That's not what either of them said.

Personally, I think if it's later in the elections and Obama's still in it, they are both going to support him.

Are we ready for a black president?

The last one we had let a rogue nuke detonate in suburban Los Angeles.

One, they didn't say that, submitter and two, even if they did, I could care less what those two race card flinging attention whores think.

[obvious] tag is at a protest somewhere.

Yeah, but the other one helped us avoid the asteroid.

I think they distrust him because Sharpton and Jackson have gotten into the spotlight by 'riding' their race, rather than on actual accomplishment.

2007-01-16 4:16:01 PM
[Sharpton] shrugged: "Right now we're hearing a lot of media razzle-dazzle. I'm not hearing a lot of meat, or a lot of content. I think when the meat hits the fire, we'll find out if it's just fat, or if there's some real meat there." . . .

Fixed.

In the morning, Jackson and Sharpton will still be ugly. Obama will be studly, with rippling latissimus dorsi!

I am currently working to find out where I can volunteer for Obama's campaign.

big_pth: Are you saying the WSJ is making that up? where can I find the actual quotes?

Uh, it's called the opinion of the submitter. And it's a fair one if you ask me. The whole basis of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton's livelihood is completely undermined if America votes in a black president.

PianoJosh Yeah, but the other one helped us avoid the asteroid.

I always was amused at the fact they never said how Morgan Freeman could be the POTUS.

A comet colliding with Earth? Sure.

A space faring demoiltion of it? Possible.

A Black President? Too far fetched.

That's too bad since it's an "endorsement" that would go a long way toward establishing Barack's credibility as a presidential candidate.

I think your priorities are a little skewed.

If you were waiting to attack the black "leaders" (ironic quotes not mine - they are courtesy the WSJ), you'd likely be waiting for them to pledge loyalty to Obama. Then you run with the story you wrote months ago, about why they're supporting this newcomer when Hillary Clinton is the front runner, OMG they only support him because he's black, they are the real racists.

When they all pretty much say "wait and see", I gotta give the WSJ points for taking those quotes, casting them (in the same article) as "attacks", and then making up something about how they are worried about him closing the racial divide (which doesn't really exist, as evidence by additional ironic quotes around "civil rights").

What a douche. This guy deserves a vacation in a small, enclosed space, with Al Sharpton.

Side note: when the fark did everyone start caring about Harry Belafonte? Daaay-Oh!

BTW, for anyone interested:

I heard an interesting interview yesterday with author John McWhorter on MPR yesterday, you can get it here (pops) by clicking "listen to call in show"

You need real alternative (pops) (or Real Player if you've already got it installed) to listen, why the hell anyone would go with Real is beyond me.

I am currently working to find out where I can volunteer for Obama's campaign.

you could start with, oh, the second link on google (after his senate page) you get by typing in his name.

I am sure he will be happy to have a hard and resourceful worker like you on his campaign.

Well hell yeah. I hate people with parkinson's, people with alzheimer's, poor people, and minorities.

But I do have to agree with Al: "Right now we're hearing a lot of media razzle-dazzle. I'm not hearing a lot of meat, or a lot of content. I think when the meat hits the fire, we'll find out if it's just fat, or if there's some real meat there." . . .

I said exactly the same thing in a Fark thread a couple of weeks ago and got slammed by all the circle-jerk Obama supporters at the time.

While I'm as annoyed by Jackson and Sharpton as the next person, am I the only one who's getting really sick of these conservative-flamebait headlines that make up quotes? I mean, once is one thing, but it's getting to be a pattern (like the one about adding/not-adding more troops).

Is it really so bad that the only way to attack your opponents is to completely make shiat up? At this point you have to wonder if your cause is worth even fighting for anymore.

I agree with that sentiment, which goes back to my original point: I think you, and people in general, would be much better served by basing their opinions of the guy on available factual information, and not whether the lunatic fringe endorses him or not.

Apparently. I've been busy lately, so I haven't seen every thread, but it seems like of those I have seen, nearly every single right-wing headline is followed by dozens of posts pointing out that not only is the headline trolling, but it completely misrepresents what's in the actual article. Sort of like, you know, this one.

Once or twice would be one thing, but yeah, it's gotten to the point that it's pretty much every time now.

Make of it what you will.

2007-01-16 5:18:01 PM
Slopinion Journal is as credible as Sharpton, Jackson, or for that matter any of its right wingnut fellow travelers (Instaputz, Real Fuzzy Politics, Stormfront, etc)

Pxtl: am I the only one who's getting really sick of these conservative-flamebait headlines that make up quotes?

What "made up quote"? There's no quote in the headline. You're just sick and tired of any opinion to the right of yours, which is immediately labeled as "trolling".

It's hilarious hearing all the biatching on Fark about right-wing troll headlines and then the ensuing circle jerk that occurs in a thread under a left-slanted headline.

Getting to be? Flakey right wingnut greens are a staple here. It's just the way it is. Have fun with it! If it's any consolation, RL has rendered its judgment on the kookery, and the outlook for the obviously bankrupt "conservative" doctrine the country has suffered under is even more grim for its misguided adherants than it is for the rest of us who are going to have to pick up the pieces.

ftfa:but Obama is a Democrat, so the hostility toward him isn't partisan in origin. Nor is it ideological, really.

nor is it existent, apparent from the quotes used.

hell, i found myself agreeing with al sharpton. i feel so....dirty. and hungry.

Sorry, no "white guilt" over here. Get back to being a sorry excuse of a leftist...

2007-01-16 5:50:47 PM
Those comments were hardly the skewering I was expecting. It was more like, "this guy is untested, maybe it's a good idea to see what he's about - and perhaps actually see if he will run - before we endorse him k thx".

Our view is that Obama threatens Jackson, Sharpton and Belafonte precisely because he has an appeal that transcends race. If Obama is able to gain widespread appeal as a national political figure, it undermines the basis of white guilt, namely the assumption that America remains a deeply racist society.

Utter nonsense, and so off the mark it was obviously written by a white person.

Racism is alive and well in America for average black americans: in housing discrimination, in disparate sentencing for white/black defendants facing similar charges, in employment, salary and promotional opportunities in the corporate world.

Because some guys occasionally have cross over appeal doesn't mean those boundaries don't exist; rather these rare examples tend to highlight the boundaries that exist for most.

Plus, the author acts like Obama represents something new. Ever hear of Frederick Douglass? No? How about MLK? Remember him? Black guy whose birthday was a national holiday yesterday? I don't think Jackson or Sharpton had any bad things to say about him.

Hmmm ... you appear to have had a Fark ID for a while. How is it that you don't know what the headlines are supposed to look like? Each and every Politics headline should have some form a partisan flamebait in it. They're funnier that way. I suggest that perhaps you don't recognize the liberal flamebait headlines because you basically believe the premise behind the flamebait. Just guessing.

The right wingers must be really afraid of Obama. So far all I've heard is "his middle name is Hussein!" and "he's hoping the Saints lose this Sunday!"

New York Magazine wrote, "Obama has untested weaknesses that so far have been obscured by his meteoric ascension." This may be true, but he's likeable, eloquent, and smart; in addition, his last name is neither Clinton nor Bush, two families that have dominated executive politics for decades. Also, he's the only person in this race that cannot be held accountable for Iraq. This might be his trump card, pending how bad things become.

kliq: The right wingers must be really afraid of Obama.

Anyone that wants to be the next president is afraid of him. I like the guy, but I'd also like to see him as Wesley Clark's VP first.
