(SmartMoney.com)   Professor withholds taxes every year to protest military spending. Which the IRS always takes anyway, plus fines. Which means he's paying MORE for military spending than he has to. Remember: He's a professor. He's smarter than you   (smartmoney.com) divider line

An advanced degree does not necessarily denote intelligence. Take a look at the graduates of Bob Jone4s University. Dumb as a sack of hammers and half as useful.

Not sure if your post was invalid or not because I still can't figure out what you meant to say.

Well, I think it's pretty obvious he isn't a professor of math, finance, business, or economics.

Oh, the numbers, they make my head hurt. Read Lord Byron to me and make the pain go away.

You don't get it. You're supposed to go to jail, then live in a cabin in the woods, with your mother's house three miles away.

You could aways claim not to recall typing the post in this manner. Even though we have the post there in front of us to prove that you did. At that point, you would either need to provide a strawman defense or perhaps an executive privelige memo espousing the need for independence among those of us who were supposed to have advised you, truthfully, without fear of reprisal. We would then have to subpoena you only after you've contacted a mod to delete the post and erase any evidence that it ever existed.

In the end, you would be able to claim that we are misremembering and the entire thing has been nothing more than a witch hunt to provide a show trial. For the next 7 years, your name will be invoked everyday for many inexplicable reasons to give relevancy to an argument that has no merit. Is that what you want?

Ha, jokes on him. Our children and grandchildren are going to pay for most of the current military spending and our most recent adventures adventures. Suckers.

2007-03-30 12:23:34 AM
Of course, remember how much it costs to actually enforce the tax code. You're dealing with a bureaucracy. The enforcement probably costs the government at least as much as it gets in interest.

And then of course you have the issue of putting your money where your mouth is, a concept which seems foreign to many of us in the U.S. today.

Why cant he deliniate his taxes away from war spending?

I know you cant deliniate taxes at all, but it does lead to a principle of why he cant use peace organizations as tax deductable.

Good principles even if it isnt an effective or loud protest.

Why doesn't he just leave the country, renounce his citizenship, and solve the two problems of him funding the military and us having hear about his dumbass.

He might be subject to tax for ten years or so anyway. The U.S. government doesn't like citizens renouncing their citizenship for tax purposes.

I know you cant deliniate taxes at all, but it does lead to a principle of why he cant use peace organizations as tax deductable.
Deductions aren't credits--they don't give you a dollar for dollar decrease in your taxes. He'd have to donate all of his income down to whatever the hell the non-taxed income spot is, and there may be limits on the amount of charitable deductions recognized.

So I guess if there are no other restrictions, he might be able to live at the subsistence level to avoid his taxes... might.

Step 1: Write database that automatically flags under-paid tax returns. CHECK
Step 2: Add SQL query that runs off that checking for previous years of under paid tax returns.
Step 3: Fine the everloving shiat out of people who make a routine of doing it.
Step 4: Profit!

Ethics, conscience and morals...

I dont have a single speck of any of them, but I won't lay the boot into someone who (perhaps) may.

You can't put a price on ethics. I guess some of you math whiz fail to see logic in that.

I have a friend whose father is a professor. He's one of the most insufferably irritating men I've ever known. He's never wrong, and he'll go to great lengths to explain to you as condescendingly as he can how big of an idiot YOU are.

I could see him doing something like this. In fact, I'm surprised he hasn't done so already.

2007-03-30 2:54:36 PM
Hello all, I do agree with the professor. If you do not support the war then you should not pay "that" portion of taxes. And then we can all stay calmly here at home and do something else with our lives.
I'd vote him for president!!!

Why doesn't he just leave the country, renounce his citizenship, and solve the two problems of him funding the military and us having hear about his dumbass.

Seriously, couldn't he move to Switzerland so he knows that his money isn't going to the military, but the taxes are higher.

But really, this guy is on to something. I mean, why can't we all decide exactly where our taxes are going? I mean, I didn't elect 3 federal representatives and at least as many state and local officials (depending on where you live) to look at my miniscule contribution to the entire tax revenues and decide where it goes. Thats my job, jerks.

Tax dodgers, freeloaders, and asshats, thats all they are. And what better way to "hide from the IRS" than to go on record in a newspaper. Hello Audit!

Because if 300 million people decided to put several trillion dollars into the perverted arts, then we're screwed.
