Sheesh, you'd think those millionaire hippies at Burning Man would at least take care of the workers.

The phrase "Burning Man Offices" is pretty funny.

Since when do hippies go to Burning Man?

Everyone I've ever met who talked my farking ear off about Burning Man were Yuppie types who get off on staged, watered-down hedonism. I've never been to one, but it strikes me as the kind of event built for marketing managers and advertising execs who want to take acid once a year and feel like they live interesting lives.

You know, the problem with hippies is that you label them as such. It's like punk. There have been no real hippies since the '70s and no real punks since the '80s. What we have now that are labeled hippies and punks bear no resemblance to the original and you can't judge them by the same standards.

Costello: That's what I want to find out.
Abbott: I say Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know's on third.
Costello: Are you the manager?
Abbott: Yes.
Costello: You gonna be the coach too?
Abbott: Yes.
Costello: And you don't know the fellows' names?
Abbott: Well I should.
Costello: Well then who's on first?
Abbott: Yes.
Costello: I mean the fellow's name.
Abbott: Who.
Costello: The guy on first.
Abbott: Who.
Costello: The first baseman.
Abbott: Who.
Costello: The guy playing...
Abbott: Who is on first!
Costello: I'm asking YOU who's on first.
Abbott: That's the man's name.
Costello: That's who's name?
Abbott: Yes.
Costello: Well go ahead and tell me.
Abbott: That's it.
Costello: That's who?
Abbott: Yes.

PAUSE

Costello: Look, you gotta first baseman?
Abbott: Certainly.
Costello: Who's playing first?
Abbott: That's right.
Costello: When you pay off the first baseman every month, who gets the money?
Abbott: Every dollar of it.
Costello: All I'm trying to find out is the fellow's name on first base.
Abbott: Who.
Costello: The guy that gets...
Abbott: That's it.
Costello: Who gets the money...
Abbott: He does, every dollar. Sometimes his wife comes down and collects it.
Costello: Whose wife?
Abbott: Yes.

PAUSE

Abbott: What's wrong with that?

Burning Man Fan: Burning Man is the greatest gathering in the history of mankind - music, art, politics!

Me: It's a big party, people go to get high and get laid. That's fine by me. Quit trying to dress it up in socio-psycho-babble.

BM Fan: But people will be building sustainable housing from used soda bottles. Small-scale farming and pedestrian-friendly urban planning are highlights of the second day.

Me: The only time you'll see the sustainable housing is when you are passed out inside. As for small-scale farming, we used to call that the stash patch back in the day.

BM Fan: But it's Important! It's a major Cultural Event!

Me: Fine, enjoy yourself. I'm happy you have a good experience. I just think it's sad that you have to justify going to a party.

BM Fan: Cultural Significance! Artistic Achievement! Social Experimentation! Etc Etc!

Me: (sigh)

20% peace-love-and-party weekenders, degreed
15% hardcore live-the-dream hippies
15% DIY freaks
10% tinfoil fetishists

grizzlyjohnson: I know I'm going to regret asking, but what exactly do Burning Man and socialism have to do with each and how exactly does Burning Man condemn socialism as a "complete sham"?

Burning man happends once a year where a complete town is built in the desert outta nowhere. People bring their art and other stuff there to show off, but there is ONE rule. Except the the coffee/tea stand in the middle you can't buy or sell ANYTHING there. You can give stuff away sure and you are encouraged to do so. But money means nothing there. Also everything has to be completly removed at the end, a leave nothign behind philosophy. Of course this was true years ago, its probably changed as its gotten larger. I guess the point is no commune can survive past a small group

Of course it is run by businessmen! These are the same two timing farkers who, in the sixties, thought about the troubles in our world with some enlightenment, and tried to be optimistic about the future of the world.

Then they got a paycheck, and discovered that there are soooo many of them, they can manipulate the economy to their bidding, and cause inflated pay for their CEO's, a stock market built on not producing enough hard goods, and a housing bubble that is going to ruin 50% of the homeowners when it bursts.

There are a few of the still righteous hippies left out there. Most of them make a living travelling the Renaissance fair circuits and shacking with the now rich ones who gave it up. The yuppies welcome them into their homes cause it makes them think they are still connected with the "old ways.'

The only place money means nothing is the afterlife, and if you don't believe there is one, then there is no such place.

If you find someone trying to convince you otherwise, hold your wallet.

I call shenanigans...

Let's review:

1: Burning Man offices. That's okay. Soembody's gotta be charging those emo-yippies to be there.

2: Burning Man offices have an 'hours of business' sign a la barbershop. A little less believable. A business which is catered to an event which happens once a year typically will not shell out the extra for a store front.

3: The page mentions the 'Burning Man Regional Committee.' Burning man only happens in one place...

4: Similarly, the man stated that his friend got screwed over by the 'Branch Manager.' Burning man doesn't have 'branchs' other than the ones which are, appropriately, used as more or less spare parts.

Yeah. This is a satire. Probably one put on by Burning Man Offices. :p

Burningman = Hippies = Phish concerts.

Then explain to me why, when I lived in a college town on the East Coast, all of the frat and sorority kids would be wearing tie dyes when Phish came to town?

Does this mean that Phish = Hippies = Frat boys?

They did tickets different this year. You were suppose to send for tickets via snail mail and have your envelope post marked before a certain date. I guess the demand far exceeded the supply last year. If you want tickets now you will need to contact some official people via their website, I would suggest, unless you know someone.

burning man is fun...because camping/drinking/drugging/crazypeoplewatching/dancing/lookingatart - is fun. haters are a bit ridiculous...what about those things is there to hate? Naked girls giving you booze and weed sucks?

Also ridiculous: the burning man DPW. last year, they drove around stealing booze, beating random people up, and expected to be thanked for it. Apparently it's been a problem for years - but they get a pass since they set the city up. I saw it first hand this year...they jumped off their little madmax car, tackled some guy that wasn't looking, pushed over his girl, and when he tried to fight back, they jumped him enmasse...beat the living hell out of him. Seriously, screw those wanna-be thunderdome pirate dressing cockjackets.

2007-02-20 5:02:03 PM

I don't think it was a staged event by the corporation. The one anti-protester actually put down his sign at the end and listened quietly to the protesting spokesman. He looked embarrassed that he was sent out to anti-protest when he had no idea what they were talking about.

I have never been. But it has grown beyond a nice art experiment. That is what happens to those things. Other than the Rainbows I suppose. They seem to keep up the original intent of their lives.

2007-02-20 6:48:38 PM
Re: DPW...

"Apparently it's been a problem for years - but they get a pass since they set the city up."

I've had a weird run in with them myself... once they drunkenly snapped off a 2X4 against the side of my truck when they drove by, and another time one of them tried to drop a car on me from his forklift when I wouldn't hand over my beer.

It was charming in a dangerous sorta way, but this isn't a reason not to pay the group of individuals a fair wage.

Incidently... what part of drop a car on me seems hippie to any of you?

Seriously guys... if you haven't been, you don't know what you're talking about, and just look stupid.

So, what's the over-under on how many years before Burning Man turns into a debacle on the scale of Woodstock 1999?

The 4th of never?

BM is unlike Woodstock in many many ways but the most important of them is that the attendees at Woodstock were captive particpants who flipped out after being exploited in every possible way by the organizers.

Burning man is a blank canvas that becomes no more or less than what the particpants make it (excruciatingly bad poetry and some not half bad pictures from my first trip in 1999 Here .

If an element like that that started rioting and raping at Woodstock showed up at BM I would set the over/under on their lifespan at 24 hrs. For all the stereotypes about the attendees (participants as we prefer) the one most often missed is the number of bad-ass survivalists, "rugged individualists", and ex-military (particularly special forces) Burners there really are. And the playa beyond the city is vast and empty, and floods once a year. A very good place to hide a body. Just sayin'
