(Yahoo)   We should end Christmas' status as a federal holiday. That will completely halt the marketing and buying frenzy, of course   (news.yahoo.com) divider line

Screw that. I've made my Christmas into a fully-secular holiday that gives an affectionate nod to the many old-world religious origins of its traditions (Christian and otherwise), while focussing on the positive modern pursuits of generosity, fellowship, and heavy drinking.

I don't think we need to rename it, or move it, ditch the Jesus stuff, or anything. It's all just harmless tradition. I think it's possible to enjoy the holiday for what it means now, and accept that taking some time off around the solstice is a good idea for everyone.

No we shouldn't, subby.

YOU work on December 25. How's that sound.

I can only say one thing to all that.

Merry Christmas.

I'm not a fanatic atheist or a self-righteous secular humanist. I'm a practicing Christian.

I love when people warn me right at the beginning.

We need more federal holidays, not less, Kwanzaa, Christmas, Chanukah, Talk Like a Pirate Day, Xenu Day, I'll celebrate whatever you want if it gets me off work.

How about those of us that want the day off can take it, and those of us that want to work can work for double pay.

Amen brother. As soon as we can get rid of SOCAS, the better. The dirty libs need to remember that this is God's Country.

In short, suck it libs. Move to Red Russia if you dont' like it.

As a busboy, dishwasher, waiter, cook, bartender and bar owner I say....well, I don't know. I am conflicted. Business goes down in some respects during the holidays, but I own the lonely souls on Xmas day. Then again, they depress me, even though I am as secular a soul as you'll find.

Anyway, yeah, I see the point. Xmas has long been a cynical time for you and yours to consume. No wonder I have so many drunks show up. Pitiful or not, they're the smart ones.

I say this to Mary Jane Wilkie who wrote that moronic piece, go fark yourself. You work on Christmas the rest of us will enjoy our day off. I am nonchristian and quite enjoy celebrating the secular side of Christmas thanks. There are lots of us that aren't christians who celebrate the holiday.

Nope, we need the whole "Chrismahanukwanzakah" thing. Otherwise, nobody will post pictures of that "I'm a Scientologist" chick.

Christmas wasn't originally recogznied by the government. I am glad it became commercialized. I love it. My favorite holiday of the year.

From TFA:
It would restore the integrity of how Christians honor the birth of Jesus Christ.

Then they'd have to revert back past the fourth century, when the church decided to arbitrarily assign Dec. 25th as Christ's birthday in order to glom on to the much more popular pagan celebration of the winter solstice.

Holiday, schmoliday. I get over three weeks of vacation time each year, and rarely even finish two. So, I'll still be able to take my damn Yule through the Feast of the Slaughter of the Innocents anyway whether the Feds say to or not.

(As long as I keep the foo counters turning, everyone around me understands that they have a good thing going.... and my boss has decided against trying to reason with someone who calls Election Day a high holy day.)

I believe this issue has already come up in the Supreme Court. They ruled that Christmas has a very secular tradition, as well as religious.

I happen to agree with this. Take a vacation day if you want time off. Americans are lazy and stupid. If left to their own devices they would sit in front of the TV and eat junk food until they exploded. How is it fair that I am forced to pay your lazy a$$ for a day when you don't even work? Bah, humbug.
/just couldn't resist channeling Scrooge for a moment
//Merry Christmas!!

As someone who was REQUIRED to work the morning shift on Xmas day THREE YEARS RUNNING (and only getting time-and-a-half, no double-time at that workplace). And no, it wasn't an easy day to work. I was waitstaff in a retirement home, the day was just as hard as any other day... with the added bonus of having to be there at 6:30am and not leaving until 2:00pm. Kinda screws with Xmas morning present exchange with the family (was living with parents at the time, like half of you still ain't).

Having said that, anything to end the constant barrage of Xmas crap starting the day after Thanksgiving (and possibly earlier in some places) sounds nice to me. I"m already sick of Xmas songs on the radio.
