(US News)   Yesterday morning, Associated Press misquoted Alan Greenspan as saying a recession was coming. Yesterday afternoon, the stock market tanked. This, of course, is all Matt Drudge's fault   (usnews.com) divider line

But despite the inflammatory Drudge headline- which, in all fairness, linked to an Associated Press story with that same title - the Maestro was hardly so definitive as Drudge made him out to be.

How in the hell do reporters get away with writing stuff like that?

2007-02-28 4:55:43 PM
Matt Drudge is a ghey.

2007-02-28 5:22:33 PM
I saw a link to this article on TF just before the crash. I blame Drew Curtis.

2007-02-28 5:46:27 PM
That's preposterous. Someone forgot to blame the liberals!

.

I've got a teacher who, sometimes in place of teaching, will sit there and browse The Drudge Report.

2007-02-28 6:35:04 PM
why give this idiot that much credit?

2007-02-28 6:35:25 PM
ChairmanKaga: Matt Drudge is a ghey.

No. He had ONE scoop in his entire life and has tried to build something off of it. He's failed. He is irrelavant. I do like his police lights, however. They are funny.

2007-02-28 6:36:11 PM
Yeah, and at 2:00pm yesterday the DJIA's servers crashed, but I'm sure that had nothing to do with it.

2007-02-28 6:36:31 PM
I'm comfortable with scapegoating Drudge.

2007-02-28 6:37:47 PM
Drudge kicks ass.

2007-02-28 6:38:28 PM
This just in: Matt Drudge adds drop shadow to his Title. ... developing....

2007-02-28 6:38:51 PM
He's failed. He is irrelavant.

Yea, hes only like the most trafficed news site this side of CNN.com.

If drudge is a failure, what do you define as success?

Yes, and according to Fark, the market crashed because Todd Bertuzzi was dealt to the Red Wings.

2007-02-28 6:40:52 PM
The problem with Matt Drudge is that when he links to articles, people read them.

That is all.

2007-02-28 6:41:44 PM
Yeah, a guy who plays "let's pretend" by dressing up as a 50's news guy is responsible for the market crash. Please.

Blame China, and then the institutional investors. When China's stock exchange nosedived, the lemming investors as always started selling everything. In two weeks they'll likely have put the money all back.

/Hates the investor lemmings
//Goes long

Fark that fool.

2007-02-28 6:42:47 PM
Isn't Drudge just Fark without all of us dumbasses giving our opinions?

"...along with a weak durable goods report and the plunge in the Chinese stock market"

one outta three ain't good, jimmy. nice english on that shot

2007-02-28 6:43:23 PM
mrtimo

The TSX probably tanked because of that. Don't sell the Bertuzzi short, it wouldn't be the first time he's caused something to free fall into a coma.

McDonalds gets more traffic than a good deli, and the Weekly World News gets more traffic than Scientific American.

So perhaps there are different metrics for success.

2007-02-28 6:48:57 PM
I don't care, as long as it's not my fault. At least, I don't think it's my fault, although it probably is somehow. Damnit, it is my fault, sorry.

2007-02-28 6:50:03 PM
I wouldn't inflate Drudge's ego any more than it already is by intimating that he could affect anything. The only thing that's his fault is that he's an asshole.

2007-02-28 6:52:42 PM
Blaming Drudge here, is yet again, is a classic case of shooting the messenger....

Where's the US News and World Report on the shabby quality of reporting that the AP, LA Times, NY Times has been regularly delivering?

2007-02-28 6:55:29 PM
Regardless, it wouldn't surprise me that something like this can happen, given that stocks are just a load of lies and bullshiat that creates a shaky foundation on which our economy is built on. Do so much as touch it and things come crashing down.

Stocks, and by extension, our economy, are lies and empty promises made by rich people to make themselves even richer. It's a horrible system that will screw us over completely one day.

2007-02-28 6:56:06 PM
maxheck: McDonalds gets more traffic than a good deli, and the Weekly World News gets more traffic than Scientific American.

I'd trust McDonald's over Matt Drudge any day.

BravadoGT: Blaming Drudge here, is yet again, is a classic case of shooting the messenger....

In some cases, there's nothing wrong with putting a few bullets into messenger...

BravadoGT:

For example? Name me a good article by Drudge, and I'll give you ten by The Times. Name me a bad one by The Times, and I'll give you another by Drudge.

The Times (properly) attributed this slump to the Asian markets, not to some vague comments by Greenspan. Seems they got the story right.

No, there aren't different metrics for success. Your ego is apparently large enough that you feel you can dictate whos successful and who isn't based on your personal opinion, when the only metric that matters on the net is traffic and influence and matt has both.

2007-02-28 7:00:44 PM
mmmmmmm McDonald's

2007-02-28 7:02:00 PM
Wait just a minute. Greenspin tells the truth for the first time since 1967, and now they tell me it was a misquote?!?!

Well, if that don't make it officially drink-thirty, nothing will.

2007-02-28 7:03:21 PM
Isn't anyone else somewhat alarmed at how fragile the whole mess is, that one person saying that it is all about to collapse can make it collapse? Shouldn't there be something more substantial to the financial markets?

By that metric, he's out-traficked and out-metricked by a good number of porn sites...

If that's all you care about, then yes, you're right.

If that's all you care about, it also explains why you're a fan of Drudge. maxheck was distinguishing between quality and popularity. Apparently quality doesn't matter to you.

2007-02-28 7:08:58 PM
I didn't say it was Matt Drudge's fault, I said I was going to blame him...

Riiiiight... and if pure traffic is all that matters, than any crack whore is a better woman than your wife or G/F.

I'm sorry, but I hope you're trying to be absurd here.

I thought a selloff in China's market caused the recent global stock crash. Selloff was due to fears of government crackdown on illegal trading and possibly imposing a capital gains tax.

\wait, what?

Actually, you might be interested to know that Alexa claims Drudge gets less than half as much traffic as The Times, about a fourth as much as CNN, about a tenth the views as Google News, about as much traffic as Slashdot, and a fourth that of Digg.

Yeah. Way to go, Matt. You're more popular than some 14 year old girl's MySpace blog.

2007-02-28 7:20:57 PM
Other News sites with more traffic than Drudge include:

The BBC
CNET
Fox News
The Washington Post
GO.com
MSN.com
Yahoo!

Of course, that's not even taking into account traditional viewership and readership. CNN's television viewers dwarf Drudge's visitors. The Times's subscribers dwarf Drudge's visitors. The BBC's listeners dwarf Drudge's visitors. The AP's syndicators dwarf Drudge's visitors.

If popularity is the sole measure of success, Drudge has a lot of work to do.

2007-02-28 7:29:03 PM
I don't know about this, but do you know what is Matt Drudge's fault? The fact that you can't find a decent gay hairdresser anymore.

They're all becoming "reporters".

get off your high horse, Drudge pwns Fark and if you are so t'd off that Drudge has influence on news coverage and stories then start your own site from scratch and hope to do better. Drudge is the american dream

99% of people who saw that headline did not see it at drudge, I would bet. I saw it on yahoo, which, I believe, still get a few more views than drudge. Idiotic conclusion.

The idea that the headline caused the crash is intriguing, though.

You were joking, right?

Fark isn't a news site. I get my news from the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Guardian, Reuters, and the Financial Times, primarily. That's a pretty high standard for Drudge to compete with. Oh, and the readership of any of those is higher than Drudge's.
