Let me tell you why this is..

The government allocates a certain amount of money to a program, and if that program does not spend that amount, it gets taken away next budget cycle.

"we gave you 4 million, you only spent 3.1.. you are cut by 900k"
wtf? we might need it next year though? we can use the 900k..
"Not only are we cutting your budget for next year, we're taking that 900k on our way out the door".

"Hey Amish! Suck it!"
"No."
"Please?"
"No."

But county officials question whether the effort is a waste of time and money. Amish oppose accepting government assistance.

heh. almost seems as if the welfare folks are afraid, don't it?

"The bureaucratric mindset is the one true constant in the universe."

Some people need welfare. The Amish do not, as their agrarian, community-based lifestyle includes looking after their own in times of need or misfortune.

In a way, this is not unlike what welfare SHOULD be. Sadly, WE really use it as a system to park poor people on, while guaranteeing that they will lack the resources to better themselves. The Amish probably do not think very highly of that.

Yeah, just ask Ohio about Rare Coin Funds and corrupt politicans. Being from Ohio, this sort of dumbassery is not much of a surprise...My hometown of Ashtabula is facing a lawsuit from the school board over $1.3 million in "misappropriated" funds for both a new high school and books to fill said high school.

If they're going to yank funding from the food stamp fund over the Amish, well, why not give it back to the school. Oh, yeah, shiat I'm making too much sense now...here in Ohio and America in general we don't do anything that makes sense or works.

Silly me.

/Ohio tag?

I live in Wayne County, Ohio--Holmes County (Amish Central) is the county to the south.

One thing about the Amish--they prefer not to depend on the government for ANYTHING. They don't warehouse their elderly in nursing homes. They don't apply for Social Security benefits. They help each other out.

The government HATES when you don't need them. Think about it. If someone has to depend on you for something, it's a lot easier to manipulate them.
