twinkies....

both of their voices and their fallen star all so recent. Even though I never came back to baseball after the last strike/lockout, I will always remember 87 and 91 as two magical years for a minnesota sports fan.

I am always reminded of those magical years whenever they dig up Hrbek for commentary.

Fun fact of the day: Bob Uecker actually has an honest-to-God stalker. She's banned from Twins games, regular, pre-, and post-season, for life.

RIP Herb

This sucks, Herb was great. I don't mind the dazzle man Dan Gladden so much but I can't stand John Gordon. Makes me wonder who in the Twins organization is going to die next season. Carl Pohlad maybe? Hopefully?????

I grew up listening to Herb, and I still remember on summer evenings hanging out outside with my dad with a radio playing from the garage and either playing catch or just chilling and listening to the game.

Which, if Uecker broadcasted for the Twins, would mean something.

Bob Uecker = Brewers broadcaster

John Gordon = the one who says "Touch 'em all"

Herb Carneal = greatly missed, but the voice will live on

This is very sad and made that much more painful since it happened right before the season opener. We'll miss you, Herb.

The voice of summer, to me growing up.

I also loved listening to Milo Hamilton when I was in Houston. I know he's not dead, but they don't make them like those guys anymore, which is too bad. The new generation of baseball guys are mostly dumb jock types that talk about the law of averages and other nonsense while missing the game right in front of them.

Maybe they'll get better when they're older and wiser.

Legendary baseball broadcasters and producers always seem to die either shortly before the season begins or at the end of a season. Not sure why that is.

/Harry Caray dies just before spring training in 1998
//Arne Harris dies on the night before the last day of the baseball season in 2001
