Entry 1/3: Wolfe Ranch in Arches National Park, UT

"John Wesley Wolfe settled here in the late 1800s with his oldest son Fred ... In 1906, John's daughter Flora Stanley, her husband, and their children moved to the ranch. Shocked at the primitive conditions, Flora convinced her father to build a new cabin with a wood floor - the cabin you see today."

I took this series last year, when I was in East Central Mississippi, helping with rebuilding the phone system after Katrina. I tried for months to stop and get shots of this abandoned, 100+ year-old home, and finally got my cahnce *on the last day there*, on my way home for the holidays.

This picture was taken in May of 2005 on the Brown's Field heirloom rice farm in Misaki, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. That's my former roommate Derek pondering the mud. The structure is a purpose-built guest house as the proprietors of the farm often have guests in the form of University students studying macrobiotics or, as in our case, studying the culture surrounding traditional rice farming. Amazing experience, I highly recommend it.

Here's one more from Prague. The 'hospoda' (pub) is definitely the second home of many Czechs, due to the fantastic and cheap beer in this country. I just read in National Geographic that they drink more beer here per capita than anywhere else in the world. This pub is called U Rudolfina and they serve up a great Pilsner Urquell.
