Hey, who is that guy?

2006-09-25 11:30:10 AM
Michael Shea, dismayed over the Bush, er um, victory in the 2004 election...

Amazing what you can learn about an author and his whacked-out POV just in the first sentence fragment.

It's not news, it's an opinion piece. He's not a journalist. This does not fall under the "OMGF LIBERAL MEDIA!!!" umbrella.

shiat, all he needed was a Total Fark account to find that out...

When was this shiat written? Sam Seder hasn't been cohost of the Majority Report since July. Janeane left because they were always fighting. And he hasn't even been host of the Majority Report since 9/18. He moved to the morning timeslot and change the show name to the Sam Seder Show. (I know, because I'm listening to it right now.)

A lot of people who voted for George Bush are frothing fundies. A lot of other people who voted for Bush are afraid of Osama bin Laden. Quite a few are folks who still think he's for small government. And a small minority are people who got those huge tax cuts. (As in, a couple orders of magnitude more than $300.) And then there are the folks who don't vote for Democrats because they don't bother educating themselves and just listen to the media.

This shouldn't be suprising to anyone.

But the election of 2004 wasn't a referendum. Bush got barely more than 50% of the vote. So that either means that those few districts went 100% for Kerry, or that *gasp* there are quite a few people in those "red" states that voted for a Democrat!

But that wouldn't be polarizing, so the false dichotomy supported by the Republicans and the beltway Dems. Thankfully, Howard Dean is putting money into those states, meaning that we're going to have a fighting chance of putting the brakes on this runaway train.

I live in a decidedly "blue" city in a "red" state that has a "blue" governor, but then I guess that's just the confusion that results from all us inbred simps somehow finding our dumbass way to the polls when we're not busy procreating with our siblings. Excuse me, I've got to go to church now, and it's my turn to bring the snakes.

I know exactly what you mean. I live in Lancaster, PA. The people in the surrounding counties are so conservative they don't even drive cars.

But a quick bumper sticker survey on my way to work shows that for every car with a conservative bumper sticker, there are eight that have liberal bumper stickers from 'People of Faith for Kerry' on the car owned by a theology teacher at the local seminary, to the "You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one" on the car owned by the psychologist on the corner. Even my scooter has a "Union of Concerned Scientists" sticker on it.

Shiat, we've even got a branch of the IWW in Lancaster. One of four in the entire freaking state. (Two in Philly and the other in Pittsburgh.)

One of the great things about Howard Dean, and the thing that pisses off a lot of beltway dems, is that he's actually sending staffers to these states.

2006-09-25 12:01:56 PM
Nowhere is it said that everyone in those states was a radical right winger. That is who this guy focused on, apparently. That was the purpose of his work. He decided to examine the views of the far right. There ARE a lot of people who think this country should be a "Christian nation" governed by Christian laws. I know some of them here in Indiana. They don't want to harass or hurt people of other religions, but they want the state to be based on Christianity.

On the other hand calling it "red state" does stereotype the members of those states as being these far right wingers he's interviewing. Even here in red state Indiana, we have a Democratic senator who, prior to that, was a 2 term governor (Evan Bayh). Granted Bayh is a special case. Hoosiers will elect him (and his dad, back in the day) to any office he wants.

They don't want to harass or hurt people of other religions, but they want the state to be based on Christianity.

However, they don't understand that doing so would be harassing and hurting other religions.

\or lack thereof

Christ. We DON'T need more divisiveness here. Please stop this. Everyone who disagrees isn't a moron, or even a moran. They have a different perspective. That is what makes is individuals.

Don't make the fatal mistake that only you have the truth. There are too many truths out there, and all you manage to do is show your own ignorance.

2006-09-25 12:09:11 PM
Action Replay Nick: Your headline is highly disingenuous, submitter.

You mean calling this guy a "journalist" is about as accurate as calling Bush a "good President"?

Yes. Most Red Staters ARE morans. Next!

Everyone who disagrees isn't a moron, or even a moran. They have a different perspective. That is what makes is individuals.

Yes, but not all perspectives are valid. If someone has a perspective on an issue and can back that up with evidence, it's valid. However, if someone says "Al Gore fuels his corporate jet with aborted fetuses," that's not a valid perspective, and shouldn't even be debated, no matter how much it makes that person an individual.

2006-09-25 12:18:35 PM
I asked 22 folks why they voted for Kerry and I concluded that every single one who did was promised a glass dragon for protection.

2006-09-25 12:22:17 PM
That's a sure-fire way to win support Dems. Dis the electorate as stupid because they voted for the other guy in the last election.

If Democrats continue to position themselves as intellectually superior to the electorate, they may never win another significant election.

Geez, even Bubba understood...you have to play down to the lowest common denominator to win....how do you guys think Bush has been so successful at getting elected?

Just sayin'

/hates both parties
//has to keep saying he hates both parties
///votes 3rd party
////additional votes for slashies

The Icelander
That analogy seems absurd. Voting for a person because you believe they will do YOU the most benefit according to your perspective seems a bit far from the psychotic perspective of seeing things that aren't there.

When a person says that they feel safer with GWB than Kerry, that is a perspective that can not be debated with reports or theories. It is something personal, and valid. If someone disagrees, that is also personal and valid. If someone says that either of them is a monster, than it is no longer valid. While it may SEEM that everyone who disagrees with you is some insane and illogical person who "just doesn't see the truth," in reality, their valid perspective makes YOU and YOUR perspective seem illogical and insane.

Are either group right or wrong? Not really. They are simply disagreeing on an opinion. There are huge repercussions to that choice, however, so it is the responsibility of all voting citizens to try and educate themselves in as much of the factual information out there while formulating their perspective. Hopefully, the truth will help them make good decisions.

To claim, however well intentioned, that their simplistic (in our opinion) take on the world and politics is somehow invalid makes us seem to lack the proper humility in accepting other humans as they are, instead of how we wish they were.

Turing_Machine

So you're saying we shouldn't debate politics?

2006-09-25 12:39:55 PM
Electing a president isn't like getting married. It's not a personal choice. This man could start WWIII, or he could bring about world peace. It's a public choice. If someone is going to make, in your opinion, the wrong decision, it's your job to try to convince them otherwise.

I agree that polarization isn't going to convince everyone, and neither is calling them idiots. But, really, to say that we shouldn't say "people who vote for Bush made a mistake" invalidates my views, which I've arrived at after great research and thought.

It also says that opinions people arrive at after no thought or research are just as valid as expert opinions, because they're personal and "simply disagreeing on an opinion."

So what?

The red states keep the MINORITY blue states in line.

Nothing keeps a bunch of half-baked liberals in place better than ordinary hardworking REAL people who don't go off willynilly with stupid ideas like gay marriage or making us pay for smokers and alchoholics and crackheads' medical bills.

What liberals don't realize is that soon ALL of the states will be red and there won't be anywhere left to hide then.

With comments like that, now I have a small glimpse of what Jews felt like the morning after Reichskristallnacht in 1938.

That or they are part of the delusional group that thinks they are in the top 1% of this country's earners with their $100,000 annual household income.

And of course, my defense of red states gets lumped in as "trolling," I'll never understand this place.

Liberals should be eventually marginalized and replaced with more pragmatic citizens, what can I say? Most of the United States happens to agree with me.

Like this?

Pussies don't like dicks, because pussies get farked by dicks. But dicks also fark assholes: assholes that just want to shiat on everything. Pussies may think they can deal with assholes their way. But the only thing that can fark an asshole is a dick, with some balls. The problem with dicks is: they fark too much or fark when it isn't appropriate - and it takes a pussy to show them that. But sometimes, pussies can be so full of shiat that they become assholes themselves... because pussies are an inch and half away from ass holes. I don't know much about this crazy, crazy world, but I do know this: If you don't let us fark this asshole, we're going to have our dicks and pussies all covered in shiat!

What a farking asshole. He is going to pick out the dumbasses from his interviews and use them to further what he believes to be true. It would be like me showing a documentary interviewing WTO protesters about why they voted for John Kerry.

Only the last two PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS, which were both historic landslide wins for the Republican party.

Yeah, 51/49 - MANDATE!

Compare that with the now 40% approval rating and the 66% who want us out of Iraq.

Yeah, total Conservative overwhelming majority, lol.

THANK YOU! i've been saying this for awhile. people wonder why so many people voted for Bush. if you had someone every day telling you that you're a moron, you'd be pissed and vote the other way just in spite. Bush saw this and took advantage of it.

AirForceVet: Al Gore receiving the majority vote in 2000 while Bush wins by electoral college, for one.

That's called tough luck. We do not decide in this country who gets to be President by popular vote.

I think pragmatic citizens want science and evolution taught in their schools, not somebody else's religion and "intelligent design."

Nonetheless, the majority of America is Christian and if anything have been reluctant to voice their support for alternative creation viewpoints to be taught in the school system. I think you're going to find that they would prefer both to be taught.

OK, we've left the realm of "Is he stupid or lying?" territory, and veered right off into "Does he live on the same planet as the rest of us?"-ville.

Hey skookum,

I just reviewed your profile. No term limits on Presidents. Wire tapping is all OK. Etc.

You're not a Christian nor an American.

You're a just a brown-shirt Nazi.

I was very moved by the experience of interacting with all of these people. Their concern for their community and the naton was at times quite humbling. But I'm also heading home experiencing a more funadamental feeling--fear. I'm afraid. I've become certain that there are many people in this country who want to tell the rest of us how to live. Who want this country to be governed exclusively by Christians who think that the 10 Commandents and the Bill of Rights are one and the same.

It is because of myopic, short sided crap like this, the Democrats keep losing. Red states are FAR more than 'religious inbreeds.' This person didn't go looking for the truth. He had an agenda and went out looking for evidence to support that agenda.
