Washing with soap and warm water and using a condom works even better, but that is only economical in developed countries. The genital chopping will continue anyway because all the big busybodies are totally obsessed with the shape of the ends of penises.

m0llusk, is that proper washing technique what gives you the "dickweed"?

Eh, fry 'em up and they're just like calimari. If you weren't told in advance, you'd never know the difference.

Old Joke Alert:

A doctor who performed circumcisions saved up all the foreskins from the operations he'd performed over the years. When he retired, he took the whole bunch to a leathercrafter and asked him to make something out of it. Two weeks later, he came back to pick up the finished product and was handed a wallet.

The doctor said, "All those foreskins and that's all you could come up with?"

The leathercrafter replied, "Rub it and it turns into a suitcase."

Why are you so concerned about the shape of other people's genitalia? If it fights STD's in a country that is crippled by them then how is that not a good thing?

Why stop at the foreskin, then?

Hey, that could have been ME, had I been born in the U.S.
So, yes... I am in fact concerned with the brutal act of genital mutilation.

The vast majority of South Koreans will love this article. Since South Koreans are the only East Asians who perform male circumcision over 90%.

Did the studies make any attempt to determine why it helps prevent HIV? I know little about life in Africa but my first guess would be something related to hygiene. Even in the US that's the main medical reason.

In areas of the world where people are poorly educated about such things and have poor sanitation, I could see this being a good idea. In the US we have no such excuse. If we're going to take a scalpel to boys' privates because it could prevent disease, we may as well give everybody a mastectomy at puberty. Because you know, breast cancer is always a possibility.

I'm happy with my mutilated dick, in fact it would piss me off if i wasn't.

Circumcision only prevents disease and infection if you don't have a bar of soap to wash your uncutness with.

That's a very good point. Especially, it was for the sake of male hygine that circumsising penis was popular in South Korea. Now circumcision becomes the one of the official symbols of masculinatiy in South Korea. The other ones are military, Starcraft, and some Korean MMORPG.

I guess you have to use soap and wash it _really_ fast.

Could someone direct me to a study, or wiki entry, that discusses the medical benefit of circumcision? I've seen numerous stories that state there is a benefit, but none quote a source.

How has it been shown to decrease risk of contracting HIV? Have the studies/experiments/research been replicated?

I have a very strong suspicion this is a load of bull...

I have a strong feeling that the results of studies that 'prove' circumcision prevents HIV are skewed by some other undocumented variable.
A simple one that comes to mind is that the circumcised group is more likely to live in more developed areas, and have better access to condoms, and the education to use them.

on a less serious note, the article says health experts are worried "circumcision" may "undercut" hehe

Oh, Oober_Dave, thanks for the Penn and Teller link
