SilentStrider: dumbass?

Uh--yeah. Since the actual phrase is supposed to be "the ends don't justify the means," I'd say the Dumbass tag is perfectly appropriate.

No, in the War on Terror, the means are increasingly being sold as justifying themselves.

"the ends don't justify the means,"

And so go down to your local police sation and get strip searched(raped) and anal/vaginal probed and fingerprinted and pics(unless you have a digital drivers licence) and leave a dna sample as you go out the door. Do this daily to prove your innocence.

/Have a nice day.

You too. And remember: This headline is a joke about the editor screwing up the phrase "the ends justify the means," not an apologetic for the Bush administration.

Or Merkel. Even this author concedes it's not clear. A German bungling of an American cliche seems just as likely to me as an editor's typo.

Typo? The editor's supposed to CATCH typos and mangled cliches.

Irony tag on vacation?? Terrorists obviously believe the ends justify the means.

nonsequitor: Terrorists obviously believe the ends justify the means.

Do they believe the means justify the ends?

Which is why it seems just as likely that he transcribed what Merkel actually said. The author of this piece is doing an awful lot of assuming and not a lot of fact-checking.
