Huh? What the hell does the US Civil War have to do with anything?

Sloth_DC: They withdrew from the "military side" of NATO, right?

Pretty much. Thank De Gaulle for that. Their only real commitment to NATO is they remained tied by Article 5 (an attack on one is an attack on all), but they pretty much refuse to do any of the military integration that every other NATO member has done, save for some hardware stuff.

In keeping with the fark tradition concerning the French, let me offer this: before accepting a boatload of white flags from the French, make sure they include enough detergent to wash the shiat-stains out of them.

Got an email today from John Edwards -- yes, he does email me personally -- about how NATO should send a force to Darfur. Can't quite figure out how Darfur got into the North Atlantic.

Well, Afghanistan isn't exactly covered by the North Atlantic Treaty, either.

Not a bad piece, although I'd have to wonder what he's smokin' when talking about building a more 'trustful' relationship with Russia under the present circumstances.

They rejoined in 1993 and have special forces fighting alongside US troops in Afghanistan.

Right after the Soviets collapsed, eh?

And the same year that Jurassic Park was released in theaters!
Coincidence? Not likely!
