sacrileg: Any chance of getting a daytime shot from the same place at the same angle?

I would have to do some serious archive digging.

2007-02-18 07:59:36 PM forked_at_fark [TotalFark]

It's bedtime here.
Will post a pic of the neighborhood tomorrow.

Why would you have to do some archive digging? Didn't you just take that UFO shot? And don't post pics of the neighborhood - just go out on that balcony again, and take a shot of the same area from the same angle using the same zoom. Shouldn't be hard, what with the house in the lower left corner and that tree on the right you can use for reference...

I've been reading this thread on-and-off all afternoon, and just realized I haven't posted in the best thread I've seen in a long time. This reminds me of the time we took a bunch of Tyvek "bunny-suits" and taped up the sleeves, legs, and neckholes with duct tape. We then filled them with helium (had tons of it for the lasers) and released them at lunchtime. We made the local news, something about sightings of skydivers who were apparently blown off course, and the guy at the local mini-mart said he saw ghosts flying around in the sky.
Oh, yeah, it's a goddamn streetlight.

clambam your story about the mystical rays appearing in your photos reminded me of the Ghost in the Vatican. A guy took video of the inside of the cathedral and was stunned -- stunned, I tell you -- to see a mysterious orange floaty thing in most shots, hovering way up in the air, obviously a ghost. He managed to get interviewed on the TV news with it, before someone explained that the Italian tour guides in the Vatican often use bright orange pieces of cloth on long sticks, holding them up high so their tour can find them again.

TV clip here on YouTube.

Given the extremity of the claim that it's a UFO you're going to have to believe that people's responses are realistic. Even if you had definitive evidence of what exactly it was you took a picture of you'd still be scrutinized unless it was something highly practical... like a street lamp.

Nevertheless I like to believe the better in people, especially quaint, middle-aged, photographer ladies. I'm looking at the original, uncropped photograph in Photoshop and I can clearly see the tree and the building and the "lamp". I'd just as soon say it's also a lamp and you're a kook but quite frankly all the proportions just look off.

I'm going to assume the building shown is a one-story house (saying that for minimal height) I ended up drawing some perspective lines for the shot to see where everything may end up at. Given the position and size of the lamp I'd say it's in front of the house, but after drawing it out the lamp would only be a few feet from the house, probably not in accordance to any safety laws. If it's closer towards the street then the lamp would be pretty darn small and pretty ineffective. Putting it behind the house just makes the lamp look ridiculously tall with a huge light and once again, probably not in accordance with city regulation. Also, the reflection off the "pole" just doesn't look right, even if it's over-exposed.

Given the little information I'm having a hard time figuring out what it may be. Some clearer pictures of the scene would certainly help, also, it would have been to your benefit to get multiple shots of the anomaly... that is unless it was your intent to create a Fark meme, to which you've successfully done (whether you wanted to or not now).

The last thing I think this could be is a UFO.
2007-02-18 09:10:28 PM
Weaps, don't lie to me. That's not your satellite dish, it's the the USS Enterprise, all systems down for minimal visibility within the gravitational field of a class M planet that may support intelligent life.

forked_at_fark: But, it's still not a farkin streetlight !

Dudette, seriously - you've been pwned by your own photo gallery, in gaboo's post showing the street lights in your neighborhood in daylight.

Not to mention lorian69's demonstration playing with the image levels of your original, and what at80eighty and deltapunch demonstrated in side-by-side comparisons of your mystery photo and the photo you took of a street light in your neighborhood.

I hope a good night's sleep has cleared your head. Believe me, I understand what overdosing on NyQuil can do to you...

Streetlights are strange, when you're a stranger. Lighting looks ugly, when you're alone. Wattage seems wicked, when you're unwanted. Bulbs are uneven, when you're down.

Dude, here's your "UFO" (*cough* streetlight *cough*) and the picture of your street that Gaboo found on your website that you took from the same location showing the streetlight that has always been there, put together in blinky goodness.

It's a streetlight. Probably taken from the same location from your window even.
2007-02-18 09:20:54 PM
So my first thought was street lamp, but looking at the full size image it looks like a close up of a Halloween mask Eye slot with a back light and a little water trickling down it.

Obviously it's a UFO camouflaged to look exactly like a streetlight, or a streetlight pretending to be a UFO. But a question like this forces us to stop thinking about the real question of what about the children. Has anyone thought about the children?
