You know, Global Warming doesn't necessarily mean that it will get warmer everywhere. It is very likely that continued melting of the Arctic ice will cause the Gulf Stream to collapse. For those not in the know, the Gulf Stream is what makes Western Europe and the UK fairly warm, and also to some degree the US East Coast. It is worth noting that Belfast, Ireland is actually farther north than Edmonton, Alberta, but is kept warmer by that Gulf Stream.

Even though I know well enough that major ice storm =/= global warming is B.S., I do love the irony.

They really need to change the term "Global Warming" to "Global Climate Change."

2007-02-14 2:39:40 AM
Though this will give critics some pause,
We must keep on heeding the cause.
There's still quite a range
Of climate, and change,
And humans are largely the cause.

Im in Chicago...

this Global Cooling is really going to run up my heating bill...

its freezing here!!!

Well, that settles it for me. I'm going to start polluting again. Yee-Haw!!

I bet the conference on hunger took a lunch break. So what’s your point?

2007-02-14 3:23:02 AM
It's the mean temperature anomaly that is increasing (i.e., warming). Fluctuation in temperature (i.e., heat wave or ice storms) are expected in any meteorological modeling.

Hey smitty, let me explain this.

When it is really hot outside and everyone says that is due to global warming, that is acceptable. But when it is really cold outside, that is not proof of, no wait, what I mean is that the absence of global warming doesn't mean that it, no that isn't it either, ok, just because people say that a warm summer is proof doesn't mean you can use a cold winter...shiat.

Actually, ummm, hey look! It's some dead blond chick!

Either way,I'm going to go burn a bunch of Dunkin Donuts cups.

They really need to change the term "Global Warming" to "Global Climate Change."

What a copout.

For decades its been global warming, and now since its going the other way they're gonna backtrack to "climate change?"

what the crap is that?

So no matter if it gets hotter or colder, they are proven right. Nice how that works out, isn't it?

2007-02-14 6:32:37 AM
I heard the latest theory is that we would be back into an ice age now, if people hadn't started building artificial wetlands to grow rice in several thousand years ago. Yay, global warming!

I know how global warming really works. But I still found this ironic headline funny just because I like ironic humor.

No it's not - it's not acceptable to use individual extreme events either way. You need to look at the long term trends, which few people other than professional researchers have the time or inclination to do.

I do remember some years back when my Intro to Environmental Science professor told us that, as counterintuitive as it may be, a possible effect of global warming would be record colds, due to the changes in global winds and all the jazz mentioned above. That having been said...it's like raaaaiiiaaaiiinnnn, on my wedding day....

Outside of the land of 30-second sound bites scientists use the term "Anthropogenic climate change" to differentiate the weather changes coming from natural causes and the stuff that humans are forcing.

You can see why MSM and bloggers like "Global warming" instead. Too clunky.

I have made a pilgrimage to worhip and study the undisputed master of global warming intertube debate. I have carefully recorded the master's holistic views on the causes and cures for this challenhe to us all.

Without further ado here are the enlightening words of Autorantic Virtual Moonbat.

If you aren't rabid about the capitalism and discriminating-against of this president, then I see you are a Repooplicker moronic servant of Sean Gleeson and the Moral Majority. Don't make me laugh. Say no to theocracy and superstition. Say no to our government of the Klansmen, by the antichoicers, and for NATO. U.S. get out of Taiwan immediately. We've seen this before, in 1992 in Grenada, when 55,225 handicapped herbivores were hobbled by the petrochemical industry. I guess, Smirkelgruber lied about that too. (Or is that supposed to be a secret?) Hope is not a four-letter word. The Thief-in-Chief's War Against Solar Energy must end now. The 700 Club can fustigate 62,167 outspoken exploited Palestinians in Fallujah, all in the name of "accountability"? Indeed, that makes it okay, then. (As I recall, I am being sarcastic.) Unlike you and Pope Benedict, I am not in love with violence.

BWAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHHAHHAHAHHHAAAAA!!!!1!!!!1111!eleventy!!

Yeah, spin the BS as hard as you can liberal earth worshipers. Your "consensus" of scienteists is falling apart. Though the attempt to silence those who disagree with OWL The Green Oracle Gore has been strident lately, the inconvenient lie is falling apart.

Please explain to me if global warming is causing it to be colder in some places, how in the hell are the ice caps going to melt? Since 70% of the polar ice caps displace ocean water, tell me how this "new science" allows water levels to rise if the ice melts? Why does the IPGCC mesure sea level rise in Millimeters? Why does their latest report leave out data for the medieval warming period (you know back before they had SUV's?) Why does the report say that temperatures will continue to rise regardless of what man does to curtail this warming. Shouldn't we be spending money to build sea walls or special air-conditioned domes to cover all the populated cities? What about poor people who don't have air conditioners? Shouldn't the bagrillions of dollars be spent on something practical rather than curtailling our standard of living to affect a few decimals of a degree change in temperature?

Seriously, you people would better off just to be honest and say it's a socialist scheme to get money from those who earned it to give to those yearned for it. More people would probably go along with it. But of course that doesn't fit the liberal play book, which apparently hasn't been revised in years. Have they not put out a new copy of Marx yet?

Yeah, lets pretend that our society will end because of the "deadly greenhouse effect" while people who have the means and the will to destroy our way of life are spending every waking moment figuring out how to do so.

A big Red Forman Dumbass to all anthropogenic warmers out there along with a big dose of alidade scorn and gails of derisive laughter (Notice I didn't say Bruce?).

Where will you people go to get your reputation back?

This headline is stupid. We've long since established that Global Warming, or "Climate Change" can be defined by any climate phenomenon at any time. There is no concept of normalcy any more.

Throw another sacrificial virgin onto the fire, boys. Mother Earth is angry today!

In 2004, you might remember, a Gore speech on warming was greeted by one of New York's coldest nights in a century. He came out to Oz last Xmas just before we had one of the coldest summers for decades...snow in three states where temperatures usually reach into the high 30s (C).

Maybe he's missed his vocation in life & should be selling heaters to the bedouins.

2007-02-14 7:04:24 AM
Please explain to me if global warming is causing it to be colder in some places, how in the hell are the ice caps going to melt?

Erm... because they aren't in the places that are getting colder. The arctic is currently one of the fastest warming bits of the globe.

Since 70% of the polar ice caps displace ocean water, tell me how this "new science" allows water levels to rise if the ice melts?

Because Greenland and Antractica are on land, and contain enough water for tens of metres of sea level rises.

Why does the IPGCC mesure sea level rise in Millimeters?

Because that's what we're seeing at the moment. Long term it's likely to be measured in feet and possibly even metres. A rise of a few feet could still be catastrophic for some areas, and sea level rises are by no means the only concern.

Why does their latest report leave out data for the medieval warming period (you know back before they had SUV's?)

It doesn't - it acknowledges that there are other causes for warming (which are pretty much ruled out for current change), that the MWP did occur, but was more localised than some people are claiming.

Why does the report say that temperatures will continue to rise regardless of what man does to curtail this warming.

Because the magnitude of the change depends on what we do, and 1C is much better than 3C.

Maybe, I'm not an economist, but if that genuinely is the best value way of fixing the problem long term then great. I very much doubt that that is the case, but I'd much rather be debating the solution than denying there is a problem.

The global warming kooks (and I mean the extremists that have made this into almost a religion) would have more credibility if EVERYTHING was not proof of global warming. Warm temps? Global warming! Cool temps? Global warming! More hurricanes? Global warming! No hurricanes? You better believe that's global warming! etc...

2007-02-14 7:10:28 AM
That's not ironic. Ice storms will become more common as global warming progresses. The atmosphere at the upper levels is warmer than the surface. As more C02 gets trapped, the upper atmosphere will see more events of being warmer than temperatures at the surface, therefore, causing more ice and sleet storms, and less snow storms.

The global warming kooks

Kooks meaning the people who actually study the problem?

Tell ya what... Please explain where the kooks who claim that doing anything about the problem get their science.

The ones who say that the world will end if we actually do something about it.

You might find that they are on far shakier ground than the 2500 climatologists who contributed to the latest IPCC report.

Some parts of the US are not only having unusually cold weather, but -record- cold weather right now. The eco-nuts are happy to give plenty of publicity to hot summer days as examples of Global Warming, but pooh-pooh record cold spikes and California oranges regularly getting frozen as just another freak of nature. Fact is, if you average things out, we're no warmer right now than we were in the 1920's, and perhaps less so. And if you look at the (lack of) hurricane activity and temperatures this past year, it's entirely possible we've hit the peak for this cycle and are back on the way to colder temperatures again.

Global policy on warming / cooling is based entirely on media perceptions, which are totally unscientific and based solely on what the temperatures have looked like the past few years. 30 years ago it was Global Cooling, now it's Global Warming, and 30 years from now it will be Global Cooling again. The reality is somewhere in between, and probably has little or nothing to do with human output.
