Nope

Thank you, pull up to the next window.

2006-09-08 4:40:33 PM
Germany declared war on the U.S. on Dec. 11, 1941. Submitter, you are the dumbass.

2006-09-08 4:41:01 PM
Nice try, submitter. Germany & Italy declared war on the US on Dec 11, 1941, not the other way around.

2006-09-08 4:41:37 PM
Heh. 3 for 3.

2006-09-08 4:42:13 PM
Everyone point and laugh at the submitter.

2006-09-08 4:42:19 PM
*sigh* are there really people that stupid out there? Thats the kind of headline that makes me want to bite a handgun and blow my brains against the wall.

2006-09-08 4:42:54 PM
-1 for blatant idiocy

2006-09-08 4:42:59 PM
I was going to say the exact same thing others have already said.

Let's just leave it at submitter's stupid.

2006-09-08 4:44:05 PM
I only come in and call the smitty a dumbass, but I see that was already covered.

2006-09-08 4:44:29 PM
This should get a green just so all of fark can laugh at submitter too.

Came in to say the same thing.

2006-09-08 4:44:45 PM
Silly submitter thinks the US should have given up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor!

2006-09-08 4:44:53 PM
Nooooooo. Italy and Germany declared war on the U.S. as part of the Tripartite Agreement among the Axis powers, after the U.S. declared war on Japan.

2006-09-08 4:44:59 PM
Keep working on your history homework, there, submitter.

2006-09-08 4:45:52 PM
Submitter lives in a parallel universe. There, the U.S. declared war on Germany and Italy, unicorns run the federal government, women have three breasts, and Mount Rushmore displays the 3 Stooges and the Marx Brothers.

2006-09-08 4:46:04 PM
Though, and I can't believe I'm going to do this, the submitter is *technically* correct. Pearl Harbor was attacked and four days later the US did declare war on Germany and Italy. However, between the time of the Pearl Harbor attack and the US declaring war on Germany and Italy, Germany and Italy declared war on us.

2006-09-08 4:46:53 PM
mryoop789: Submitter lives in a parallel universe. There, the U.S. declared war on Germany and Italy, unicorns run the federal government, women have three breasts, and Mount Rushmore displays the 3 Stooges and the Marx Brothers.

Lucky bastard.

2006-09-08 4:49:59 PM
So that would mean the submitter is NOT AT ALL correct, Gecko, haha.

When there's a headline THIS stupid, it should really be required for the submitter to reveal themselves for public derision.

2006-09-08 4:51:02 PM
Why are you wasting my precious oxygen, submitter? If it isn't too late, can we stuff you back up your mother's vagina, strangle you in the womb, and pretend you were never born?

2006-09-08 4:51:23 PM
robsul82: So that would mean the submitter is NOT AT ALL correct, Gecko, haha.

No, actually, is wording is completely correct. We can assume things about his argument that are wrong, but they aren't in the headline.

2006-09-08 4:51:40 PM
chihuahua: Silly submitter thinks the US should have given up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor!

Leave Senator Blutarski out of this.

2006-09-08 4:52:19 PM
Out the submitter. I wanna know who's this stupid.

2006-09-08 4:54:14 PM
robsul82: So that would mean the submitter is NOT AT ALL correct, Gecko, haha

How do you figure?

Pearl Harbor attacked by Japanese-->US declares war on Japan-->Germany and Italy declare war on US-->US declares war on Germany and Italy (who had, until then, not attacked us)

So again, what was said was *technically* correct, if not disingenuous.

/devil's advocate

2006-09-08 4:56:42 PM
I can add nothing to this thread that hasn't already been said, other than to say that anyone who agrees with the submitter needs a good cockpunch.

2006-09-08 4:58:21 PM
jackrazz: other than to say that anyone who agrees with the submitter needs a good cockpunch.

You want to cockpunch the facts?

2006-09-08 4:58:26 PM
Teekno: No, actually, is wording is completely correct. We can assume things about his argument that are wrong, but they aren't in the headline.

Smitty here. Yes: The headline does not--repeat NOT--say that the US declared war on Germany IN RESPONSE TO Pearl Harbor. Just pointing out that the columnist's analogy made him look dumb because we did declare war on not one, but two nations that had never attacked us.

Furthermore, he goes on to speculate how silly it would have been if we had declared war on, say, Taiwan in response to Pearl Harbor. Since Taiwan was an ally of Japan, he's not helping himself.

Bottom line: He may have a valid argument about how the war in Iraq did not and/or should not have had anything to do with 9/11. But his ignorance of history lead him to select analogies that made him look rather stupid.

Ok, i like the way you think, and have voted for this link, but currently we are a huge minority it seems

2006-09-08 5:03:47 PM
Since Taiwan was an ally of Japan, he's not helping himself.

More an imperial possession than anything, but I see where you're going.

The CraneMeister: The headline does not--repeat NOT--say that the US declared war on Germany IN RESPONSE TO Pearl Harbor.

Maybe, but when you quote the columnist as saying, "We didn't respond to Pearl Harbor by declaring war...", then say the reality was that "We declared war on Germany and Italy four days after..." you are implying as hard as one can without actually coming out and saying it that war was declared on German and Italy in response to Pearl Harbor.

The CraneMeister: Furthermore, he goes on to speculate how silly it would have been if we had declared war on, say, Taiwan in response to Pearl Harbor. Since Taiwan was an ally of Japan, he's not helping himself.

Yeah, well what about Thailand?

2006-09-08 5:07:42 PM
You can have your own opinion but you CAN'T have your own FACTS!

2006-09-08 5:14:05 PM
Gecko Gingrich: you are implying as hard as one can without actually coming out and saying it that war was declared on German and Italy in response to Pearl Harbor

The progression from 9/11:

9/11-->war in Afghanistan-->a lot of blustering and threats from Saddam Hussein, but no actual attacks-->war in Iraq.

The progression from Pearl Harbor:

Pearl Harbor-->war declared on Japan-->Germany/Italy declare war on US, but don't actually attack-->war declared on Germany/Italy.

The columnist couldn't have picked an example that made him look dumber if he had tried. Germany and Italy (at least ostensibly) declared war on the US because FDR had just declared war on Japan. And he declared war on Japan because they had attacked us.

Could we not arguably say, then, that the US declared war on Germany and Italy as part of the response to Pearl Harbor? That's a bit of a stretch, I think. But it certainly leaves more holes in this columnist's analogies than in a pound of Swiss cheese.

2006-09-08 5:14:57 PM
jarrett: Yeah, well what about Thailand?

Ack! Sorry--brain fart.

2006-09-08 5:18:11 PM
The CraneMeister: The progression from 9/11:

Almost forgot:

What ties the two periods in history together is this:

1. Unprovoked attack on US.
2. US response to country originating the attack.
3. That country's allie(s) threaten to retaliate against the US.
4. US takes the battle to THEM as well.

Far more similarities than this nitwit thinks.

The CraneMeister: Could we not arguably say, then, that the US declared war on Germany and Italy as part of the response to Pearl Harbor? That's a bit of a stretch, I think. But it certainly leaves more holes in this columnist's analogies than in a pound of Swiss cheese.

a.) Germany was already engaged in war with our closest allies.
b.) Germany had already declared war on the US.
c.) The US was attacked by an ally of the German's.
d.) This entire argument is retarded.
e.) I don't think anyone is buying what you're trying to sell.

2006-09-08 5:22:21 PM
The CraneMeister: 9/11-->war in Afghanistan-->a lot of blustering and threats from Saddam Hussein, but no actual attacks-->war in Iraq.

You've forgotten one key part, Iraq had *zero* to do with the 9/11 attacks. Nada. Zip. Zilch. It'd be like if the US had declared war on Brazil* after the Pearl Harbor attacks, simply because the said that we deserved it and reveled in our pain a bit.

But it certainly leaves more holes in this columnist's analogies than in a pound of Swiss cheese.

A one pound block of swiss cheese has very few holes in it, a number of dents and divots, but no holes. Now a *slice* of swiss cheese. See, isn't it fun to pick apart analogies based on technicalities?

* I picked Brazil at random. If you can construe them as some ally of the Axis Powers then so be it. If so, I bow to your superior knowledge of WWII allies and enemies.

2006-09-08 5:25:31 PM
The CraneMeister: Could we not arguably say, then, that the US declared war on Germany and Italy as part of the response to Pearl Harbor?

We could, but we'd be really, really wrong. One of the enduring mysteries of WWII is why the european fascists were so willing to declare war on the U.S. after Pearl Harbor.

I'd dare say most lists of Hitler's Top 10 mistakes would include "Declaring War on the U.S.".

Why, there's even a 30 minute History Channel bit on specifically that question:

Great Blunders of WWII: Hitler's Declaration of War on the U.S.
.

The U.S. had a quite strong isolationist streak in it prior to WWII and it was far from a foregone conclusion that Pearl Harbor would in any way lead to a broader war in Europe.

As best we know Hitler was trying to get Japan to open another front against the Soviets. It didn't work.

2006-09-08 5:48:19 PM
I don't think it can be said too much: submitter is an idiot.

2006-09-08 6:46:04 PM
Homework, please.

a. Iraq has been at war with Israel and the West in general for years.
b. Iraq declared war on the US, had fought the US in the first Gulf War and tried to assassinate Bush pere.
c. The US was attacked by an ally of Iraq.
d. Speak for yourself.
e. I'm not selling anything except my contention that this columnist is a dumbass.

2006-09-08 6:49:56 PM
Gecko Gingrich: Iraq had *zero* to do with the 9/11 attacks. Nada. Zip. Zilch.

And Germany had *zero* to do with Pearl Harbor. You're only underscoring my point about how the two situations have a lot of parallels.

Must run. Enjoy your weekend, hopefully in a way that lets you REMEMBER your weekend come Monday.

2006-09-08 6:54:29 PM
There were already many acts of sabotage committed by German operatives in the U.S. Gecko can't be right because Germany had already begun 'terrorist' attacks.

2006-09-08 6:56:58 PM
CraneMeister's point is also invalid. Germany was allied to Japan, while al-Qaida was not allied with Iraq.

Well I certainly won't wonder who has already killed the most braincells.

Wow, this is pathetic, even for the low, low standards of The CraineMeister.

The CraneMeister: Germany/Italy declare war on US, but don't actually attack

The facts. So elusive.
