Pretty sad when Comedy Central cancels a show like the UCB, yet keeps a show like "South Park" on the air still.
2001-07-05 03:45:28 AM
Damn, that was a 5 second difference. Pretty cool.
2001-07-05 04:56:38 AM
that's that synchronicity shiat.

does anyone else think it's kind of odd that we have to use html trickery to say shiat, but the mail page can have it in headlines?
2001-07-05 05:08:23 AM

lol. I haven't had one posted in a looong time. :) Thanx drew!

Meat: Aw, shoot, Meat! If the S-word appears in the titles list, that's just one instance. However, if words like f--- weren't automagically transmogrified by Fark, these forums could devolve quickly into a morass (hunh, hunh -- he said "ass") of cursing.

It is indeed possible to type words like shiat, but because of the extra effort required to fool the farkifier, people really think twice about it instead of just tossing it out because they can't think of a decent alternative.

There are a lot of people on the net who should be forced to use a thesaurus.

I don't miss my television. At all.

I like to see somebody who isn't afraid to ask the tough questions.
2001-07-05 07:33:05 AM
Like "why the fark does this coont of a system not properly mask unsettling words when posters start biatching?"
Yes, I agree. That question was quite cumbersome to formulate.
2001-07-05 07:40:42 AM
"Mommy, what's coont?"

"Well, dear, it's a forbidden word. It denotes part of the female anatomy which the religious right takes exception at. Strangely enough, they also take exception at the fact that in some cultures, it is cut off. There's no satisfying some people - especially the women who have had it cut off, ha-ha. Well, anyway - when you finally meet one, you're gonna love it. But until then, just act as if it didn't exist. It's a forbidden word. Oh, I already said that. Just shut up, OK?"
2001-07-05 07:44:41 AM
Or is it "take exception to?". Yup. These types of questions sure are hard to answer.

I'm glad I live in a country where they can swear on TV
2001-07-05 11:06:59 AM
Yet ironically, Entertainment Weekly feels unable to use the word itself, in an article about the word!

What's the point of fark enabling stupid word-filtering code anyway? It'll only make people come up with more inventively offensive ways to be rude...

Mme hit it right on the head
2001-07-05 12:25:21 PM
They don't really explain anything in the article. They just say that its not illegal, right?

Radio Head sheds somber image. Appears on upcoming South Park.

On the guy who posted like second or third. Comedy Central canceled UCB (upright citizens brigade) BECAUSE IT SUCKED ASS!!! Just like ABFAB (absoluely fabulous) and the soon to be primetime glick.

Mme.Mersault: Can you please tell me how they made fun of the Scienos. I love it when shows make fun of those idiots (the Simpsons did a good one while back).

For those of you who missed the episode, it is availible here:

sounds like seele96 is still bitter american gladiators got cancelled.
2001-07-05 06:03:28 PM
MrPlaid Yeah, it's not illegal. TV adheres to voluntary rules, for the most part (cable anyway). But on broadcast TV, it would be illegal. Still, broadcast can air tobacco or liquor ads if they want to, they just have an unwritten consensus not
2001-07-05 06:54:49 PM
after ucb and stranger's with candy were cancelled, i sent comedy central a vitriolic email (the first time i've ever contacted a network). i complained that league of gentlemen (which had just about run its course) and south park were the only shows they had left that were original programming that weren't just people in a room (a la man show, both ben stein's, etc.)

they responded with "thank you for showing an interest in our programming. be sure to watch the final episode of stranger's with candy this monday!"

then my head exploded.

Actually, tobacco ads on tv have been illegal since January 1, 1971. Congress passed the law, Nixon signed it in April, 1970, and the Supreme Court upheld it in late 1971.

Tobacco companies asked for the law because they were afraid of having all ads outlawed -- print ads and everything. They were also able to argue that anti-smoking ads paid for by the government weren't necessary since they weren't allowed to advertise anyway.

Swearing on TV has always been legal, but you can file a complaint with the FTC and they can fine the station. There's a famous case where some nut filed a complaint against Pacifica when they broadcast George Carlin's seven dirty words album live on the radio.

Remember -- swearing good, advertising bad. It's the American way.

Mungo - thanks. That felt good.
2001-07-06 09:37:42 AM
It's even more scary when stations like CNN censor out dirty words in a newsbroadcast. The free press, supporting censorship?

And how can you show the news as they are happening if they censor out som of the words the persons in the interview or whatever are saying?

Im glad i live in a country with free press.
