I think I'll just wait for SP1.

"Wow! What a crappy clone of my Mac OS X!"

I do believe we've found something lower than console fanboys - OS fanboys.

Here are my suggestions to fans of all (popular) OSs:

Mac fans - Try building your own system without hacking the kernel.
-nix/BSD fans - Try getting popular games to run as simply as Windows can.
Windows fans - Try to surf the internet for a month or two without getting some form of virus.

No single OS is inherently better than any other. MacOS is basically "Babies First OS" - everything is overly simplified and it's very hard for you to mess something up. Of course, it's easy to keep a system stable when you only allow one manufacturer to make them, and the fact that it's built on top of BSD gives it its security. The -nix systems are totally malleable and can be set up for virtually any need you may come up with. This comes at the severe cost of ease of use and setup. You cannot sit a layman in front of a linux box and let him loose. Windows combines nigh infinite hardware options with the GUI of MacOS. It pays for it with stability issues. The difficulty lies in the fact that most users run in full administrator mode, which is a security nightmare. Vista is a step closer to fixing this, but it will take quite a while before Windows software gets accustomed to the fact that it can't always be run as an admin.

Anyway, I'm rambling. I'll be quiet now.

KrunkSplein: Windows fans - Try to surf the internet for a month or two without getting some form of virus.

How about 10 years or so? Will that work for you?

KrunkSplein: Anyway, I'm rambling. I'll be quiet now.

The rambling bothers me less than the sense you're making. Where's the fun in that? So stop it.

How ironic.

How ironic. Version 2.

I submitted this before I read your post...

Does Macinfarker know that his username immediately removes all credibility he may have had in this thread?

Bill "Puto de Vista" Gates

/see, it sounds like "point of view"
//but it means "Vista gigolo"

Gaboo: How about 10 years or so? Will that work for you?

Yes, but you and I are not average Windows users who just walked into Best Buy and bought a new Vaio.
2007-01-29 12:05:39 PM
Macinfarker doesn't realize this 'here conversation required credibility. If I lose this argument, do I have to surrender my TotalFark account?

By the way I was a Windows sysadmin in a 1200 user community for 3 years, and an OS X admin for the last 5. Not as impressive as yours, I'm sure, but in my experience Windows has far more issues than OS X has. At least Apple figured out how to compartmentalize user data and settings.

Or "Wow! WoW doesn't work any more!"

God I hate flamewars, but anyway.

OSX may seem like "baby's first OS" but it is far from it. I love it because I can set it up like for my parents, that don't know anything about cmputers. For me, I find it very hackable and customizable. You can get down pretty deep and make it work for you.
2007-01-29 12:30:49 PM
The only reasons Vista will catch on is because it will be pre-installed on 90% of new computers sold and Microsoft will stop supporting XP in a couple years.
2007-01-29 12:30:50 PM
Wow! The spyware is built right into the operating system!
2007-01-29 12:31:14 PM
1: OS-X sux big donkey cox.

2: Windows is a tool of the devil.

Save time with all the typing, just enter a number and move along.

No middle ground on this one.

Windows fans - Try to surf the internet for a month or two without getting some form of virus.

I'm certainly no fan of Windows, but it's not that hard to avoid viruses and such.
2007-01-29 12:31:26 PM
I'll write a couple w's on my asscheeks and show them a big hairy wow.
2007-01-29 12:31:35 PM
Vista. So easy, even a hacker can do it.

Vista. So easy, even grandma can do it.

Vista. So easy, even your tech support can tell you to reformat and for you to call back in 3 days.

Good article in The Toronto Star

After reading it, I'm 100% certain I'm not about to update any of my systems with this piece of legalized spyware.
2007-01-29 12:32:07 PM
Bill Gates has also taken up playing the fiddle.
2007-01-29 12:32:23 PM
I prefer:

"Wow, that video card I need to run Vista costs more than my pair of custom-built AMD PCs from 2003..."

/followed by: "SHIZ!!! This video card needs a new mobo. Wow, and RAM and CPU too!"
2007-01-29 12:33:09 PM
I have been using Vista for about a month. I haven't lost any data and I don't think it sucks.

Nice cartoon. "You want to buy Vista? Well there are a bunch of different versions, so you should probably just buy a $1500 new computer." How stupid.
2007-01-29 12:33:24 PM
Wow. My computer is a 733MHz with only 384MB RAM and built-in video card, and it can't run Vista at all (at least not with Aero, which seems to be the only thing they're advertising).
2007-01-29 12:33:39 PM
Then, Gates said, there are layers of wows for all the different types of PC users: the gamers, the students, the business users, the moms.

ahhhh layers! like an onion!
2007-01-29 12:34:09 PM
Vista causes anal leakage?
2007-01-29 12:34:25 PM
Vista? What? I am still waiting on my windows 95b patch for USB 2.0 support. Whats this vista thingy everyone is talking about?

/By Wow us mean you smoother interface but more spying and data reporting to microspy I'll pass thank you though for thinking of me MS.
2007-01-29 12:34:59 PM
I am the "computer guy" for my friends and family and so I have been frequently asked about Vista. My response is the same to everyone: If they upgrade to Vista in the next 365 days, I will not even glance at their computer when something goes awry.

I want to see how many "quick fixes" Microsoft releases in the next month or two, then how many security vulnerabilities it finds over the next year. Casual users have no need to own any OS in its first few months of release before the first round of patches hits. The Mac/PC commercials regarding Vista are the only true ones I've seen since the campaign started.

Wow! What a POS...

bonesdilligaf: Obligatory

That was my first thought too.

Now, if we can somehow manage to turn this thread into a dual Win/Mac/*nix and Howard Stern/O&A flamewar, we might tear open a wormhole.

Be first on your block to collect all 5(hundred security updates)!

I'm still on Windows 2000.

Will be until I can't install software on it anymore.
2007-01-29 12:38:07 PM
WOW why can't i rip DVD's anymore?

WOW what is all this shiat running in the background when i play a divx?

WOW i have to buy a new copy if i get a new motherboard?

2007-01-29 12:38:22 PM
Yeah, can't wait for Vista. I can't wait for my 50+ gigz of MP3s (all of which were copied from my CDs, thus fair use) to be rendered useless because I am forced to wear the yoke of DRM.

I can't wait for built-in spyware too.
2007-01-29 12:38:32 PM
I think this is all a misunderstanding due to a misread email. Mr. Gates, the memo didn't say Vista would "wow" said it would "blow"
2007-01-29 12:38:40 PM

Windows fans - Try to surf the internet for a month or two without getting some form of virus.

Meh, get Firefox. Problem solved.

(in fairness, IE7 is a HUGE leap forward from IE6 in that department too)

MasterThief: I think I'll just wait for SP1.

You won't have to wait long:
